Mouse model of Schistosomiasis: infection with Schistosoma mansoni in CD-1 mice
Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease that affects almost 240 million worldwide. CD1 mice were infected with cercariae of S. mansoni, after which infection developed for 8 weeks. Tissues were processed
to immuno-histological techniques. It was performed H&E staining for overall analyses, Sirius Red for fibrosis and immunohistochemistry for inflammation biomarkers. The most infected organ was the
liver, fibrosis decreased with egg development and Galectin-3 (Gal3) and Interleukin 6 (IL-6) were expressed inside granulomasThis work was also supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (REF UID/BIM/04293/2013) and by the project NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000012 and by a scholarship to Carla Luís with the reference SAICT2016/FEDER/BIO4DIA/BTI under the supervision of Dr. Rúben Fernandes.N/
Who and how should participate in health care priority setting? Evidence from a Portuguese survey
This article provides highlights of the evolution of the health care rationing debate towards a more transparent and open approach involving public participation. Discretionary models that have dominated health sector decision-making are being questioned by different sectors of society. Using data from 442 college students, we explore public’s views on its involvement in health care rationing decisions. Findings suggest that although citizens wish to be consulted, they believe doctors should play the most important role on the rationing decisions. Nonetheless, the confidence in doctors is not independent of the criteria used to support their decisions.Priorities setting, Public involvement; Explicit rationing; Health-care.
Environmental tobacco smoke risk perception and smoking behavior in Portugal
This study analyzes public attitudes towards environmental tobacco smoking (ETS) risks. ETS legislation and smoking behaviors using recent data from Special Eurobarometer 272 that is a unique database on public perception of ETS. Some major conclusions are drawn: (1) both smokers and non-smokers are aware of health consequences from ETS, (2) moderate and heavy smokers tend to be less concerned with seriousness of the health consequences, (3) that the belief that ETS increases the risk of a serious disease decreases the probability of being smoker, (4)ETS beliefs do not affect the quitting decision, (5) those who smoke at home appear to be aware of health consequences of ETS, (6) ETS health risk beliefs is negatively associated with the number of cigarette consumed.
Two-Dimensional Bosonization from Variable Shifts in the Path Integral
A method to perform bosonization of a fermionic theory in (1+1) dimensions in
a path integral framework is developed. The method relies exclusively on the
path integral property of allowing variable shifts, and does not depend on the
explicit form of Greens functions. Two examples, the Schwinger model and the
massless Thirring model, are worked out.Comment: 4 page
Although the clinical
and epidemiological featu res ofthe disease are well caracterized, the cellular mechanisms involved
are still poorly understood.
Taking advantage ofall the information available on this subject, we tried to depict the several
mechanisms involved in the answer ofthe deep lung to the inhalation ofasbestos jibers.
ln the jirst part ofthis article we characterized the diferent kinds ofasbestos jibers as well as their
patterns oftransport and deposition in the deep lung.ln the second part we discribed the possible cellular mechanisms underlying the pathogeny of
pulmonary asbestosis. The e.fJect ofthe alveolar macrophages, polinuclear neuthrophils and the action
oftheir mediators is discribed.
Analysis of the bronco alveolar lavage jluid lynphocitary profile of pacients with pulmonary
asbestosis is also discribed, revealing significant increase in the CD4/CD8 ratio
From Metaphors to Mechanisms: Gender Sorting In(to) an Organizational Hierarchy
Numerous studies have examined patterns of gender inequality in organizational advancement, with some
showing results indicative of “glass ceilings,” where gender disparities are strong at the upper reaches of the
organization, while others suggest “sticky floors,” where the gender differences in advancement occur at the lower
levels of the organization. These studies, however, have been less clear on the mechanisms that produce these
descriptive patterns. With few exceptions, extant studies have focused on internal promotion practices and have not
addressed the extent to which these patterns might reflect gender differences in external recruitment and hiring into
the organization. We construct queues consisting of both external and internal candidates—the set of candidates
under consideration—for over 2,200 job openings during a 27-month period for a large retail bank. We find that
women are more likely than men to be hired, and that this pattern holds for jobs up and down the organizational
hierarchy. The applicant pools are themselves gendered, however, with women comprising a lower percentage of the
applicant pools for high-level jobs, but a greater proportion of the pools for lower-level jobs. Since women are more
likely than men to advance from each applicant pool to hire at all levels of the hierarchy, the apparent “glass ceiling”
observed among job incumbents is not due to gendered screening practices. Instead, the roots of gender inequality in
this firm lie in the initial sorting of applicants into queues
