Job Polarization in the U.S.: A Reassessment of the Evidence from the 1980s and 1990s
In this paper, we review the evidence for job polarization in the U.S. and provide a description of the occupational employment changes that characterized the U.S. labor market during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. We begin by replicating the existing job polarization trends, which are produced using a modified occupational coding scheme intended to make occupational categories comparable over time. Using two alternative procedures to obtain consistent occupational codes across decades, we show that the finding that jobs polarized in the 1990s relative to the 1980s no longer holds. Instead, we find that occupational employment shifts were very similar during the two decades. In addition, we demonstrate that the method used to rank occupations according to their skill content has a substantial impact on the employment growth in low-skill job categories. Finally, using an additional occupational crosswalk that allows us to obtain consistent occupational categories from 1970 to 2002, we provide evidence in favor of a long-term trend towards employment growth in high-skill jobs and employment decline in some middle-skill jobs, but no sharp contrast between the 1980s and the 1990s. A parametric study of the value of hydrological information for irrigation and hydropower management of the Feather River
A case study analysis is presented of the relationships between improvements in the accuracy, frequency, and timeliness of information used in making hydrological forecasts and economic benefits in the areas of hydropower and irrigation. The area chosen for the case study is the Oroville Dam and Reservoir. Emphasis is placed on the use of timely and accurate mapping of the aerial extent of snow in the basin by earth resources survey systems such as LANDSAT. The subject of benefits resulting from improved runoff forecasts is treated in a generalized way without specifying the source of the improvements
Do arcs require flat halo cusps?
It was recently claimed that several galaxy clusters containing radial and
tangential gravitational arcs and having a measured velocity-dispersion profile
for the brightest cluster galaxy had to have central density profiles
considerably flatter than those found in CDM cluster simulations. Using a
simple analytic mass model, we confirm this result_for axially symmetric_ mass
distributions, but show that steep density profiles are well in agreement with
the cluster requiring the flattest axially symmetric profile once even small
deviations from axial symmetry are introduced.Comment: submitted to A&
Dynamical evidence for a strong tidal interaction between the Milky Way and its satellite, Leo V
We present a chemodynamical analysis of the Leo~V dwarf galaxy, based on Keck
II DEIMOS spectra of 8 member stars. We find a systemic velocity for the system
of kms, and barely resolve a
velocity dispersion for the system, with kms, consistent with previous studies of Leo~V. The
poorly resolved dispersion means we are unable to adequately constrain the dark
matter content of Leo~V. We find an average metallicity for the dwarf of
[Fe/H], and measure a significant spread in the iron abundance
of its member stars, with [Fe/H] dex, which cleanly
identifies Leo~V as a dwarf galaxy that has been able to self-enrich its
stellar population through extended star formation. Owing to the tentative
photometric evidence for tidal substructure around Leo~V, we also investigate
whether there is any evidence for tidal stripping or shocking of the system
within its dynamics. We measure a significant velocity gradient across the
system, of kms per
arcmin (or kms~kpc), which points almost directly
toward the Galactic centre. We argue that Leo~V is likely a dwarf on the brink
of dissolution, having just barely survived a past encounter with the centre of

The Environmental Dependence of the Incidence of Galactic Tidal Features
In a sample of 54 galaxy clusters (0.04<z<0.15) containing 3551 early-type
galaxies suitable for study, we identify those with tidal features both
interactively and automatically. We find that ~3% have tidal features that can
be detected with data that reaches a 3-sigma sensitivity limit of 26.5 mag
arcsec^-2. Regardless of the method used to classify tidal features, or the
fidelity imposed on such classifications, we find a deficit of tidally
disturbed galaxies with decreasing clustercentric radius that is most
pronounced inside of ~0.5R_200. We cannot distinguish whether the trend arises
from an increasing likelihood of recent mergers with increasing clustercentric
radius or a decrease in the lifetime of tidal features with decreasing
clustercentric radius. We find no evidence for a relationship between local
density and the incidence of tidal features, but our local density measure has
large uncertainties. We find interesting behavior in the rate of tidal features
among cluster early-types as a function of clustercentric radius and expect
such results to provide constraints on the effect of the cluster environment on
the structure of galaxy halos, the build-up of the red sequence of galaxies,

Shadow epitaxy for in-situ growth of generic semiconductor/superconductor devices
Uniform, defect-free crystal interfaces and surfaces are crucial ingredients
for realizing high-performance nanoscale devices. A pertinent example is that
advances in gate-tunable and topological superconductivity using
semiconductor/superconductor electronic devices are currently built on the hard
proximity-induced superconducting gap obtained from epitaxial indium
arsenide/aluminium heterostructures. Fabrication of devices requires selective
etch processes; these exist only for InAs/Al hybrids, precluding the use of
other, potentially superior material combinations. We present a crystal growth
platform -- based on three-dimensional structuring of growth substrates --
which enables synthesis of semiconductor nanowire hybrids with in-situ
patterned superconductor shells. This platform eliminates the need for etching,
thereby enabling full freedom in choice of hybrid constituents. We realise and
characterise all the most frequently used architectures in superconducting
hybrid devices, finding increased yield and electrostatic stability compared to
etched devices, along with evidence of ballistic superconductivity. In addition
to aluminium, we present hybrid devices based on tantalum, niobium and
vanadium.

Preliminary Results from the Caltech Core-Collapse Project (CCCP)
We present preliminary results from the Caltech Core-Collapse Project (CCCP),
a large observational program focused on the study of core-collapse SNe.
Uniform, high-quality NIR and optical photometry and multi-epoch optical
spectroscopy have been obtained using the 200'' Hale and robotic 60''
telescopes at Palomar, for a sample of 50 nearby core-collapse SNe. The
combination of both well-sampled optical light curves and multi-epoch
spectroscopy will enable spectroscopically and photometrically based subtype
definitions to be disentangled from each other. Multi-epoch spectroscopy is
crucial to identify transition events that evolve among subtypes with time. The
CCCP SN sample includes every core-collapse SN discovered between July 2004 and
September 2005 that was visible from Palomar, found shortly (< 30 days) after
explosion (based on available pre-explosion photometry), and closer than ~120
Mpc. This complete sample allows, for the first time, a study of core-collapse
SNe as a population, rather than as individual events. Here, we present the
full CCCP SN sample and show exemplary data collected. We analyze available
data for the first ~1/3 of the sample and determine the subtypes of 13 SNe II
based on both light curve shapes and spectroscopy. We discuss the relative SN
II subtype fractions in the context of associating SN subtypes with specific
