Information seeking and reciprocity: A transformational analysis
The motivation to reciprocate is analyzed within the framework of interdependence theory, with focus on the process of transformation of situations. A model of transformation is presented for the motivation to reciprocate and hypotheses regarding allocation behavior and information seeking are derived. The hypotheses are tested in two experiments implementing a game where participants allocate payoff to self and other in a sequential way, with one participant able to gather costly information regarding the other's previous behavior. Individual differences in the motivation to reciprocate are assessed with the Personal Norm of Reciprocity questionnaire. Results show that participants with high motivation to reciprocate seek information regarding other's past behavior, and react to this information as the norm of reciprocity prescribes. Participants with low motivation to reciprocate prefer information regarding the future of the interaction (Study 1), or no information (Study 2), and behave in a more selfish way. Results are discussed with respect of (1) the transformation of situation process, (2) the role of reciprocity as an interpersonal motive, and (3) the validity of the individual differences measure. Can implementation intentions and text messages promote brisk walking? A randomized trial.
Objective: To test the efficacy in promoting brisk walking of two theory-based interventions that incorporate implementation intentions and text message (Short Message Service; SMS) reminders directed at one’s walking-related plans or goals. Design: Participants (N = 149) were randomized to one of three conditions (implementation intention + SMS plan reminder, implementation intention + SMS goal reminder, control) before completing measures at baseline and follow-up 4 weeks later. At follow-up, the experimental groups were given a surprise recall task concerning their plans. All participants completed an equivalent goal recall task. Main Outcome Measures: Validated self-report measures of physical activity and measures of implementation intention and goal recall, weight, and waist-to-hip ratio. Results: Both intervention groups increased their brisk walking relative to the control group, without reducing other physical activity. The goal reminder group lost the most weight. The SMS plan reminder group recalled more of their plans than the SMS goal reminder group, but the latter were more successful in goal recall. Conclusion: Both interventions can promote brisk walking in sedentary populations. Text messages aid the recall of, and could enhance interventions that target, implementation intentions and goals
Looking for a simple Big Five factorial structure in the domain of adjectives.
The Big Five factors structure is currently the benchmark for personality dimensions. In the domain of adjectives, various instruments have been developed to measure the Big Five. In this contribution the authors propose a methodology to find a simple factorial structure and apply this methodology to the domain of Big Five as measured by adjectives. Using data collected on a sample of 337 Ss (mean age 21.69 yrs), a five-factor benchmark structure is proposed derived from the 50 best marker adjectives selected among the adjectives contained in three instruments specifically developed to measure the Big Five (i.e., L. R. Goldberg's 100 adjectives list, IASR-B5, and SACBIF (1992)). They use this common factor structure (or benchmark structure) to investigate the differences and the similarities between the three operationalizations of the Big Five, and to investigate the placements of the full set of adjectives contained in the three instruments. The main features of the proposed methodology and the generalizability of the obtained results are discussed
Money Walks: A Human-Centric Study on the Economics of Personal Mobile Data
In the context of a myriad of mobile apps which collect personally
identifiable information (PII) and a prospective market place of personal data,
we investigate a user-centric monetary valuation of mobile PII. During a 6-week
long user study in a living lab deployment with 60 participants, we collected
their daily valuations of 4 categories of mobile PII (communication, e.g.
phonecalls made/received, applications, e.g. time spent on different apps,
location and media, photos taken) at three levels of complexity (individual
data points, aggregated statistics and processed, i.e. meaningful
interpretations of the data). In order to obtain honest valuations, we employ a
reverse second price auction mechanism. Our findings show that the most
sensitive and valued category of personal information is location. We report
statistically significant associations between actual mobile usage, personal
dispositions, and bidding behavior. Finally, we outline key implications for

