Superimposed Pilots are Superior for Mitigating Pilot Contamination in Massive MIMO
In this paper, superimposed pilots are introduced as an alternative to time-multiplexed pilot and data symbols for mitigating pilot contamination in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We propose a non-iterative scheme for uplink channel estimation based on superimposed pilots and derive an expression for the uplink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the output of a matched filter employing this channel estimate. Based on this expression, we observe that power control is essential when superimposed pilots are employed. Moreover, the quality of the channel estimate can be improved by reducing the interference that results from transmitting data alongside the pilots, and an intuitive iterative data-aided scheme that reduces this component of interference is also proposed. Approximate expressions for the uplink SINR are provided for the iterative data-aided method as well. In addition, we show that a hybrid system with users utilizing both time-multiplexed and superimposed pilots is superior to an optimally designed system that employs only time-multiplexed pilots, even when the non-iterative channel estimate is used to build the detector and precoder. We also describe a simple approach to implement this hybrid system by minimizing the overall inter and intra-cell interference. Numerical simulations demonstrating the performance of the proposed channel estimation schemes and the superiority of the hybrid system are also provided
The Decay of Disease Association with Declining Linkage Disequilibrium: A Fine Mapping Theorem
Several important and fundamental aspects of disease genetics models have yet to be described. One such property is the relationship of disease association statistics at a marker site closely linked to a disease causing site. A complete description of this two-locus system is of particular importance to experimental efforts to fine map association signals for complex diseases. Here, we present a simple relationship between disease association statistics and the decline of linkage disequilibrium from a causal site. Specifically, the ratio of Chi-square disease association statistics at a marker site and causal site is equivalent to the standard measure of pairwise linkage disequilibrium, r2. A complete derivation of this relationship from a general disease model is shown. Quite interestingly, this relationship holds across all modes of inheritance. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations using a disease genetics model applied to chromosomes subjected to a standard model of recombination are employed to better understand the variation around this fine mapping theorem due to sampling effects. We also use this relationship to provide a framework for estimating properties of a non-interrogated causal site using data at closely linked markers. Lastly, we apply this way of examining association data from high-density genotyping in a large, publicly-available data set investigating extreme BMI. We anticipate that understanding the patterns of disease association decay with declining linkage disequilibrium from a causal site will enable more powerful fine mapping methods and provide new avenues for identifying causal sites/genes from fine-mapping studies
Quasinormal Spectrum and Quantization of Charged Black Holes
Black-hole quasinormal modes have been the subject of much recent attention,
with the hope that these oscillation frequencies may shed some light on the
elusive theory of quantum gravity. We study {\it analytically} the asymptotic
quasinormal spectrum of a {\it charged} scalar field in the (charged)
Reissner-Nordstr\"om spacetime. We find an analytic expression for these
black-hole resonances in terms of the black-hole physical parameters: its
Bekenstein-Hawking temperature , and its electric potential . We
discuss the applicability of the results in the context of black-hole
quantization. In particular, we show that according to Bohr's correspondence
principle, the asymptotic resonance corresponds to a fundamental area unit

Awareness of the Role of Nutrition in Cancer Causation and Prevention among Rural Adult Population: A Cross-sectional Study
Background
In recent years, nutrition has received an increasingly important role in the aetiology of cancer. Thus, public education about dietary factors associated with cancer risk or prevention could be an important intervention for cancer prevention, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where the burden of cancer is increasing rapidly and access to care is limited. This study aimed to assess the awareness among rural adults about the role of nutrition in cancer development and its prevention.
Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 individuals in the adult population (\u3e 18 years) in rural field practice area of a Medical College in South Karnataka for 3 months (June-August 2023) using a convenient sampling technique. Nutritional knowledge on cancer prevention was assessed using a semi-structured questionnaire which included sociodemographic details and multiple-choice questions. Data was entered in Microsoft Excel and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS V.26. Those who scored \u3e mean correct answer were considered as having good knowledge.
