Influence of steel grain size on residual stress in grinding processing
金沢大学大学院自然科学研究科The fine-grained rolling steels NFG600 and the conventional usual rolling steels SM490 were processed by sand paper polishing and mechanical grinding to compare the residual stress generated after processing. The average grain size of NFG600 and SM490 is 3 μm and 15μm respectively. Therefore improvement of mechanical properties for such fine-grained steels is expected, it is important to understand the residual stress state of new fine-grained materials with processing. In this study, multi axial stresses of two kinds of specimens after polishing and grinding were measured by three kinds of analysis methods including cos-ψ method. As a result, as for σ33, the stress of NFG was compression, though that of SM490 was tension. © (2010) Trans Tech Publications

Small primary adenocarcinoma in adenomyosis with nodal metastasis: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Malignant transformation of adenomyosis is a very rare event. Only about 30 cases of this occurrence have been documented till now.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>The patient was a 57-year-old woman with a slightly enlarged uterus, who underwent total hysterectomy and unilateral adnexectomy. On gross inspection, the uterine wall displayed a single nodule measuring 5 cm and several small gelatinous lesions. Microscopic examination revealed a common leiomyoma and multiple adenomyotic foci. A few of these glands were transformed into a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. The endometrium was completely examined and tumor free. The carcinoma was, therefore, considered to be an endometrioid adenocarcinoma arising from adenomyosis. Four months later, an ultrasound scan revealed enlarged pelvic lymph nodes: a cytological diagnosis of metastatic adenocarcinoma was made.</p> <p>Immunohistochemical studies showed an enhanced positivity of the tumor site together with the neighbouring adenomyotic foci for estrogen receptors, aromatase, p53 and COX-2 expression when compared to the distant adenomyotic glands and the endometrium. We therefore postulate that the neoplastic transformation of adenomyosis implies an early carcinogenic event involving p53 and COX-2; further tumor growth is sustained by an autocrine-paracrine loop, based on a modulation of hormone receptors as well as aromatase and COX-2 local expression.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Adenocarcinoma in adenomyosis may be affected by local hormonal influence and, despite its small size, may metastasize.</p

Prematurely ruptured dominant follicles often retain competent oocytes in infertile women
AbstractOvulation consists of a follicle’s rupture and subsequent oocyte extrusion, although there is a paucity of evidence regarding whether every follicle’s rupture is associated with extrusion of its oocyte. We examined this issue in a large-scale window-of-opportunity study by attempting aspiration of single dominant follicles that were found to have ruptured before a scheduled oocyte retrieval during in vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer treatment of infertile women. We were able to aspirate 587 of 1,071 ultrasonographically confirmed post-rupture dominant follicles from 1,071 women (i.e. one dominant follicle per woman) and retrieved 225 oocytes (oocyte recovery ratio: 43.4% of aspirated follicles), which yielded 28 live births (live birth ratio: 11.0% of retrieved oocytes). Interestingly, the live birth ratio for post-rupture dominant follicles was not statistically different from that achieved using regular pre-rupture aspiration of dominant follicles (1,085/8,977, 12.1%). These findings suggest that oocyte extrusion frequently does not occur after follicle rupture in infertile women undergoing in vitro fertilisation treatment, although the oocyte retained in the follicle can remain competent for use during that treatment.</jats:p
Efficient Subtractive Cloning of Genes Activated by Lipopolysaccharide and Interferon γ in Primary-Cultured Cortical Cells of Newborn Mice.
Innate immune responses play a central role in neuroprotection and neurotoxicity during inflammatory processes that are triggered by pathogen-associated molecular pattern-exhibiting agents such as bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and that are modulated by inflammatory cytokines such as interferon γ (IFNγ). Recent findings describing the unexpected complexity of mammalian genomes and transcriptomes have stimulated further identification of novel transcripts involved in specific physiological and pathological processes, such as the neural innate immune response that alters the expression of many genes. We developed a system for efficient subtractive cloning that employs both sense and antisense cRNA drivers, and coupled it with in-house cDNA microarray analysis. This system enabled effective direct cloning of differentially expressed transcripts, from a small amount (0.5 µg) of total RNA. We applied this system to isolation of genes activated by LPS and IFNγ in primary-cultured cortical cells that were derived from newborn mice, to investigate the mechanisms involved in neuroprotection and neurotoxicity in maternal/perinatal infections that cause various brain injuries including periventricular leukomalacia. A number of genes involved in the immune and inflammatory response were identified, showing that neonatal neuronal/glial cells are highly responsive to LPS and IFNγ. Subsequent RNA blot analysis revealed that the identified genes were activated by LPS and IFNγ in a cooperative or distinctive manner, thereby supporting the notion that these bacterial and cellular inflammatory mediators can affect the brain through direct but complicated pathways. We also identified several novel clones of apparently non-coding RNAs that potentially harbor various regulatory functions. Characterization of the presently identified genes will give insights into mechanisms and interventions not only for perinatal infection-induced brain damage, but also for many other innate immunity-related brain disorders
