Interplay between quasi-periodicity and disorder in quantum spin chains in a magnetic field
We study the interplay between disorder and a quasi periodic coupling array
in an external magnetic field in a spin-1/2 XXZ chain. A simple real space
decimation argument is used to estimate the magnetization values where plateaux
show up. The latter are in good agreement with exact diagonalization results on
fairly long XX chains. Spontaneous susceptibility properties are also studied,
finding a logarithmic behaviour similar to the homogeneously disordered case.Comment: 5 RevTeX pages, 5 Postscript figures include
All Optical Implementation of Multi-Spin Entanglement in a Semiconductor Quantum Well
We use ultrafast optical pulses and coherent techniques to create spin
entangled states of non-interacting electrons bound to donors (at least three)
and at least two Mn2+ ions in a CdTe quantum well. Our method, relying on the
exchange interaction between localized excitons and paramagnetic impurities,
can in principle be applied to entangle a large number of spins.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure
Quasi-periodic spin chains in a magnetic field
We study the interplay between a (quasi) periodic coupling array and an
external magnetic field in a spin-1/2 XXZ chain. A new class of magnetization
plateaux are obtained by means of Abelian bosonization methods which give rise
to a sufficient quantization condition. The investigation of magnetic phase
diagrams via exact diagonalization of finite clusters finds a complete
agreement with the continuum treatment in a variety of situations.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 5 PostScript figures included. Final version to

Quality control and beam test of GEM detectors for future upgrades of the CMS muon high rate region at the LHC
Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) are a proven position sensitive gas detector technology which nowadays is becoming more widely used in High Energy Physics. GEMs offer an excellent spatial resolution and a high particle rate capability, with a close to 100% detection efficiency. In view of the high luminosity phase of the CERN Large Hadron Collider, these aforementioned features make GEMs suitable candidates for the future upgrades of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector. In particular, the CMS GEM Collaboration proposes to cover the high-eta region of the muon system with large-area triple-GEM detectors, which have the ability to provide robust and redundant tracking and triggering functions. In this contribution, after a general introduction and overview of the project, the construction of full-size trapezoidal triple-GEM prototypes will be described in more detail. The procedures for the quality control of the GEM foils, including gain uniformity measurements with an x-ray source will be presented. In the past few years, several CMS triple-GEM prototype detectors were operated with test beams at the CERN SPS. The results of these test beam campaigns will be summarised
Perfect drain for the Maxwell Fish Eye lens.
Perfect imaging of electromagnetic waves using the Maxwell fish eye (MFE) requires a new concept: a point called the perfect drain that we shall call the perfect point drain. From the mathematical point of view, a perfect point drain is just like an ideal point source, except that it drains power from the electromagnetic field instead of generating it. We introduce here the perfect drain for the MFE as a dissipative region of non-zero size that completely drains the power from the point source. To accomplish this goal, the region must have a precise complex permittivity that depends on its size as well as on the frequency. The perfect point drain is obtained when the diameter of the perfect drain tends to zero. This interpretation of the perfect point drain is connected well with common concepts of electromagnetic theory, opening up both modeling in computer simulations and experimental verification of setups containing a perfect point drain
Remarks on the Spectral Properties of Tight Binding and Kronig-Penney Models with Substitution Sequences
We comment on some recent investigations on the electronic properties of
models associated to the Thue-Morse chain and point out that their conclusions
are in contradiction with rigorously proven theorems and indicate some of the
sources of these misinterpretations. We briefly review and explain the current
status of mathematical results in this field and discuss some conjectures and
open problems.Comment: 15,CPT-94/P.3003,tex,
