Effects of MAC Approaches on Non-Monotonic Saturation with COPE - A Simple Case Study
We construct a simple network model to provide insight into network design strategies. We show that the model can be used to address various approaches to network coding, MAC, and multi-packet reception so that their effects on network throughput can be evaluated. We consider several topology components which exhibit the same non-monotonic saturation behavior found within the Katti et. al. COPE experiments. We further show that fairness allocation by the MAC can seriously impact performance and cause this non-monotonic saturation. Using our model, we develop a MAC that provides monotonic saturation, higher saturation throughput gains and fairness among flows rather than nodes. The proposed model provides an estimate of the achievable gains for the cross-layer design of network coding, multi-packet reception, and MAC showing that super-additive throughput gains on the order of six times that of routing are possible.United States. Multi-Path TCP with Network Coding for Mobile Devices in Heterogeneous Networks
Existing mobile devices have the capability to use multiple network technologies simultaneously to help increase performance; but they rarely, if at all, effectively use these technologies in parallel. We first present empirical data to help understand the mobile environment when three heterogeneous networks are available to the mobile device (i.e., a WiFi network, WiMax network, and an Iridium satellite network). We then propose a reliable, multi-path protocol called Multi-Path TCP with Network Coding (MPTCP/NC) that utilizes each of these networks in parallel. An analytical model is developed and a mean-field approximation is derived that gives an estimate of the protocol's achievable throughput. Finally, a comparison between MPTCP and MPTCP/NC is presented using both the empirical data and mean-field approximation. Our results show that network coding can provide users in mobile environments a higher quality of service by enabling the use of multiple network technologies and the capability to overcome packet losses due to lossy, wireless network connections.United States. Congestion control for coded transport layers
The application of congestion control can have a significant detriment to the quality of service experienced at higher layers, especially under high packet loss rates. The effects of throughput loss due to the congestion control misinterpreting packet losses in poor channels is further compounded for applications such as HTTP and video leading to a significant decrease in the user's quality of service. Therefore, we consider the application of congestion control to transport layer packet streams that use error-correction coding in order to recover from packet losses. We introduce a modified AIMD approach, develop an approximate mathematic model suited to performance analysis, and present extensive experimental measurements in both the lab and the “wild” to evaluate performance. Our measurements highlight the potential for remarkable performance gains, in terms of throughput and upper layer quality of service, when using coded transports.United States. Dept. of Defense. Brief of Scholars of the History and Original Meaning of the Fourth Amendment as Amici Curiae in Support of Petitioner, Carpenter v. United States, No. 16-402 (U.S. Aug. 14, 2017)
Obtaining and examining cell site location records to find a person is a “search” in any normal sense of the word — a search of documents and a search for a person and her personal effects. It is therefore a “search” within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment in that it constitutes “examining,” “exploring,” “looking through,” “inquiring,” “seeking,” or “trying to find.” Nothing about the text of the Fourth Amendment, or the historical backdrop against which it was adopted, suggests that “search” should be construed more narrowly as, for example, intrusions upon subjectively manifested expectations of privacy that society is prepared to recognize as reasonable.Entrusting government agents with unfettered discretion to conduct searches using cell site location information undermines Fourth Amendment rights. The Amendment guarantees “[t]he right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches.” The Framers chose that language deliberately. It reflected the insecurity they suffered at the hands of “writs of assistance,” a form of general warrant that granted state agents broad discretion to search wherever they pleased. Such arbitrary power was “unreasonable” to the Framers, being “against the reason of the common law,” and it was intolerable because of its oppressive impact on “the people” as a whole. As emphasized in one of the seminal English cases that inspired the Amendment, this kind of general power to search was “totally subversive of the liberty of the subject.” James Otis’s famous speech denouncing a colonial writ of assistance similarly condemned those writs as “the worst instrument of arbitrary power,” placing “the liberty of every man in the hands of every petty officer.” Thus, although those who drafted and ratified the Fourth Amendment could not have anticipated cellphone technology, they would have recognized the dangers inherent in any state claim of unlimited authority to conduct searches for evidence of criminal activity. Cell site location information provides insight into where we go and what we do. Because this information is constantly generated and can be retrieved by the government long after the activities it memorializes have taken place, unfettered government access to cell site location information raises the specter of general searches and undermines the security of “the people.
Assessment of digital image correlation measurement errors: methodology and results
Optical full-field measurement methods such as Digital Image Correlation (DIC) are increasingly used in the field of experimental mechanics, but they still suffer from a lack of information about their metrological performances. To assess the performance of DIC techniques and give some practical rules for users, a collaborative work has been carried out by the Workgroup “Metrology” of the French CNRS research network 2519 “MCIMS (Mesures de Champs et Identification en Mécanique des Solides / Full-field measurement and identification in solid mechanics, http://www.ifma.fr/lami/gdr2519)”. A methodology is proposed to assess the metrological performances of the image processing algorithms that constitute their main component, the knowledge of which being required for a global assessment of the whole measurement system. The study is based on displacement error assessment from synthetic speckle images. Series of synthetic reference and deformed images with random patterns have been generated, assuming a sinusoidal displacement field with various frequencies and amplitudes. Displacements are evaluated by several DIC packages based on various formulations and used in the French community. Evaluated displacements are compared with the exact imposed values and errors are statistically analyzed. Results show general trends rather independent of the implementations but strongly correlated with the assumptions of the underlying algorithms. Various error regimes are identified, for which the dependence of the uncertainty with the parameters of the algorithms, such as subset size, gray level interpolation or shape functions, is discussed
The effectiveness of web-based interventions designed to decrease alcohol consumption – a systematic review
OBJECTIVE
To review the published literature on the effectiveness of web-based interventions designed to decrease consumption of alcohol and/or prevent alcohol abuse.
