Boxfishes (Teleostei: Ostraciidae) as a model system for fishes swimming with many fins: kinematics
Swimming movements in boxfishes were much more
complex and varied than classical descriptions indicated.
At low to moderate rectilinear swimming speeds
(<5 TL s^(-1), where TL is total body length), they were
entirely median- and paired-fin swimmers, apparently
using their caudal fins for steering. The pectoral and
median paired fins generate both the thrust needed for
forward motion and the continuously varied, interacting
forces required for the maintenance of rectilinearity. It
was only at higher swimming speeds (above 5 TL s^(-1)), when
burst-and-coast swimming was used, that they became
primarily body and caudal-fin swimmers. Despite their
unwieldy appearance and often asynchronous fin beats,
boxfish swam in a stable manner. Swimming boxfish used
three gaits. Fin-beat asymmetry and a relatively nonlinear
swimming trajectory characterized the first gait
(0–1 TL s^(-1)). The beginning of the second gait (1–3 TL s^(-1))
was characterized by varying fin-beat frequencies and
amplitudes as well as synchrony in pectoral fin motions.
The remainder of the second gait (3–5 TL s^(-1)) was
characterized by constant fin-beat amplitudes, varying finbeat
frequencies and increasing pectoral fin-beat
asynchrony. The third gait (>5 TL s^(-1)) was characterized
by the use of a caudal burst-and-coast variant. Adduction
was always faster than abduction in the pectoral fins.
There were no measurable refractory periods between
successive phases of the fin movement cycles. Dorsal and
anal fin movements were synchronized at speeds greater
than 2.5 TL s^(-1), but were often out of phase with pectoral
fin movements
Compatibility of theta13 and the Type I Seesaw Model with A4 Symmetry
We derive formulae for neutrino masses and mixing angles in a type I seesaw
framework with an underlying A4 flavor symmetry. In particular, the Majorana
neutrino mass matrix includes contributions from an A4 triplet, 1, 1', and 1"
flavon fields. Using these formulae, we constrain the general A4 parameter
space using the updated global fits on neutrino mixing angles and mass squared
differences, including results from the Daya Bay and RENO experiments, and we
find predictive relations among the mixing parameters for certain choices of
the triplet vacuum expectation value. In the normal hierarchy case, sizable
deviation from maximal atmospheric mixing is predicted, and such deviation is
strongly correlated with the value of theta13 in the range of ~ (8-10) degrees.
On the other hand, such deviation is negligible and insensitive to theta13 in
the inverted mass hierarchy case. We also show expectations for the Dirac CP
phase resulting from the parameter scan. Future refined measurements of
neutrino mixing angles will test these predicted correlations and potentially

Rifts in Spreading Wax Layers
We report experimental results on the rift formation between two freezing wax
plates. The plates were pulled apart with constant velocity, while floating on
the melt, in a way akin to the tectonic plates of the earth's crust. At slow
spreading rates, a rift, initially perpendicular to the spreading direction,
was found to be stable, while above a critical spreading rate a "spiky" rift
with fracture zones almost parallel to the spreading direction developed. At
yet higher spreading rates a second transition from the spiky rift to a zig-zag
pattern occurred. In this regime the rift can be characterized by a single
angle which was found to be dependent on the spreading rate. We show that the
oblique spreading angles agree with a simple geometrical model. The coarsening
of the zig-zag pattern over time and the three-dimensional structure of the

New Young Star Candidates in BRC 27 and BRC 34
We used archival Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared data to search for
young stellar objects (YSOs) in the immediate vicinity of two bright-rimmed
clouds, BRC 27 (part of CMa R1) and BRC 34 (part of the IC 1396 complex). These
regions both appear to be actively forming young stars, perhaps triggered by
the proximate OB stars. In BRC 27, we find clear infrared excesses around 22 of
the 26 YSOs or YSO candidates identified in the literature, and identify 16 new
YSO candidates that appear to have IR excesses. In BRC 34, the one
literature-identified YSO has an IR excess, and we suggest 13 new YSO
candidates in this region, including a new Class I object. Considering the
entire ensemble, both BRCs are likely of comparable ages, within the
uncertainties of small number statistics and without spectroscopy to confirm or
refute the YSO candidates. Similarly, no clear conclusions can yet be drawn

