A new method of measuring the cluster peculiar velocity power spectrum
We propose to use spatial correlations of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (KSZ)
flux as an estimator of the peculiar velocity power spectrum. In contrast with
conventional techniques, our new method does not require measurements of the
thermal SZ signal or the X-ray temperature. Moreover, this method has the
special advantage that the expected systematic errors are always sub-dominant
to statistical errors on all scales and redshifts of interest. We show that
future large sky coverage KSZ surveys may allow a peculiar velocity power

Essential role of CFTR in PKA-dependent phosphorylation, alkalinization, and hyperpolarization during human dperm capacitation
Mammalian sperm require to spend a limited period of time in the female reproductive tract to become competent to fertilize in a process called capacitation. It is well established that HCO3 − is essential for capacitation because it activates the atypical soluble adenylate cyclase ADCY10 leading to cAMP production, and promotes alkalinization of cytoplasm, and membrane hyperpolarization. However, how HCO3 − is transported into the sperm is not well understood. There is evidence that CFTR activity is involved in the human sperm capacitation but how this channel is integrated in the complex signaling cascades associated with this process remains largely unknown. In the present work, we have analyzed the extent to which CFTR regulates different events in human sperm capacitation. We observed that inhibition of CFTR affects HCO3 −-entrance dependent events resulting in lower PKA activity. CFTR inhibition also affected cAMP/PKA-downstream events such as the increase in tyrosine phosphorylation, hyperactivated motility, and acrosome reaction. In addition, we demonstrated for the first time, that CFTR and PKA activity are essential for the regulation of intracellular pH, and membrane potential in human sperm. Addition of permeable cAMP partially recovered all the PKA-dependent events altered in the presence of inh-172 which is consistent with a role of CFTR upstream of PKA activation.Fil: Puga Molina, Lis del Carmen. Increasing dominance of large lianas in Amazonian forests
Ecological orthodoxy suggests that old-growth forests should be close to dynamic equilibrium, but this view has been challenged by recent findings that neotropical forests are accumulating carbon and biomass, possibly in response to the increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide. However, it is unclear whether the recent increase in tree biomass has been accompanied by a shift in community composition. Such changes could reduce or enhance the carbon storage potential of old-growth forests in the long term. Here we show that non-fragmented Amazon forests are experiencing a concerted increase in the density, basal area and mean size of woody climbing plants (lianas). Over the last two decades of the twentieth century the dominance of large lianas relative to trees has increased by 1.7–4.6% a year. Lianas enhance tree mortality and suppress tree growth, so their rapid increase implies that the tropical terrestrial carbon sink may shut down sooner than current models suggest. Predictions of future tropical carbon fluxes will need to account for the changing composition and dynamics of supposedly undisturbed forests
The Type Ia Supernova Rate in Redshift 0.5--0.9 Galaxy Clusters
Supernova (SN) rates are potentially powerful diagnostics of metal enrichment
and SN physics, particularly in galaxy clusters with their deep,
metal-retaining potentials and relatively simple star-formation histories. We
have carried out a survey for supernovae (SNe) in galaxy clusters, at a
redshift range 0.5<z<0.9, using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the
Hubble Space Telescope. We reimaged a sample of 15 clusters that were
previously imaged by ACS, thus obtaining two to three epochs per cluster, in
which we discovered five likely cluster SNe, six possible cluster SNe Ia, two
hostless SN candidates, and several background and foreground events. Keck
spectra of the host galaxies were obtained to establish cluster membership. We
conducted detailed efficiency simulations, and measured the stellar
luminosities of the clusters using Subaru images. We derive a cluster SN rate
of 0.35 SNuB +0.17/-0.12 (statistical) \pm0.13 (classification) \pm0.01
(systematic) [where SNuB = SNe (100 yr 10^10 L_B_sun)^-1] and 0.112 SNuM
+0.055/-0.039 (statistical) \pm0.042 (classification) \pm0.005 (systematic)
[where SNuM = SNe (100 yr 10^10 M_sun)^-1]. As in previous measurements of
cluster SN rates, the uncertainties are dominated by small-number statistics.