Strain-induced magma degassing: insights from simple-shear experiments on bubble bearing melts
International audienceExperiments have been performed to determine the effect of deformation on degassing of bubble-bearing melts. Cylindrical specimens of phonolitic composition, initial water content of 1.5 wt.% and 2 vol.% bubbles, have been deformed in simple-shear (torsional configuration) in an internally heated Paterson-type pressure vessel at temperatures of 798-848 K, 100-180 MPa confining pressure and different final strains. Micro-structural analyses of the samples before and after deformation have been performed in two and three dimensions using optical microscopy, a nanotomography machine and synchrotron tomography. The water content of the glasses before and after deformation has been measured using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In samples strained up to a total of γ ∼ 2 the bubbles record accurately the total strain, whereas at higher strains (γ ∼ 10) the bubbles become very flattened and elongate in the direction of shear. The residual water content of the glasses remains constant up to a strain of γ ∼ 2 and then decreases to about 0.2 wt.% at γ ∼ 10. Results show that strain enhances bubble coalescence and degassing even at low bubble volume-fractions. Noticeably, deformation produced a strongly water under-saturated melt. This suggests that degassing may occur at great depths in the volcanic conduit and may force the magma to become super-cooled early during ascent to the Earth's surface potentially contributing to the genesis of obsidian
Anti-angiogenic potential of VEGF blocker dendron-laden gellan gum hydrogels for tissue engineering applications
Damage of non-vascularised tissues such as cartilage and cornea can result in healing processes accompanied by a non-physiological angiogenesis. Peptidic aptamers have recently been reported to block the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). However, the therapeutic applications of these aptamers is limited due to their short half-life in vivo. In this work, an enhanced stability and bioavailability of a known VEGF blocker aptamer sequence (WHLPFKC) was pursued through its tethering of molecular scaffolds based on hyperbranched peptides, the poly(É -lysine) dendrons, bearing three branching generations. The proposed design allowed simultaneous and orderly-spaced exposure of sixteen aptamers per dendrimer to the surrounding biological microenvironent, as well as a relatively hydrophobic core based on di-phenylalanine aiming to promote an hydrophobic interaction with the hydrophobic moieties of ionically-crosslinked metacrylated gellan gum (iGG-MA) hydrogels. The VEGF blocker dendrons were entrapped in iGG-MA hydrogels and their capacity to prevent endothelial cell sprouting was assessed qualitatively and quantitatively using 3D in vitro models and the in vivo chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. The data demonstrate that at nanoscale concentrations, the dendronised structures were able to enhance control of the biological actvity of WHLPFKC at the material/tissue interface and hence the anti-angiogenic capacity of iGG-MA hydrogels not only preventing blood vessel invasion, but also inducing their regression at the tissue/iGG-MA interface. The in ovo study confirmed that iGG-MA functionalised with the dendron VEGF blockers do inhibit angiogenesis by controlling both size and ramifications of blood vessels in proximity of the implanted gel surface.This work was mainly supported by the EC FP7 project Disc Regeneration (Contract No

Functionalisation of methacrylated gellan gum hydrogels by anti-angiogenic dendrons
The regeneration of cartilage in the intervertebral disc nucleus pulposus
and joints is impaired by the formation of fibrocartilage that is
caused by the invasion of the tissue by blood vessels. Peptides have
been identified by phage display technique which are able to bind
VEGF thus inhibiting angiogenesis. The present works focusses on the
synthesis of poly(epsilon-lysine) dendrons of three branching generations
in which the molecular root of the dendron bears a di-phenylalanine
sequence to promote hydrophobic interactions with material
surfaces and the uppermost molecular branches are functionalised with
the amino acid sequenceWHLPFKC that is known to block VEGF. These
biofunctionalised dendrons were entrapped in methacrylated Gellan
Gum (GG-MA) hydrogels and tested for their ability to inhibit endothelial
cell sprouting by both a 3D in vitro cell models and an in ovo
model. The results show that when GG-MA is functionalised with the
dendronised VEGF blockers, a regression of angiogenesis takes place
around the hydrogel boundary. The in ovo study supports these findings
as the GG-MA functionalised with the dendronised VEGF blockers
did not elicit any acute inflammatory response, and decrease the number
of converging macroscopic blood vessels as compared to positive
controls. Moreover, the hydrogels prevented the infiltration of blood

Sunscreens - Which and what for?
It is well established that sun exposure is the main cause for the development of skin cancer. Chronic continuous UV radiation is believed to induce malignant melanoma, whereas intermittent high-dose UV exposure contributes to the occurrence of actinic keratosis as precursor lesions of squamous cell carcinoma as well as basal cell carcinoma. Not only photocarcinogenesis but also the mechanisms of photoaging have recently become apparent. In this respect the use of sunscreens seemed to prove to be more and more important and popular within the last decades. However, there is still inconsistency about the usefulness of sunscreens. Several studies show that inadequate use and incomplete UV spectrum efficacy may compromise protection more than previously expected. The sunscreen market is crowded by numerous products. Inorganic sunscreens such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide have a wide spectral range of activity compared to most of the organic sunscreen products. It is not uncommon for organic sunscreens to cause photocontact allergy, but their cosmetic acceptability is still superior to the one given by inorganic sunscreens. Recently, modern galenic approaches such as micronization and encapsulation allow the development of high-quality inorganic sunscreens. The potential systemic toxicity of organic sunscreens has lately primarily been discussed controversially in public, and several studies show contradictory results. Although a matter of debate, at present the sun protection factor (SPF) is the most reliable information for the consumer as a measure of sunscreen filter efficacy. In this context additional tests have been introduced for the evaluation of not only the protective effect against erythema but also protection against UV-induced immunological and mutational effects. Recently, combinations of UV filters with agents active in DNA repair have been introduced in order to improve photoprotection. This article reviews the efficacy of sunscreens in the prevention of epithelial and nonepithelial skin cancer, the effect on immunosuppression and the value of the SPF as well as new developments on the sunscreen market.
