Expansive actions on uniform spaces and surjunctive maps
We present a uniform version of a result of M. Gromov on the surjunctivity of
maps commuting with expansive group actions and discuss several applications.
We prove in particular that for any group and any field \K, the
space of -marked groups such that the group algebra \K[G] is

Multipass automata and group word problems
We introduce the notion of multipass automata as a generalization of pushdown
automata and study the classes of languages accepted by such machines. The
class of languages accepted by deterministic multipass automata is exactly the
Boolean closure of the class of deterministic context-free languages while the
class of languages accepted by nondeterministic multipass automata is exactly
the class of poly-context-free languages, that is, languages which are the
intersection of finitely many context-free languages. We illustrate the use of
these automata by studying groups whose word problems are in the above classes
Electric field dynamics and ion acceleration in the self-channeling of a superintense laser pulse
The dynamics of electric field generation and radial acceleration of ions by
a laser pulse of relativistic intensity propagating in an underdense plasma has
been investigated using an one-dimensional electrostatic, ponderomotive model
developed to interpret experimental measurements of electric fields [S. Kar et
al, New J. Phys. *9*, 402 (2007)]. Ions are spatially focused at the edge of
the charge-displacement channel, leading to hydrodynamical breaking, which in
turns causes the heating of electrons and an "echo" effect in the electric
field. The onset of complete electron depletion in the central region of the
channel leads to a smooth transition to a "Coulomb explosion" regime and a

Harmonic generation by atoms in circularly polarized two-color laser fields with coplanar polarizations and commensurate frequencies
The generation of harmonics by atoms or ions in a two-color, coplanar field
configuration with commensurate frequencies is investigated through both, an
analytical calculation based on the Lewenstein model and the numerical ab
initio solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation of a
two-dimensional model ion. Through the analytical model, selection rules for
the harmonic orders in this field configuration, a generalized cut-off for the
harmonic spectra, and an integral expression for the harmonic dipole strength
is provided. The numerical results are employed to test the predictions of the
analytical model. The scaling of the cut-off as a function of both, one of the
laser intensities and frequency ratio , as well as entire spectra for
different and laser intensities are presented and analyzed. The
theoretical cut-off is found to be an upper limit for the numerical results.
Other discrepancies between analytical model and numerical results are
clarified by taking into account the probabilities of the absorption processes

Von Neumann Regular Cellular Automata
For any group and any set , a cellular automaton (CA) is a
transformation of the configuration space defined via a finite memory set
and a local function. Let be the monoid of all CA over .
In this paper, we investigate a generalisation of the inverse of a CA from the
semigroup-theoretic perspective. An element is von
Neumann regular (or simply regular) if there exists
such that and , where is the composition of functions. Such an
element is called a generalised inverse of . The monoid
itself is regular if all its elements are regular. We
establish that is regular if and only if
or , and we characterise all regular elements in
when and are both finite. Furthermore, we study
regular linear CA when is a vector space over a field ; in
particular, we show that every regular linear CA is invertible when is
torsion-free elementary amenable (e.g. when ) and , and that every linear CA is regular when

Technical Note: Regularization performances with the error consistency method in the case of retrieved atmospheric profiles
International audienceThe retrieval of concentration vertical profiles of atmospheric constituents from spectroscopic measurements is often an ill-conditioned problem and regularization methods are frequently used to improve its stability. Recently a new method, that provides a good compromise between precision and vertical resolution, was proposed to determine analytically the value of the regularization parameter. This method is applied for the first time to real measurements with its implementation in the operational retrieval code of the satellite limb-emission measurements of the MIPAS instrument and its performances are quantitatively analyzed. The adopted regularization improves the stability of the retrieval providing smooth profiles without major degradation of the vertical resolution. In the analyzed measurements the retrieval procedure provides a vertical resolution that, in the troposphere and low stratosphere, is smaller than the vertical field of view of the instrument
Comparative antiviral activity of integrase inhibitors in human monocyte-derived macrophages and lymphocytes
The activity of raltegravir and 4 other integrase inhibitors (MK-2048, L870,810,
IN2, and IN5) was investigated in primary human macrophages, PBMC and
C8166-lymphocytic T cells, in order to determine their relative potency and
efficacy in different cellular systems of HIV infection. Raltegravir showed
better protective efficacy in all cell types; MK-2048, L870,810 and IN5 showed a
potent anti-HIV-1 activity in macrophages, while in lymphocytes only MK-2048 and
L870,810 showed an inhibitory effect comparable to raltegravir. IN2 was a poorly
effective anti-HIV-1 compound in all cellular systems. All effective integrase
inhibitors exhibited a potent antiviral activity against both X4 and R5 HIV-1
strains. In general, raltegravir, MK-2048, L870,810 and IN5 showed anti HIV
activity similar or slightly higher in macrophages compared to PBMC and C8166 T
cells: for MK-2048, the EC(50) was 0.4, 0.9, 11.5nM in macrophages, in PBMCs and
T cells, respectively; for L870,810, the EC(50) was 1.5, 14.3, and 10.6nM,
respectively; for IN5 the EC(50) was 0.5, 13.7, and 5.7nM, respectively
Dynamics of charge-displacement channeling in intense laser-plasma interactions
The dynamics of transient electric fields generated by the interaction of
high intensity laser pulses with underdense plasmas has been studied
experimentally with the proton projection imaging technique. The formation of a
charged channel, the propagation of its front edge and the late electric field
evolution have been characterised with high temporal and spatial resolution.
Particle-in-cell simulations and an electrostatic, ponderomotive model
reproduce the experimental features and trace them back to the ponderomotive

Charged State of a Spherical Plasma in Vacuum
The stationary state of a spherically symmetric plasma configuration is
investigated in the limit of immobile ions and weak collisions. Configurations
with small radii are positively charged as a significant fraction of the
electron population evaporates during the equilibration process, leaving behind
an electron distribution function with an energy cutoff. Such charged plasma
configurations are of interest for the study of Coulomb explosions and ion
acceleration from small clusters irradiated by ultraintense laser pulses and
for the investigation of ion bunches propagation in a plasma
