Plasma composition in a sigmoidal anemone active region
Using spectra obtained by the EIS instrument onboard Hinode, we present a
detailed spatially resolved abundance map of an active region (AR)-coronal hole
(CH) complex that covers an area of 359 arcsec x 485 arcsec. The abundance map
provides first ionization potential (FIP) bias levels in various coronal
structures within the large EIS field of view. Overall, FIP bias in the small,
relatively young AR is 2-3. This modest FIP bias is a consequence of the AR
age, its weak heating, and its partial reconnection with the surrounding CH.
Plasma with a coronal composition is concentrated at AR loop footpoints, close
to where fractionation is believed to take place in the chromosphere. In the
AR, we found a moderate positive correlation of FIP bias with nonthermal
velocity and magnetic flux density, both of which are also strongest at the AR
loop footpoints. Pathways of slightly enhanced FIP bias are traced along some
of the loops connecting opposite polarities within the AR. We interpret the
traces of enhanced FIP bias along these loops to be the beginning of
fractionated plasma mixing in the loops. Low FIP bias in a sigmoidal channel
above the AR's main polarity inversion line where ongoing flux cancellation is
taking place, provides new evidence of a bald patch magnetic topology of a
sigmoid/flux rope configfiuration.Comment: For on-line animation, see

Vectorial Ribaucour Transformations for the Lame Equations
The vectorial extension of the Ribaucour transformation for the Lame
equations of orthogonal conjugates nets in multidimensions is given. We show
that the composition of two vectorial Ribaucour transformations with
appropriate transformation data is again a vectorial Ribaucour transformation,
from which it follows the permutability of the vectorial Ribaucour
transformations. Finally, as an example we apply the vectorial Ribaucour

Pulsed Flows Along a Cusp Structure Observed with SOO/AIA
We present observations of a cusp-shaped structure that formed after a flare and coronal mass ejection on 14 February 2011. Throughout the evolution of the cusp structure, blob features up to a few Mm in size were observed flowing along the legs and stalk of the cusp at projected speeds ranging from 50 to 150 km/sec. Around two dozen blob features, on order of 1 - 3 minutes apart, were tracked in multiple AlA EUV wavelengths. The blobs flowed outward (away from the Sun) along the cusp stalk, and most of the observed speeds were either constant or decelerating. We attempt to reconstruct the 3-D magnetic field of the evolving structure, discuss the possible drivers of the flows (including pulsed reconnect ion and tearing mode instability), and compare the observations to studies of pulsed reconnect ion and blob flows in the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere
Dynamical modelling of the elliptical galaxy NGC 2974
In this paper we analyse the relations between a previously described oblate
Jaffe model for an ellipsoidal galaxy and the observed quantities for NGC 2974,
and obtain the length and velocity scales for a relevant elliptical galaxy
model. We then derive the finite total mass of the model from these scales, and
finally find a good fit of an isotropic oblate Jaffe model by using the
Gauss-Hermite fit parameters and the observed ellipticity of the galaxy NGC
2974. The model is also used to predict the total luminous mass of NGC 2974,
assuming that the influence of dark matter in this galaxy on the image,
ellipticity and Gauss-Hermite fit parameters of this galaxy is negligible

An efficient semiparametric maxima estimator of the extremal index
The extremal index , a measure of the degree of local dependence in
the extremes of a stationary process, plays an important role in extreme value
analyses. We estimate semiparametrically, using the relationship
between the distribution of block maxima and the marginal distribution of a
process to define a semiparametric model. We show that these semiparametric
estimators are simpler and substantially more efficient than their parametric
counterparts. We seek to improve efficiency further using maxima over sliding
blocks. A simulation study shows that the semiparametric estimators are
competitive with the leading estimators. An application to sea-surge heights
combines inferences about with a standard extreme value analysis of

