Effectiveness evaluation of STOL transport operations (phase 2)
A computer simulation program which models a commercial short-haul aircraft operating in the civil air system was developed. The purpose of the program is to evaluate the effect of a given aircraft avionics capability on the ability of the aircraft to perform on-time carrier operations. The program outputs consist primarily of those quantities which can be used to determine direct operating costs. These include: (1) schedule reliability or delays, (2) repairs/replacements, (3) fuel consumption, and (4) cancellations. More comprehensive models of the terminal area environment were added and a simulation of an existing airline operation was conducted to obtain a form of model verification. The capability of the program to provide comparative results (sensitivity analysis) was then demonstrated by modifying the aircraft avionics capability for additional computer simulations
An increase in under hydrostatic pressure in the superconducting doped topological insulator NbBiSe
We report an unexpected positive hydrostatic pressure derivative of the
superconducting transition temperature in the doped topological insulator \NBS
via SQUID magnetometry in pressures up to 0.6 GPa. This result is contrary
to reports on the homologues \CBS and \SBS where smooth suppression of is
observed. Our results are consistent with recent Ginzburg-Landau theory
predictions of a pressure-induced enhancement of in the nematic
multicomponent state proposed to explain observations of rotational
symmetry breaking in doped BiSe superconductors.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Evidence for Anisotropic Vortex Dynamics and Pauli Limitation in the Upper Critical Field of FeSe1-xTex
We have determined HC2(T) for FeSe1-xTex (x=0.52) single crystals using
resistivity measurements at high static and pulsed magnetic field, as well as
specific heat measurements up to 9T. We find that the significant anisotropy of
the initial slope of HC2(T) determined from resistivity measurements, is not
present when HC2 is determined from the specific heat results. This suggests
that the thermodynamic upper critical field is almost isotropic, and that
anisotropic vortex dynamics play a role. Further evidence of anisotropic vortex
dynamics is found in the behaviour in pulsed field. We also find that Pauli
limiting must be included in order to fit the temperature dependence of HC2,
indicating probably higher effective mass in FeSe1-xTex than in other Fe
superconductors
Electrostatically-Driven Granular Media: Phase Transitions and Coarsening
We report the experimental and theoretical study of electrostatically driven
granular material. We show that the charged granular medium undergoes a
hysteretic first order phase transition from the immobile condensed state
(granular solid) to a fluidized dilated state (granular gas) with a changing
applied electric field. In addition we observe a spontaneous precipitation of
dense clusters from the gas phase and subsequent coarsening - coagulation of
these clusters. Molecular dynamics simulations shows qualitative agreement with
experimental results.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
First-Order Vortex Lattice Melting and Magnetization of YBaCuO$_{7-\delta}
We present the first non-mean-field calculation of the magnetization
of YBaCuO both above and below the flux-lattice melting
temperature . The results are in good agreement with experiment as a
function of transverse applied field . The effects of fluctuations in both
order parameter and magnetic induction are included in the
Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional: fluctuates within the
lowest Landau level in each layer, while fluctuates uniformly according to
the appropriate Boltzmann factor. The second derivative is predicted to be negative throughout the vortex liquid state and
positive in the solid state. The discontinuities in entropy and magnetization
at melting are calculated to be per flux line per layer and
~emu~cm at a field of 50 kOe.Comment: 11 pages, 4 PostScript figures in one uuencoded fil
