    Literacy in India

    Literacy refers to an individual’s ability to communicate through reading and writing. The literacy rate for any population measures the fraction of the population, above a certain cut-off age, that is literate. Based on the most recent statistics compiled by UNESCO, more than one in three Indians above the age of 15 years is unable to read and write. Further, the roughly 268 million adult illiterates in India constitute one-third of the global population of illiterates. International comparisons show that the Indian literacy rate is well below those for other populous countries like China and also below those for developing countries in general

    Evaluating Greek equity funds using data envelopment analysis

    This study assesses the relative performance of Greek equity funds employing a non-parametric method, specifically Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Using an original sample of cost and operational attributes we explore the e¤ect of each variable on funds' operational efficiency for an oligopolistic and bank-dominated fund industry. Our results have significant implications for the investors' fund selection process since we are able to identify potential sources of inefficiencies for the funds. The most striking result is that the percentage of assets under management affects performance negatively, a conclusion which may be related to the structure of the domestic stock market. Furthermore, we provide evidence against the notion of funds' mean-variance efficiency

    The focus of research on the issue of progressive tax on automobiles in Bali. This policy aims to increase local revenue comes from vehicle taxes, in addition to reducing traffic congestion in cities such as Denpasar and Badung. The research objective to analyze the effect of progressive tax changes on consumer behavior, vehicle ownership (tax base), tax compliance and revenue estimates of Bali . This study used primary data sourced from taxpayers grouped respondents over the ownership of two units and more than two units of four-wheeled vehicles. The sample of respondents was taken as many as 100 people, using probability proportional to size sampling is based on vehicle ownership dispersed population in the district / city in Bali. Data were analyzed using pathway diagrams and structural equation modeling. The results show that changes in marginal tax burden has not been able to lower consumer behavior and the willingness of taxpayers in the ownership of the vehicle (the tax base), but the taxpayers still abiding in the payment of taxes on motor vehicles. Then based on estimates of the taxpayer, although there are changes in the progressive income tax expense increased in the region remains relatively small amount

    Role of the Placental Vitamin D Receptor in Modulating Feto-Placental Growth in Fetal Growth Restriction and Preeclampsia-Affected Pregnancies

    Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a common pregnancy complication that affects up to 5% of pregnancies worldwide. Recent studies demonstrate that Vitamin D deficiency is implicated in reduced fetal growth, which may be rescued by supplementation of Vitamin D. Despite this, the pathway(s) by which Vitamin D modulate fetal growth remains to be investigated. Our own studies demonstrate that the Vitamin D receptor (VDR) is significantly decreased in placentae from human pregnancies complicated by FGR and contributes to abnormal placental trophoblast apoptosis and differentiation and regulation of cell-cycle genes in vitro. Thus, Vitamin D signaling is important for normal placental function and fetal growth. This review discusses the association of Vitamin D with fetal growth, the function of Vitamin D and its receptor in pregnancy, as well as the functional significance of a placental source of Vitamin D in FGR. Additionally, we propose that for Vitamin D to be clinically effective to prevent and manage FGR, the molecular mechanisms of Vitamin D and its receptor in modulating fetal growth requires further investigation

    Spontaneous Thyroid Hemorrhage on Chronic Anticoagulation Therapy.

    Even though highly vascularized, the thyroid gland rarely has spontaneous bleeding. Bleeding into the thyroid gland can result in potentially lethal acute airway compromise. This case report describes an elderly patient on warfarin for atrial fibrillation, who presented with swelling on the right side of her neck causing acute airway obstruction. An urgent computed tomography of the neck showed an enlarging hemorrhage into the right lobe of the thyroid gland. She was initially intubated for airway protection and her anticoagulation was reversed to stop the bleeding. She was closely monitored in the intensive care unit. After an uncomplicated tracheal extubation and recovery, she was discharged and scheduled for an elective total thyroidectomy. We desire that physicians be aware of this rare, potentially lethal bleeding complication