Results
Out of 300 study participants, 98% were aware of the disease of cancer, and 93% believed that nutrition played a role in cancer causation. 216 (72%) participants had good knowledge about role of nutrition in cancer causation and prevention whereas 84 (28%) had poor knowledge. A statistically significant association was observed between the participant’s age, religion and occupation with the knowledge level.
Conclusion
Majority of the participants had good knowledge about nutrition’s role in cancer causation and prevention
Introduction: reconsidering the region in India: mobilities, actors and development politics
In this introduction to a special issue on ‘Reconsidering the Region in India’, we aim to develop a synthetic and theoretically nuanced account of the multifarious ways in which the idea of region has been imbricated in diverse spatial, political, cultural and socio-economic configurations. We draw from various bodies of anthropological, geographic and historical literature to elaborate on three themes that we believe are central to understanding contemporary processes of region-making in India: trans-regional mobilities and connections; the actors who produce and perform regional imaginaries; and changing regional politics of development.IS
Alcohol-related brain damage in humans
Chronic excessive alcohol intoxications evoke cumulative damage to tissues and organs. We examined prefrontal cortex (Brodmann’s area (BA) 9) from 20 human alcoholics and 20 age, gender, and postmortem delay matched control subjects. H & E staining and light microscopy of prefrontal cortex tissue revealed a reduction in the levels of cytoskeleton surrounding the nuclei of cortical and subcortical neurons, and a disruption of subcortical neuron patterning in alcoholic subjects. BA 9 tissue homogenisation and one dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) proteomics of cytosolic proteins identified dramatic reductions in the protein levels of spectrin β II, and α- and β-tubulins in alcoholics, and these were validated and quantitated by Western blotting. We detected a significant increase in α-tubulin acetylation in alcoholics, a non-significant increase in isoaspartate protein damage, but a significant increase in protein isoaspartyl methyltransferase protein levels, the enzyme that triggers isoaspartate damage repair in vivo. There was also a significant reduction in proteasome activity in alcoholics. One dimensional PAGE of membrane-enriched fractions detected a reduction in β-spectrin protein levels, and a significant increase in transmembranous α3 (catalytic) subunit of the Na+,K+-ATPase in alcoholic subjects. However, control subjects retained stable oligomeric forms of α-subunit that were diminished in alcoholics. In alcoholics, significant loss of cytosolic α- and β-tubulins were also seen in caudate nucleus, hippocampus and cerebellum, but to different levels, indicative of brain regional susceptibility to alcohol-related damage. Collectively, these protein changes provide a molecular basis for some of the neuronal and behavioural abnormalities attributed to alcoholics
Terahertz magneto-optical spectroscopy of two-dimensional hole and electron systems
We have used terahertz (THz) magneto-optical spectroscopy to investigate the
cyclotron resonance in high mobility two-dimensional electron and hole systems.
Our experiments reveal long-lived (~20 ps) coherent oscillations in the
measured signal in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The
cyclotron frequency extracted from the oscillations varies linearly with
magnetic field for a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), as expected. However,
we find that the complex non-parabolic valence band structure in a
two-dimensional hole gas (2DHG) causes the cyclotron frequency and effective
mass to vary nonlinearly with the magnetic field, as verified by multiband
Landau level calculations. This is the first time that THz magneto-optical
spectroscopy has been used to study 2DHG, and we expect that these results will
motivate further studies of these unique 2D nanosystems.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
Comparative HPTLC analysis of stem and leaf of Achyranthes coynei with Achyranthes aspera
Leaf and stem materials of Achyranthes coynei and Achyranthes aspera were used for HPTLC analysis. HPTLC plates were developed on n-hexane: ethyl acetate (5:1 v/v) solvent system. The densitometric profiles were evaluated to elucidate differences within and among the species. The Rf values and number of peaks obtained in densitrogram indicated chemical variation in the species. Although, both species had more or less equal number of peaks, their Rf values, %height and %area varied. Thus HPTLC analysis in absence of external standards, proved to be an informative tool for evaluating differences between these species and their parts
