An Overview of Health Law Research and an Annotated Bibliography
This analysis and the following bibliography are designed to meet the needs of researchers attempting to locate information in the field of health law. The analysis is written from the perspective of law librarians, but the same information retrieval problems apply to health administrators, hospital and medical counsel, and academic lawyers interested in health law and administration
Production of Soybean Varieties Under Saturated Soil Culture on Tidal Swamps
Saturated soil culture (SSC) is a cultivation technology that gives continuous irrigation and maintains water depth constantly and makes soil layer in saturated condition. By keeping the water-table constantly, soybean will be avoided from negative effect of inundation on soybean growth because soybean will acclimatize and improve its growth. The objective of the research was to study the response of soybean varieties under saturated soil culture on tidal swamps. The research was conducted at Banyu Urip of Tanjung Lago Sub District, Banyuasin District, South Sumatera Province, Indonesia from April to August 2009. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. The main plot was water depth in the furrow consisted of without watering, 10, 20, 30, 40 cm under soil surface (uss). The subplot was soybean variety consisted of Tanggamus, Slamet, Willis, and Anjasmoro. The result showed that the interaction between varieties and water depth significantly affected growth and seed production, except pod numbers/plant. The values of all variables were higher under SSC compared to those cultivated without watering (control), but varieties responded to SSC differently. The highest seed production was obtained from Tanggamus with 40 cm uss, i.e. 4.83 ton/ha but it was not significantly different from those at water depth 20 (4.63 ton/ha) and 30 cm uss (4.71 ton/ha). However, technically and economically, 20 cm uss was the most appropriate water depth for soybean production on tidal swamps
Interference Effects Due to Commensurate Electron Trajectories and Topological Crossovers in (TMTSF)2ClO4
We report angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements on (TMTSF)2ClO4 that
provide strong support for a new macroscopic quantum phenomenon, the
interference commensurate (IC) effect, in quasi-one dimensional metals. In
addition to observing rich magnetoresistance oscillations, and fitting them
with one-electron calculations, we observe a clear demarcation of
field-dependent behavior at local resistance minima and maxima (versus field
angle). Anticipated by a theoretical treatment of the IC effect in terms of
Bragg reflections in the extended Brillouin zone, this behavior results from
1D-2D topological crossovers of electron wave functions as a function of field
orientation.Comment: 14 page
Mortality in patients with successful initial response to highly active antiretroviral therapy is still higher than in non-HIV-infected individuals.
Mortality in HIV-infected patients has decreased dramatically since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). We analyzed progression to death in a population of 3678 antiretroviral treatment-naive patients from the ATHENA national observational cohort from 24 weeks after the start of HAART. Mortality was compared with that in the general population in the Netherlands matched by age and gender. Only log-transformed CD4 cell count (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.50, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.40 to 0.61 per unit increase) and plasma viral load (HR = 0.30, 95% CI: 0.15 to 0.60, HIV RNA level or = 100,000 copies/mL) measured at 24 weeks and infection via intravenous drug use (IDU) (HR = 0.16, 95% CI: 0.10 to 0.26, non-IDU vs. IDU) were significantly associated with progression to death. For non-IDU patients with 600 x 10 CD4 cells/L and an HIV RNA level <100,000 copies/mL at 24 weeks, mortality was predicted to be 5.3 (95% CI: 3.5 to 8.4) and 10.4 (95% CI: 6.4 to 17.4) times higher than in the general population for 25-year-old men and women, respectively, and 1.15 (95% CI: 1.08 to 1.25) and 1.29 (95% CI: 1.16 to 1.50) times higher for 65-year-old men and women, respectively. Hence, mortality in HIV-infected patients with a good initial response to HAART is still higher than in the general population
Fullerene-based Biocomponents : New Concepts For Functionalising Membranes
Lipophilic hexakisadducts of fullerene C60 form unprecedented rod-like nanoaggregates in phospholipid-membrane bilayers, resulting in modification of the micromechanic properties and stabilisation of the membrane. Lipofullerenes with amphiphilic side chains enable additionally derivatisation and molecular recognition at the membrane surface. The amphiphilic spacer acts as a transmembrane anchor and provides the terminal functionality outside of the membrane. New systems derived from parent compound 3 carry two functional groups each and can be easily modified due to the modular synthesis. Terminal functionalities to be investigated include D(+)-biotin and IDA (iminodiacetic acid) ligands, as used in nickel-histidine tags. Modification of the lipophilic region, for instance with unsaturated addends is also possible. These addends should allow polymerisation inside the membrane and potentially lead to a tremendous increase of the membrane rigidity. Furthermore, mono- and bilayer-forming fullerene derivatives without the membrane-forming support of lecithins are investigated and exhibit interesting features
Field-induced confinement in (TMTSF)2ClO4 under accurately aligned magnetic fields
We present transport measurements along the least conducting c direction of
the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4, performed under an accurately aligned
magnetic field in the low temperature regime. The experimental results reveal a
two-dimensional confinement of the carriers in the (a,b) planes which is
governed by the magnetic field component along the b' direction. This 2-D
confinement is accompanied by a metal-insulator transition for the c axis
resistivity. These data are supported by a quantum mechanical calculation of
the transverse transport taking into account in self consistent treatment the
effect of the field on the interplane Green function and on the intraplane
scattering time
