Do gaze cues in complex scenes capture and direct the attention of high functioning adolescents with ASD? evidence from eye-tracking
Visual fixation patterns whilst viewing complex photographic scenes containing one person were studied in 24 high-functioning adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and 24 matched typically developing adolescents. Over two different scene presentation durations both groups spent a large, strikingly similar proportion of their viewing time fixating the person’s face. However, time-course analyses revealed differences between groups in priorities of attention to the region of the face containing the eyes. It was also noted that although individuals with ASD were rapidly cued by the gaze direction of the person in the scene, this was not followed by an immediate increase in total fixation duration at the location of gaze, which was the case for typically developing individuals
The eye gaze direction of an observed person can bias perception, memory, and attention in adolescents with and without autism spectrum disorder
The reported experiments aimed to investigate whether a person and his or her gaze direction presented in the context of a naturalistic scene cause perception, memory, and attention to be biased in typically developing adolescents and high-functioning adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A novel computerized image manipulation program presented a series of photographic scenes, each containing a person. The program enabled participants to laterally maneuver the scenes behind a static window, the borders of which partially occluded the scenes. The gaze direction of the person in the scenes spontaneously cued attention of both groups in the direction of gaze, affecting judgments of preference (Experiment 1a) and causing memory biases (Experiment 1b). Experiment 2 showed that the gaze direction of a person cues visual search accurately to the exact location of gaze in both groups. These findings suggest that biases in preference, memory, and attention are caused by another person's gaze direction when viewed in a complex scene in adolescents with and without ASD (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. A human factors methodology for real-time support applications
A general approach to the human factors (HF) analysis of new or existing projects at NASA/Goddard is delineated. Because the methodology evolved from HF evaluations of the Mission Planning Terminal (MPT) and the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite Mission Operations Room (ERBS MOR), it is directed specifically to the HF analysis of real-time support applications. Major topics included for discussion are the process of establishing a working relationship between the Human Factors Group (HFG) and the project, orientation of HF analysts to the project, human factors analysis and review, and coordination with major cycles of system development. Sub-topics include specific areas for analysis and appropriate HF tools. Management support functions are outlined. References provide a guide to sources of further information
Nonlinear metrology with a quantum interface
We describe nonlinear quantum atom-light interfaces and nonlinear quantum
metrology in the collective continuous variable formalism. We develop a
nonlinear effective Hamiltonian in terms of spin and polarization collective
variables and show that model Hamiltonians of interest for nonlinear quantum
metrology can be produced in Rb ensembles. With these Hamiltonians,
metrologically relevant atomic properties, e.g. the collective spin, can be
measured better than the "Heisenberg limit" . In contrast to other
proposed nonlinear metrology systems, the atom-light interface allows both
linear and non-linear estimation of the same atomic quantities.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

Historically, sales of exotic meats have been limited only by supply. As supply has increased in recent years, national
and international exotic game markets have grown rapidly. In the United States, growth
has occurred primarily in the restaurant section, although over-the-counter sales
have also increased.
The Alaskan reindeer industry is exploring the potential of expanding its meat sales as well as antler sales. Meat production increased from 320,000 pounds in 1987 to 432,000 pounds in 1988. This production increase is reflected in a 27
percent increase in dollar value (Alaska Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, 1989). Under current management procedures, potential meat production has been estimated at 500,000 pounds (Pearson and Lewis, 1988). Any future market expansion
is likely to occur in urban Alaska and in areas outside the state (Jones, 1988)
Quantum Algorithm to Solve Satisfiability Problems
A new quantum algorithm is proposed to solve Satisfiability(SAT) problems by
taking advantage of non-unitary transformation in ground state quantum
computer. The energy gap scale of the ground state quantum computer is analyzed
for 3-bit Exact Cover problems. The time cost of this algorithm on general SAT

Perceived characteristics of the environment associated with active travel: development and testing of a new scale
Background
Environmental characteristics may be associated with patterns of physical activity. However, the development of instruments to measure perceived characteristics of the local environment is still at a comparatively early stage, and published instruments are not necessarily suitable for application in all settings. We therefore developed and established the test-retest reliability of a new scale for use in a study of the correlates of active travel and overall physical activity in deprived urban neighbourhoods in Glasgow, Scotland.
Methods
We developed and piloted a 14-item scale based on seven constructs identified from the literature (aesthetics, green space, access to amenities, convenience of routes, traffic, road safety and personal safety). We administered the scale to all participants in a random postal survey (n = 1322) and readministered the scale to a subset of original respondents (n = 125) six months later. We used principal components analysis and Varimax rotation to identify three principal components (factors) and derived summary scores for subscales based on these factors. We examined the internal consistency of these subscales using Cronbach's alpha and examined the test-retest reliability of the individual items, the subscale summary scores and an overall summary neighbourhood score using a combination of correlation coefficients and Cohen's kappa with and without weighting.
Results
Public transport and proximity to shops were the items most likely to be rated positively, whereas traffic volume, traffic noise and road safety for cyclists were most likely to be rated negatively. Three principal components – 'safe and pleasant surroundings', 'low traffic' and 'convenience for walking' – together explained 45% of the total variance. The test-retest reliability of individual items was comparable with that of items in other published scales (intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) 0.34–0.70; weighted Cohen's kappa 0.24–0.59). The overall summary neighbourhood score had acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.72) and test-retest reliability (ICC 0.73).
Conclusion
This new scale contributes to the development of a growing set of tools for investigating the role of perceived environmental characteristics in explaining or mediating patterns of active travel and physical activity

Cross Calibration of Telescope Optical Throughput Efficiencies using Reconstructed Shower Energies for the Cherenkov Telescope Array
For reliable event reconstruction of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes
(IACTs), calibration of the optical throughput efficiency is required. Within
current facilities, this is achieved through the use of ring shaped images
generated by muons. Here, a complementary approach is explored, achieving cross
calibration of elements of IACT arrays through pairwise comparisons between
telescopes, focussing on its applicability to the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope
Array (CTA). Intercalibration of telescopes of a particular type using
eventwise comparisons of shower image amplitudes has previously been
demonstrated to recover the relative telescope optical responses. A method
utilising the reconstructed energy as an alternative to image amplitude is
presented, enabling cross calibration between telescopes of varying types
within an IACT array. Monte Carlo studies for two plausible CTA layouts have
shown that this calibration procedure recovers the relative telescope response