METHOD
Relevant articles published up to, and including, May 2006 were identified through electronic searches of Medline, PsycInfo, Embase, Cochrane Library, ASSIA, Web of Science and Science Direct. Reference lists of all articles identified for inclusion were checked for articles of relevance. An article was included if its stated or implied purpose was to evaluate a web-based intervention designed to decrease consumption of alcohol and/or to prevent alcohol abuse. Studies were reliably selected and quality-assessed, and data were independently extracted and interpreted by two authors.
RESULTS
Initial searches identified 191 articles of which 10 were eligible for inclusion. Of these, five provided a process evaluation only, with the remaining five providing some pre-to post-intervention measure of effectiveness. In general the percentage quality criteria met was relatively low and only one of the 10 articles selected was a randomized control trial.
CONCLUSION
The current review provides inconsistent evidence on the effectiveness of eIectronic screening and brief intervention (eSBI) for alcohol use. Process research suggests that web-based interventions are generally well received. However further controlled trials are needed to fully investigate their efficacy, to determine which elements are keys to outcome and to understand if different elements are required in order to engage low- and high-risk drinkers
Integrity and Its Counterfeits: Implications for Economy, Business and Management
While the concept of integrity has long been explored by great philosophers and thinkers, its application in modern and postmodern business and economic contexts has been underdeveloped. Little have been done to address the vagueness and paradoxicality of integrity and its shadow reality of counterfeits. The thematic collection, which this paper complements, entitled ‘Integrity and Its Counterfeits: Implications for Economy, Business and Management’, makes a contribution towards filling the gap between the abstract concept of integrity and its application into business and economy, with a particular attention on the ambiguous, equivocal and diverse meanings of the concept, the complex and dynamic practicality of integrity, and the grey and dark areas of business out of integrity. This article introduces the background of the research theme and provides exemplary debates and emerging avenues of discussion on this topic
Abiotic formation of O2 and O3 in high-CO2 terrestrial atmospheres
Previous research has indicated that high amounts of ozone (O3) and oxygen
(O2) may be produced abiotically in atmospheres with high concentrations of
CO2. The abiotic production of these two gases, which are also characteristic
of photosynthetic life processes, could pose a potential "false-positive" for
remote-sensing detection of life on planets around other stars.We show here
that such false positives are unlikely on any planet that possesses abundant
liquid water, as rainout of oxidized species onto a reduced planetary surface
should ensure that atmospheric H2 concentrations remain relatively high, and
that O2 and O3 remain low. Our aim is to determine the amount of O3 and O2
formed in a high CO2 atmosphere for a habitable planet without life. We use a
photochemical model that considers hydrogen (H2) escape and a detailed hydrogen
balance to calculate the O2 and O3 formed on planets with 0.2 of CO2 around the
Sun, and 0.02, 0.2 and 2 bars of CO2 around a young Sun-like star with higher
UV radiation. The concentrations obtained by the photochemical model were used
as input in a radiative transfer model that calculated the spectra of the
modeled planets. The O3 and O2 concentrations in the simulated planets are
extremely small, and unlikely to produce a detectable signature in the spectra
of those planets. We conclude that with a balanced hydrogen budget, and for
planets with an active hydrological cycle, abiotic formation of O2 and O3 is
unlikely to create a possible false positive for life detection in either the

Social identity, social networks and recovery capital in emerging adulthood: a pilot study
Background
It has been argued that recovery from substance dependence relies on a change in identity, with past research focused on ‘personal identity’. This study assessed support for a social identity model of recovery in emerging adults through examining associations between social identity, social networks, recovery capital, and quality of life.
Methods
Twenty participants aged 18–21 in residential treatment for substance misuse were recruited from four specialist youth drug treatment services - three detoxification facilities and one psychosocial rehabilitation facility in Victoria, Australia. Participants completed a detailed social network interview exploring the substance use of groups in their social networks and measures of quality of life, recovery capital, and social identity.
Results
Lower group substance use was associated with higher recovery capital, stronger identification with non-using groups, and greater importance of non-using groups in the social network. Additionally, greater identification with and importance of non-using groups were associated with better environmental quality of life, whereas greater importance conferred on using groups was associated with reduced environmental quality of life.
Conclusions
Support was found for the role of social identity processes in reported recovery capital and quality of life. Future research in larger, longitudinal samples is required to improve understanding of social identity processes during treatment and early recovery and its relationship to recovery stability.