VALIDATION OF ENVISAT-1 LEVEL-2 PRODUCTS RELATED TO LOWER ATMOSPHERE O3 AND NOy CHEMISTRY BY A FTIR QUASI-GLOBAL NETWORK
A coordinated action involving eleven stations of the ground-based Network for Detection of Stratospheric Change (NDSC) equipped with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) instruments was conducted to contribute to the validation of the three atmospheric chemistry instruments onboard ENVISAT, that are MIPAS, SCIAMACHY and GOMOS.
The target products for validation are total columns of O3, CH4, CO and some important NOy species (NO2, HNO3, NO) and the source gas N2O. Together the eleven stations cover the latitudes between 79 °N and 78°S, including polar, mid -latitude and subtropical and tropical locations. The goal is to contribute to the assessment of the data quality of the aforementioned ENVISAT instruments, from a quasi-global perspective.
The period of intensive ground-based data collection for the benefit of the ENVISAT Validation Commissioning Phase that is dealt with in the present paper is July 15 to December 1, 2002. The FTIR network involved collected a data set corresponding to an equivalent of approximately 400 days of measurements; about three quarter of the data have already been submitted to the ENVISAT Calval database and are included in the present work.
Unfortunately, the distribution of ENVISAT data has been slow and limited. Only a limited number of coincidences has been found for making data inter-comparisons. Therefore, the conclusions drawn in this paper are very preliminary and cover only a limited set of data products from SCIAMACHY only.
Our findings up to now concerning the above mentioned target products are the following: (1) SCIAMACHY near infrared operational products (CO, CH4, N2O) have no scientific meaning yet, (2), the operational SCIAMACHY total vertical O3 column product derived in the ultraviolet window has undergone some improvements with changing versions of the processor(s) but it still underestimates the column by about 5 – 10 %, (3), the operational SCIAMACHY total vertical O3 column product derived in the visible window is unrealistically large, and (3), the operational NO2 total column product from SCIAMACHY seems to largely overestimate the real column, but very few coincidences and large dispersions of the data do inhibit any further conclusion at present.
In a next phase, the same ground-based correlative data set will be exploited to further validate the ENVISAT data as soon as more and reprocessed data will be distributed
Readout system test benches
We propose to develop and exploit versatile multi-purpose Personal Computer-based Test Benches to support the evaluation and design of the basic elements required for digital front-end readout and data transmission systems for an LHC experiment. These test benches will have modular hardware facilities for the operation of new readout system components under realistic conditions, and will implement advanced modern software engineering concepts. They will support components such as fast ADCs, hybrid fibre-optic transceivers, and the prototype VLSI systolic array and data-flow processors currently being developed in national research laboratories and by the emerging European HDTV industry. These efforts would also lay the foundations for projects involving the development of custom-designed VLSI circuits
Platelets Regulate Pulmonary Inflammation and Tissue Destruction in Tuberculosis.
RATIONALE: Platelets may interact with the immune system in tuberculosis (TB) to regulate human inflammatory responses that lead to morbidity and spread of infection. OBJECTIVES: To identify a functional role of platelets in the innate inflammatory and matrix-degrading response in TB. METHODS: Markers of platelet activation were examined in plasma from 50 patients with TB before treatment and 50 control subjects. Twenty-five patients were followed longitudinally. Platelet-monocyte interactions were studied in a coculture model infected with live, virulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) and dissected using qRT-PCR, Luminex multiplex arrays, matrix degradation assays, and colony counts. Immunohistochemistry detected CD41 (cluster of differentiation 41) expression in a pulmonary TB murine model, and secreted platelet factors were measured in BAL fluid from 15 patients with TB and matched control subjects. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Five of six platelet-associated mediators were upregulated in plasma of patients with TB compared with control subjects, with concentrations returning to baseline by Day 60 of treatment. Gene expression of the monocyte collagenase MMP-1 (matrix metalloproteinase-1) was upregulated by platelets in M.tb infection. Platelets also enhanced M.tb-induced MMP-1 and -10 secretion, which drove type I collagen degradation. Platelets increased monocyte IL-1 and IL-10 and decreased IL-12 and MDC (monocyte-derived chemokine; also known as CCL-22) secretion, as consistent with an M2 monocyte phenotype. Monocyte killing of intracellular M.tb was decreased. In the lung, platelets were detected in a TB mouse model, and secreted platelet mediators were upregulated in human BAL fluid and correlated with MMP and IL-1β concentrations.
