Microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of carbon monolith via a soft-template method using resorcinol and formaldehyde as carbon precursor and pluronic F127 as template
A new microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of carbon monolith is reported in this work. The process uses microwave heating at 100 °C under acidic condition by employing a triblock copolymer F127 as the template, and resorcinol–formaldehyde as the carbon precursor. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen sorption measurements, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray studies and thermogravimetic analysis were used to characterize the synthesized material. The carbon monolith is crack-free, mesoporous and has a high surface area of 697 m²/g. The results demonstrate that the microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis is a fast and simple approach to obtain carbon monoliths, as it reduces effectively the synthesis time from hours to a few minutes which could be an advantage in the large scale production of the material

The results of an agricultural analysis of the ERTS-1 MSS data at the Johnson Space Center
The initial analysis of the ERTS-1 multispectral scanner (MSS) data at the Johnson Space Center (JSC), Houston, Texas is discussed. The primary data set utilized was the scene over Monterey Bay, California, on July 25, 1972, NASA ERTS ID No. 1002-18134. It was submitted to both computerized and image interpretative processing. An area in the San Joaquin Valley was submitted to an intensive evaluation of the ability of the data to (1) discriminate between crop types and (2) to provide a reasonably accurate area measurement of agricultural features of interest. The results indicate that the ERTS-1 MSS data is capable of providing the identifications and area extent of agricultural lands and field crop types
Muon capture in the front end of the IDS neutrino factory
We discuss the design of the muon capture front end of the neutrino factory
International Design Study. In the front end, a proton bunch on a target
creates secondary pions that drift into a capture transport channel, decaying
into muons. A sequence of rf cavities forms the resulting muon beams into
strings of bunches of differing energies, aligns the bunches to (nearly) equal
central energies, and initiates ionization cooling. The muons are then
accelerated to high energy where their decays provide neutrino beams. For the
International Design Study (IDS), a baseline design must be developed and
optimized for an engineering and cost study. We present a baseline design that

Phase-dependent exciton transport and energy harvesting from thermal environments
Non-Markovian effects in the evolution of open quantum systems have recently
attracted widespread interest, particularly in the context of assessing the
efficiency of energy and charge transfer in nanoscale biomolecular networks and
quantum technologies. With the aid of many-body simulation methods, we uncover
and analyse an ultrafast environmental process that causes energy relaxation in
the reduced system to depend explicitly on the phase relation of the initial
state preparation. Remarkably, for particular phases and system parameters, the
net energy flow is uphill, transiently violating the principle of detailed
balance, and implying that energy is spontaneously taken up from the
environment. A theoretical analysis reveals that non-secular contributions,
significant only within the environmental correlation time, underlie this
effect. This suggests that environmental energy harvesting will be observable

A variational description of the quantum phase transition in the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model
The sub-ohmic spin-boson model is known to possess a novel quantum phase
transition at zero temperature between a localised and delocalised phase. We
present here an analytical theory based on a variational ansatz for the ground
state, which describes a continuous localization transition with mean-field
exponents for . Our results for the critical properties show good
quantitiative agreement with previous numerical results, and we present a
detailed description of all the spin observables as the system passes through
the transition. Analysing the ansatz itself, we give an intuitive microscopic
description of the transition in terms of the changing correlations between the
system and bath, and show that it is always accompanied by a divergence of the
low-frequency boson occupations. The possible relevance of this divergence for
some numerical approaches to this problem is discussed and illustrated by
looking at the ground state obtained using density matrix renormalisation group
methods
Crossover from diffusive to strongly localized regime in two-dimensional systems
We have studied the conductance distribution function of two-dimensional
disordered noninteracting systems in the crossover regime between the diffusive
and the localized phases. The distribution is entirely determined by the mean
conductance, g, in agreement with the strong version of the single-parameter
scaling hypothesis. The distribution seems to change drastically at a critical
value very close to one. For conductances larger than this critical value, the
distribution is roughly Gaussian while for smaller values it resembles a
log-normal distribution. The two distributions match at the critical point with
an often appreciable change in behavior. This matching implies a jump in the
first derivative of the distribution which does not seem to disappear as system
size increases. We have also studied 1/g corrections to the skewness to
quantify the deviation of the distribution from a Gaussian function in the
