The impact of business outsourcing on corporate real estate in India

Driven by Western companies\u27 requirements for efficiency and effectiveness, a trend towards outsourcing of business activities to India and other low-cost countries commenced in the early 1990s and has continued to grow at a surprisingly fast pace. In a relatively short timeframe India has become a global hub for back-office services, although the effect on the urban cities is yet to be fully comprehended. As American and European companies continue to relocate their information technology services and other back office works to the subcontinent, there has been a considerable flow-on effect on Indian corporate real estate. This paper addresses two key questions. Firstly, the factors important for Western companies\u27 outsourcing of organisational activities to India, and secondly, the effect of business outsourcing on corporate real estate locational requirements in India. A survey of corporate real estate representatives in India and the UK was conducted with the results providing an insight into the present state and possible future direction of outsourcing for India. This research presents a unique insight into the impacts of Western business outsourcing on corporate real estate in India, and presents findings that are useful to both organisations seeking to relocate business activities to India and for property market analysts looking to understand drivers behind this sustained demand for Indian corporate real estate

Anterolateral decompression for metastatic epidural spinal cord tumors

✓ Since 1981, 12 patients with epidural spinal cord compression from metastatic carcinoma have been treated surgically by a modified costotransversectomy approach for anterolateral decompression. Before surgery, all patients had received dexamethasone, and had deteriorated neurologically despite radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or steroid therapy. Postoperatively, nine patients (75%) improved neurologically and were ambulatory, two (17%) had no change in neurological status, and one patient was unchanged initially but deteriorated and died 8 weeks later. Anterolateral decompression by a modified costotransversectomy approach should be considered for management of ventrally located tumors or when posterior stabilization is considered a possible requirement following a proposed anterior decompression.</jats:p

Multiple intracranial aneurysms in sickle cell anemia

✓ Neurological complications of sickle cell anemia occur in 18% to 29% of patients with homozygous hemoglobin S disease. A review of the literature yielded reports of two cases, both treated conservatively, of multiple intracranial aneurysms occurring in patients with sickle cell anemia. The authors report two cases of subarachnoid hemorrhage secondary to multiple intracranial aneurysms in patients with sickle cell anemia. One of the two patients underwent three craniotomies for ablation of six intracranial aneurysms. The techniques used in the treatment of these patients are presented.</jats:p

REPRESENTATIVE IDEOLOGY AND THE VOTE FOR WELFARE REFORM

This article examines the congressional vote for HR3734, The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996. The primary concern is to identify the factors that had a significant influence over the voting decision, paying special attention to representative ideology measured by Americans for Democratic Action and American Conservative Union voting scores. An empirical model is developed and estimated using logistic regression. The model incorporates proxies for representative ideology, constituent ideology, constituent economic interests, and the potential for legislative shirking. The results indicate that representative ideology was an important factor in the vote, but that constituent ideology and interests were also influential. Knowledge of the pattern of voting on the original legislation should prove useful to policymakers as the need for further refinement of the welfare system becomes evident, as it almost surely will.