    Study on an indirect solar dryer for drying sliced bitter gourd using PCM

    Solar dryers are of significant importance in the food industry since they facilitate the preservation of various edible products, including cereals, vegetables, and fish, by effectively extracting moisture from products. In the current study, an indirect type cabinet solar dryer had been constructed to dry the bitter gourd pieces. To enhance the efficacy of the solar dryer during late evening hours, an inorganic salt, sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate (Na2S2O3. 5H2O) serving as a phase changing material (PCM), was incorporated into the collecting area of the dryer. The study examined the process parameters, including the moisture ratio, dryer inlet temperature and the outlet temperature, for the dehydration of sliced bitter gourds in two scenarios: an indirect solar dryer without phase change material (IDSD), and a solar dryer with PCM (IDSD-PCM). The experiment involved maintaining a constant mass flow rate of air at 0.07 kg/s, while operating the dryer for a duration of nine hours in an experimental day. The findings obtained were evaluated, and the impact of incorporating PCM into the indirect solar dryer was examined and reported. The findings of the study indicated that the inclusion of PCM inside the collecting area had a substantial impact on the temperature of the drying chamber, particularly during the late evening hours. Furthermore, the utilization of PCM resulted in a notable increase of 5.1% per day in the proportion of moisture extracted from sliced bitter gourds

    Data envelopment analysis in financial services: a citations network analysis of banks, insurance companies and money market funds

    Development and application of the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method, have been the subject of numerous reviews. In this paper, we consider the papers that apply DEA methods specifically to financial services, or which use financial services data to experiment with a newly introduced DEA model. We examine 620 papers published in journals indexed in the Web of Science database, from 1985 to April 2016. We analyse the sample applying citations network analysis. This paper investigates the DEA method and its applications in financial services. We analyse the diffusion of DEA in three sub-samples: (1) banking groups, (2) money market funds, and (3) insurance groups by identifying the main paths, that is, the main flows of the ideas underlying each area of research. This allows us to highlight the main approaches, models and efficiency types used in each research areas. No unique methodological preference emerges within these areas. Innovations in the DEA methodologies (network models, slacks based models, directional distance models and Nash bargaining game) clearly dominate recent research. For each subsample, we describe the geographical distribution of these studies, and provide some basic statistics related to the most active journals and scholars

    Failure of the placental capillary network to develop normally is associated with early onset fetal growth restriction (FGR) and pre-eclampsia (PE). Although the symptoms are observed at term, the problem begins in the first trimester. However, investigations at this clinically relevant time are hindered by difficulties in identifying earlystage pregnancies that are at risk of developing FGR/PE. Using uterine artery Doppler ultrasound in the first trimester as a proxy measure of poor placentation, we have identified pregnancies at increased risk of developing early onset FGR/PE. Placental endothelial cells (PEC) isolated from pregnancies at increased risk of developing FGR/PE grew more slowly and their basal rate of apoptosis was significantly higher than that seen in the normal group. The pro-apoptotic stimulus, TNFα, induced apoptosis in cells from both groups but this was significantly greater in the high risk group. TNF receptor expression was unaffected. Inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production significantly increased the sensitivity of cells from the normal pregnancies to TNFα but not in the high risk group establishing a functional role for NO in this system. In conclusion, first trimester PEC from pregnancies at increased risk of developing early onset FGR/PE were inherently more sensitive to apoptotic stimuli and this was functionally linked to the synthesis of NO. This may contribute to the poor placental vascular development seen in on going pregnancies

    Modeling adsorption in metal-organic frameworks with open metal sites : propane/propylene separations

    We present a new approach for modeling adsorption in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unsaturated metal centers and apply it to the challenging propane/propylene separation in copper(II) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (CuBTC). We obtain information about the specific interactions between olefins and the open metal sites of the MOP using quantum mechanical density functional theory. A proper consideration of all the relevant contributions to the adsorption energy enables us to extract the component that is due to specific attractive interactions between the pi-orbitals of the alkene and the coordinatively unsaturated metal. This component is fitted using a combination of a Morse potential and a power law function and is then included into classical grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations of adsorption. Using this modified potential model, together with a standard Lennard-Jones model, we are able to predict the adsorption of not only propane (where no specific interactions are present), but also of propylene (where specific interactions are dominant). Binary adsorption isotherms for this mixture are in reasonable agreement with ideal adsorbed solution theory predictions. We compare our approach with previous attempts to predict adsorption in MOFs with open metal sites and suggest possible future routes for improving our model
