Nighttime sky/cloud image segmentation
Imaging the atmosphere using ground-based sky cameras is a popular approach
to study various atmospheric phenomena. However, it usually focuses on the
daytime. Nighttime sky/cloud images are darker and noisier, and thus harder to
analyze. An accurate segmentation of sky/cloud images is already challenging
because of the clouds' non-rigid structure and size, and the lower and less
stable illumination of the night sky increases the difficulty. Nonetheless,
nighttime cloud imaging is essential in certain applications, such as
continuous weather analysis and satellite communication.
In this paper, we propose a superpixel-based method to segment nighttime
sky/cloud images. We also release the first nighttime sky/cloud image
segmentation database to the research community. The experimental results show
the efficacy of our proposed algorithm for nighttime images.Comment: Accepted in Proc. IEEE International Conference on Image Processing

Youth employment and unemployment in India
Increase in the share of youth population due to demographic `dividend' or the `youth bulge' seems to be one of the sources of future economic growth in India. Although with increase in school and college enrolment rates, the proportion of youth in the labour force has been declining, their high proportions in the labour force indicate that the problem of youth unemployment and underemployment would remain a serious policy issue for many more years to come in India. In this context, this paper examines the employment and unemployment situation of the youth in India during the last two-and-half decades viz., 1983 to 2007-08. It analyses the trends in labour force and workforce participation rates, unemployment, joblessness, working poor, growth and employment elasticities etc. The paper also offers policy recommendations for increasing productive employment and reduction in unemployment for the youth. The poor employability of the workforce would hamper the advantages due to demographic dividend if measures are not taken to improve the educational attainment and skill development of the youth.Youth Employment, unemployment, skill development, joblessness, demographic dividend, literacy, school education, vocational training
Dark Energy and the Statistical Study of the Observed Image Separations of the Multiply Imaged Systems in the CLASS Statistical Sample
The present day observations favour a universe which is flat, accelerated and
composed of matter (baryonic + dark) and of a negative
pressure component, usually referred to as dark energy or quintessence. The
Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS), the largest radio-selected galactic mass
scale gravitational lens search project to date, has resulted in the largest
sample suitable for statistical analyses. In the work presented here, we
exploit observed image separations of the multiply imaged lensed radio sources
in the sample. We use two different tests: (1) image separation distribution
function of the lensed radio sources and (2)
{\dtheta}_{\mathrm{pred}} vs {\dtheta}_{\mathrm{obs}} as observational
tools to constrain the cosmological parameters and \Om. The results are
in concordance with the bounds imposed by other cosmological tests.Comment: 20 pages latex; Modified " Results and Discussion " section, new

Four Zero Texture Fermion Mass Matrices in SO(10) GUT
We attempt the integration of the phenomenologically successful four zero
texture of fermion mass matrices with the renormalizable SO(10) GUT. The
resulting scenario is found to be highly predictive. Firstly, we examine the
phenomenological implications of a class of the lepton mass matrices with
parallel texture structures and obtain interesting constraints on the
parameters of the charged lepton and the neutrino mass matrices. We combine
these phenomenological constraints with the constraints obtained from SO(10)
GUT to reduce the number of the free parameters and to further constrain the
allowed ranges of the free parameters. The solar/atmospheric mixing angles
obtained in this analysis are in fairly good agreement with the data.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
CP-odd Weak Basis Invariants for Neutrino Mass Matrices with a Texture Zero and a Vanishing Minor
We construct the -odd weak basis invariants in the flavor basis for all
the phenomenologically viable neutrino mass matrices with a texture zero and a
vanishing minor and, also, find the necessary and sufficient conditions for
invariance . We examine the interrelationships between different -odd
weak basis invariants for these texture structures and investigate their
implications for Dirac- and Majorana-type violation.Comment: To appear in Journal of Physics
Analytic Coulomb matrix elements in the lowest Landau level in disk geometry
Using Darling's theorem on products of generalized hypergeometric series an
analytic expression is obtained for the Coulomb matrix elements in the lowest
Landau level in the representation of angular momentum. The result is important
in the studies of Fractional Quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in disk geometry.
Matrix elements are expressed as simple finite sums of positive terms,
eliminating the need to approximate these quantities with slowly-convergent
series. As a by-product, an analytic representation for certain integals of
products of Laguerre polynomials is obtained.Comment: Accepted to J. Math. Phys.; 3 pages revtex, no figure
Delicate f(R) gravity models with disappearing cosmological constant and observational constraints on the model parameters
We study the theory of gravity using metric approach. In particular we
investigate the recently proposed model by Hu-Sawicki, Appleby Battye and
Starobinsky. In this model, the cosmological constant is zero in flat space
time. The model passes both the Solar system and the laboratory tests. But the
model parameters need to be fine tuned to avoid the finite time singularity
recently pointed in the literature. We check the concordance of this model with
the and baryon acoustic oscillation data. We find that the model
resembles the CDM at high redshift. However, for some parameter values
there are variations in the expansion history of the universe at low redshift.Comment: 16 pages and 9 figures, typos corrected, few references and minor