Reversible, Opto-Mechanically Induced Spin-Switching in a Nanoribbon-Spiropyran Hybrid Material
It has recently been shown that electronic transport in zigzag graphene
nanoribbons becomes spin-polarized upon application of an electric field across
the nanoribbon width. However, the electric fields required to experimentally
induce this magnetic state are typically large and difficult to apply in
practice. Here, using both first-principles density functional theory (DFT) and
time-dependent DFT, we show that a new spiropyran-based, mechanochromic polymer
noncovalently deposited on a nanoribbon can collectively function as a dual
opto-mechanical switch for modulating its own spin-polarization. These
calculations demonstrate that upon mechanical stress or photoabsorption, the
spiropyran chromophore isomerizes from a closed-configuration ground-state to a
zwitterionic excited-state, resulting in a large change in dipole moment that
alters the electrostatic environment of the nanoribbon. We show that the
electronic spin-distribution in the nanoribbon-spiropyran hybrid material can
be reversibly modulated via noninvasive optical and mechanical stimuli without
the need for large external electric fields. Our results suggest that the
reversible spintronic properties inherent to the nanoribbon-spiropyran material
allow the possibility of using this hybrid structure as a resettable,
molecular-logic quantum sensor where opto-mechanical stimuli are used as inputs
and the spin-polarized current induced in the nanoribbon substrate is the

Leopards provide public health benefits in Mumbai, India
Populations of large carnivores are often suppressed in human-dominated landscapes because they can kill or injure people and domestic animals. However, carnivores can also provide beneficial services to human societies, even in urban environments. We examined the services provided by leopards (Panthera pardus) to the residents of Mumbai, India, one of the world's largest cities. We suggest that by preying on stray dogs, leopards reduce the number of people bitten by dogs, the risk of rabies transmission, and the costs associated with dog sterilization and management. Under one set of assumptions, the presence of leopards in this highly urbanized area could save up to 90 human lives per year. A further indirect benefit of leopard presence may be an increase in local abundance of other wildlife species that would otherwise be predated by dogs. The effective conservation of carnivores in human-dominated landscapes involves difficult trade-offs between human safety and conservation concerns. Quantitative assessments of how large carnivores negatively and positively affect urban ecosystems are critical, along with improved education of local communities about large carnivores and their impacts
Sex recognition by odour and variation in the uropygial gland secretion in starlings
1. Although a growing body of evidence supports that olfaction based on chemical compounds emitted by birds may play a role in individual recognition, the possible role of chemical cues in sexual selection of birds has been only preliminarily studied.2. We investigated for the first time whether a passerine bird, the spotless starling Sturnus unicolor, was able to discriminate the sex of conspecifics by using olfactory cues and whether the size and secretion composition of the uropygial gland convey information on sex, age and reproductive status in this species.3. We performed a blind choice experiment during mating, and we found that starlings were able to discriminate the sex of conspecifics by using chemical cues alone. Both male and female starlings preferred male scents. Furthermore, the analysis of the chemical composition of the uropygial gland secretion by using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) revealed differences between sexes, ages and reproductive status.4. In conclusion, our study reveals for first time that a passerine species can discriminate the sex of conspecifics by relying on chemical cues and suggests that the uropygial gland secretion may potentially function as a chemical signal used in mate choice and/or intrasexual competition in this species.This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science ⁄ FEDER (CGL2008-00718) and PIE 200930I029 to J. Eosinophils Are Important for Protection, Immunoregulation and Pathology during Infection with Nematode Microfilariae
Eosinophil responses typify both allergic and parasitic helminth disease. In helminthic disease, the role of eosinophils can be both protective in immune responses and destructive in pathological responses. To investigate whether eosinophils are involved in both protection and pathology during filarial nematode infection, we explored the role of eosinophils and their granule proteins, eosinophil peroxidase (EPO) and major basic protein-1 (MBP-1), during infection with Brugia malayi microfilariae. Using eosinophil-deficient mice (PHIL), we further clarify the role of eosinophils in clearance of microfilariae during primary, but not challenge infection in vivo. Deletion of EPO or MBP-1 alone was insufficient to abrogate parasite clearance suggesting that either these molecules are redundant or eosinophils act indirectly in parasite clearance via augmentation of other protective responses. Absence of eosinophils increased mast cell recruitment, but not other cell types, into the broncho-alveolar lavage fluid during challenge infection. In addition absence of eosinophils or EPO alone, augmented parasite-induced IgE responses, as measured by ELISA, demonstrating that eosinophils are involved in regulation of IgE. Whole body plethysmography indicated that nematode-induced changes in airway physiology were reduced in challenge infection in the absence of eosinophils and also during primary infection in the absence of EPO alone. However lack of eosinophils or MBP-1 actually increased goblet cell mucus production. We did not find any major differences in cytokine responses in the absence of eosinophils, EPO or MBP-1. These results reveal that eosinophils actively participate in regulation of IgE and goblet cell mucus production via granule secretion during nematode-induced pathology and highlight their importance both as effector cells, as damage-inducing cells and as supervisory cells that shape both innate and adaptive immunity
