hp-finite-elements for simulating electromagnetic fields in optical devices with rough textures
The finite-element method is a preferred numerical method when
electromagnetic fields at high accuracy are to be computed in nano-optics
design. Here, we demonstrate a finite-element method using hp-adaptivity on
tetrahedral meshes for computation of electromagnetic fields in a device with
rough textures. The method allows for efficient computations on meshes with
strong variations in element sizes. This enables to use precise geometry
resolution of the rough textures. Convergence to highly accurate results is

E-Readers Are More Effective than Paper for Some with Dyslexia
E-readers are fast rivaling print as a dominant method for reading. Because they offer accessibility options that are impossible in print, they are potentially beneficial for those with impairments, such as dyslexia. Yet, little is known about how the use of these devices influences reading in those who struggle. Here, we observe reading comprehension and speed in 103 high school students with dyslexia. Reading on paper was compared with reading on a small handheld e-reader device, formatted to display few words per line. We found that use of the device significantly improved speed and comprehension, when compared with traditional presentations on paper for specific subsets of these individuals: Those who struggled most with phoneme decoding or efficient sight word reading read more rapidly using the device, and those with limited VA Spans gained in comprehension. Prior eye tracking studies demonstrated that short lines facilitate reading in dyslexia, suggesting that it is the use of short lines (and not the device per se) that leads to the observed benefits. We propose that these findings may be understood as a consequence of visual attention deficits, in some with dyslexia, that make it difficult to allocate attention to uncrowded text near fixation, as the gaze advances during reading. Shorter Lines Facilitate Reading in Those Who Struggle
People with dyslexia, who ordinarily struggle to read, sometimes remark that reading is easier when e-readers are used. Here, we used eye tracking to observe high school students with dyslexia as they read using these devices. Among the factors investigated, we found that reading using a small device resulted in substantial benefits, improving reading speeds by 27%, reducing the number of fixations by 11%, and importantly, reducing the number of regressive saccades by more than a factor of 2, with no cost to comprehension. Given that an expected trade-off between horizontal and vertical regression was not observed when line lengths were altered, we speculate that these effects occur because sluggish attention spreads perception to the left as the gaze shifts during reading. Short lines eliminate crowded text to the left, reducing regression. The effects of attention modulation by the hand, and of increased letter spacing to reduce crowding, were also found to modulate the oculomotor dynamics in reading, but whether these factors resulted in benefits or costs depended on characteristics, such as visual attention span, that varied within our sample
Uncertainty Principle for Control of Ensembles of Oscillators Driven by Common Noise
We discuss control techniques for noisy self-sustained oscillators with a
focus on reliability, stability of the response to noisy driving, and
oscillation coherence understood in the sense of constancy of oscillation
frequency. For any kind of linear feedback control--single and multiple delay
feedback, linear frequency filter, etc.--the phase diffusion constant,
quantifying coherence, and the Lyapunov exponent, quantifying reliability, can
be efficiently controlled but their ratio remains constant. Thus, an
"uncertainty principle" can be formulated: the loss of reliability occurs when
coherence is enhanced and, vice versa, coherence is weakened when reliability
is enhanced. Treatment of this principle for ensembles of oscillators
synchronized by common noise or global coupling reveals a substantial
difference between the cases of slightly non-identical oscillators and

Graphene-based modulation-doped superlattice structures
The electronic transport properties of graphene-based superlattice structures
are investigated. A graphene-based modulation-doped superlattice structure
geometry is proposed and consist of periodically arranged alternate layers:
InAs/graphene/GaAs/graphene/GaSb. Undoped graphene/GaAs/graphene structure
displays relatively high conductance and enhanced mobilities at elevated
temperatures unlike modulation-doped superlattice structure more steady and
less sensitive to temperature and robust electrical tunable control on the
screening length scale. Thermionic current density exhibits enhanced behaviour
due to presence of metallic (graphene) mono-layers in superlattice structure.
The proposed superlattice structure might become of great use for new types of
wide-band energy gap quantum devices.Comment: 5 figure

The Effect of Auditory Distraction on the Useful Field of View in Hearing Impaired Individuals and its implications for driving
This study assessed whether the increased demand of listening in hearing impaired individuals exacerbates the detrimental impact of auditory distraction on a visual task (useful field of view test), relative to normally hearing listeners. Auditory distraction negatively affects this visual task, which is linked with various driving performance outcomes. Hearing impaired and normally hearing participants performed useful field of view testing with and without a simultaneous listening task. They also undertook a cognitive test battery. For all participants, performing the visual and auditory tasks together reduced performance on each respective test. For a number of subtests, hearing impaired participants showed poorer visual task performance, though not to a statistically significant extent. Hearing impaired participants were significantly poorer at a reading span task than normally hearing participants and tended to score lower on the most visually complex subtest of the visual task in the absence of auditory task engagement. Useful field of view performance is negatively affected by auditory distraction, and hearing loss may present further problems, given the reductions in visual and cognitive task performance suggested in this study. Suggestions are made for future work to extend this study, given the practical importance of the findings
Eye movements and brain oscillations to symbolic safety signs with different comprehensibility
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate eye movements and brain oscillations to symbolic safety signs with different comprehensibility. Methods: Forty-two young adults participated in this study, and ten traffic symbols consisting of easy-to-comprehend and hard-to-comprehend signs were used as stimuli. During the sign comprehension test, real-time eye movements and spontaneous brain activity [electroencephalogram (EEG) data] were simultaneously recorded. Results: The comprehensibility level of symbolic traffic signs significantly affects eye movements and EEG spectral power. The harder to comprehend the sign is, the slower the blink rate, the larger the pupil diameter, and the longer the time to first fixation. Noticeable differences on EEG spectral power between easy-to-comprehend and hard-to-comprehend signs are observed in the prefrontal and visual cortex of the human brain. Conclusions: Sign comprehensibility has significant effects on real-time nonintrusive eye movements and brain oscillations. These findings demonstrate the potential to integrate physiological measures from eye movements and brain oscillations with existing evaluation methods in assessing the comprehensibility of symbolic safety signs.open
Route planning with transportation network maps: an eye-tracking study.
Planning routes using transportation network maps is a common task that has received little attention in the literature. Here, we present a novel eye-tracking paradigm to investigate psychological processes and mechanisms involved in such a route planning. In the experiment, participants were first presented with an origin and destination pair before we presented them with fictitious public transportation maps. Their task was to find the connecting route that required the minimum number of transfers. Based on participants' gaze behaviour, each trial was split into two phases: (1) the search for origin and destination phase, i.e., the initial phase of the trial until participants gazed at both origin and destination at least once and (2) the route planning and selection phase. Comparisons of other eye-tracking measures between these phases and the time to complete them, which depended on the complexity of the planning task, suggest that these two phases are indeed distinct and supported by different cognitive processes. For example, participants spent more time attending the centre of the map during the initial search phase, before directing their attention to connecting stations, where transitions between lines were possible. Our results provide novel insights into the psychological processes involved in route planning from maps. The findings are discussed in relation to the current theories of route planning
