    Data-Discriminants of Likelihood Equations

Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is a fundamental computational problem in statistics. The problem is to maximize the likelihood function with respect to given data on a statistical model. An algebraic approach to this problem is to solve a very structured parameterized polynomial system called likelihood equations. For general choices of data, the number of complex solutions to the likelihood equations is finite and called the ML-degree of the model. The only solutions to the likelihood equations that are statistically meaningful are the real/positive solutions. However, the number of real/positive solutions is not characterized by the ML-degree. We use discriminants to classify data according to the number of real/positive solutions of the likelihood equations. We call these discriminants data-discriminants (DD). We develop a probabilistic algorithm for computing DDs. Experimental results show that, for the benchmarks we have tried, the probabilistic algorithm is more efficient than the standard elimination algorithm. Based on the computational results, we discuss the real root classification problem for the 3 by 3 symmetric matrix~model.Comment: 2 table

User's guide to image processing applications of the NOAA satellite HRPT/AVHRR data. Part 1: Introduction to the satellite system and its applications. Part 2: Processing and analysis of AVHRR imagery

The use of NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radar/High Resolution Picture Transmission (AVHRR/HRPT) imagery for earth resource applications is provided for the applications scientist for use within the various Earth science, resource, and agricultural disciplines. A guide to processing NOAA AVHRR data using the hardware and software systems integrated for this NASA project is provided. The processing steps from raw data on computer compatible tapes (1B data format) through usable qualitative and quantitative products for applications are given. The manual is divided into two parts. The first section describes the NOAA satellite system, its sensors, and the theoretical basis for using these data for environmental applications. Part 2 is a hands-on description of how to use a specific image processing system, the International Imaging Systems, Inc. (I2S) Model 75 Array Processor and S575 software, to process these data

Evaluation of River Health and Water Quantity at the Anseong River, Changwon City, Korea

The paper aims to analyse the degree of river naturality according to the river morphology and the flora at raparian regions on the Anseong River during four seasons. Number of flexion was one at upper and low regions. That of middle region was absent. Bed materials were boulders and gravel in upper region and sand, silt, and clay in middle and low regions. Material of river shore at low channel width was the state of nature without protecting materials at upper region, but that was concreted impervious. Those of middle and upper regions were many artificial levees. The flora on the Anseong River was a total of 61 taxa, including 25 families, 54 species, and 7 varieties. The oxygen demand parameters COD, and BOD were within unacceptable levels at middle and low regions. Many cement blocks were creating instead river grasslands by the Direct stream Rivers Project and wide road construction. This artificial action reduced the waters natural filtration action

Electrical spin injection and detection in an InAs quantum well

We demonstrate fully electrical detection of spin injection in InAs quantum wells. A spin polarized current is injected from a NiFe thin film to a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) made of InAs based epitaxial multi-layers. Injected spins accumulate and diffuse out in the 2DEG, and the spins are electrically detected by a neighboring NiFe electrode. The observed spin diffusion length is 1.8 um at 20 K. The injected spin polarization across the NiFe/InAs interface is 1.9% at 20 K and remains at 1.4% even at room temperature. Our experimental results will contribute significantly to the realization of a practical spin field effect transistor

Complements of hypersurfaces, variation maps and minimal models of arrangements

We prove the minimality of the CW-complex structure for complements of hyperplane arrangements in Cn\mathbb C^n by using the theory of Lefschetz pencils and results on the variation maps within a pencil of hyperplanes. This also provides a method to compute the Betti numbers of complements of arrangements via global polar invariants

Online gaming addiction: the role of sensation seeking, self-control, neuroticism, aggression, state anxiety and trait anxiety

Research into online gaming has steadily increased over the last decade, although relatively little research has examined the relationship between online gaming addiction and personality factors. This study examined the relationship between a number of personality traits (sensation seeking, self-control, aggression, neuroticism, state anxiety, and trait anxiety) and online gaming addiction. Data were collected over a 1-month period using an opportunity sample of 123 university students at an East Midlands university in the United Kingdom. Gamers completed all the online questionnaires. Results of a multiple linear regression indicated that five traits (neuroticism, sensation seeking, trait anxiety, state anxiety, and aggression) displayed significant associations with online gaming addiction. The study suggests that certain personality traits may be important in the acquisition, development, and maintenance of online gaming addiction, although further research is needed to replicate the findings of the present study

Inverse Medea as a Novel Gene Drive System for Local Population Replacement: A Theoretical Analysis

    Get PDF
One strategy to control mosquito-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever, on a regional scale is to use gene drive systems to spread disease-refractory genes into wild mosquito populations. The development of a synthetic Medea element that has been shown to drive population replacement in laboratory Drosophila populations has provided encouragement for this strategy but has also been greeted with caution over the concern that transgenes may spread into countries without their consent. Here, we propose a novel gene drive system, inverse Medea, which is strong enough to bring about local population replacement but is unable to establish itself beyond an isolated release site. The system consists of 2 genetic components—a zygotic toxin and maternal antidote—which render heterozygous offspring of wild-type mothers unviable. Through population genetic analysis, we show that inverse Medea will only spread when it represents a majority of the alleles in a population. The element is best located on an autosome and will spread to fixation provided any associated fitness costs are dominant and to very high frequency otherwise. We suggest molecular tools that could be used to build the inverse Medea system and discuss its utility for a confined release of transgenic mosquitoes

River Morphology and Riparian Vegetation at the Tributary of Seongdong, Korea

The purpose of this study is to investigate river morphology, riparian vegetation, and water quality on the tributary of Seongdong River in Korea during four seasons. There were not significant differences for river structure according to the river morphology and river naturality according to the environment of river at three regions (upper, middle and low areas). The portion of BOD and COD in the river increased exponentially along the upper-down gradient. The surveyed region was a total of 57 taxa, including 23 families, 50pecies, and 7varieties. Naturalized plants were 18species