The SN rate in this redshift bin is consistent with the SN rate in clusters at
lower redshifts (to within the uncertainties), and shows that there is, at
most, only a slight increase of cluster SN rate with increasing redshift. The
low and fairly constant SN Ia rate out to z~1 implies that the bulk of the iron
mass in clusters was already in place by z~1. The recently observed doubling of
iron abundances in the intracluster medium between z=1 and 0, if real, is
likely the result of redistribution of existing iron, rather than new

OSCE best practice guidelines—applicability for nursing simulations
Background: Objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) have been used for many years within healthcare programmes as a measure of students’ and clinicians’ clinical performance. OSCEs are a form of simulation and are often summative but may be formative. This educational approach requires robust design based on sound pedagogy to assure practice and assessment of holistic nursing care. As part of a project testing seven OSCE best practice guidelines (BPGs) across three sites, the BPGs were applied to an existing simulation activity. The aim of this study was to determine the applicability and value of the OSCE BPGs in an existing formative simulation. Methods: A mixed methods approach was used to address the research question: in what ways do OSCE BPGs align with simulations. The BPGs were aligned and compared with all aspects of an existing simulation activity offered to first-year nursing students at a large city-based university, prior to their first clinical placement in an Australian healthcare setting. Survey questions, comprised of Likert scales and free-text responses, used at other sites were slightly modified for reference to simulation. Students’ opinions about the refined simulation activity were collected via electronic survey immediately following the simulation and from focus groups. Template analysis, using the BPGs as existing or a priori thematic codes, enabled interpretation and illumination of the data from both sources.Results: Few changes were made to the existing simulation plan and format. Students’ responses from surveys (n = 367) and four focus groups indicated that all seven BPGs were applicable for simulations in guiding their learning, particularly in the affective domain, and assisting their perceived needs in preparing for upcoming clinical practice. Discussion: Similarities were found in the intent of simulation and OSCEs informed by the BPGs to enable feedback to students about holistic practice across affective, cognitive and psychomotor domains. The similarities in this study are consistent with findings from exploring the applicability of the BPGs for OSCEs in other nursing education settings, contexts, universities and jurisdictions. The BPGs also aligned with other frameworks and standards often used to develop and deliver simulations. Conclusions: Findings from this study provide further evidence of the applicability of the seven OSCE BPGs to inform the development and delivery of, in this context, simulation activities for nurses. The manner in which simulation is offered to large cohorts requires further consideration to meet students’ needs in rehearsing the registered nurse role
Quark masses and mixings in the RS1 model with a condensing 4th generation
We study the hierarchy of quark masses and mixings in a model based on a
5-dimensional spacetime with constant curvature of Randall-Sundrum type with
two branes, where the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking is caused dynamically by
the condensation of a 4th generation of quarks, due to underlying physics from
the 5D bulk and the first KK gluons. We first study the hierarchy of quark
masses and mixings that can be obtained from purely adjusting the profile
localizations, finding that realistic masses are not reproduced unless non
trivial hierarchies of underlying 4-fermion interactions from the bulk are
included. Then we study global U(1) symmetries that can be imposed in order to
obtain non-symmetric modified Fritzsch-like textures in the mass matrices that
reproduce reasonably well quark masses and CKM mixings.Comment: Minor changes. Version accepted for publication in JHE
The stellar and sub-stellar IMF of simple and composite populations
The current knowledge on the stellar IMF is documented. It appears to become
top-heavy when the star-formation rate density surpasses about 0.1Msun/(yr
pc^3) on a pc scale and it may become increasingly bottom-heavy with increasing
metallicity and in increasingly massive early-type galaxies. It declines quite
steeply below about 0.07Msun with brown dwarfs (BDs) and very low mass stars
having their own IMF. The most massive star of mass mmax formed in an embedded
cluster with stellar mass Mecl correlates strongly with Mecl being a result of
gravitation-driven but resource-limited growth and fragmentation induced
starvation. There is no convincing evidence whatsoever that massive stars do
form in isolation. Various methods of discretising a stellar population are
introduced: optimal sampling leads to a mass distribution that perfectly
represents the exact form of the desired IMF and the mmax-to-Mecl relation,
while random sampling results in statistical variations of the shape of the
IMF. The observed mmax-to-Mecl correlation and the small spread of IMF
power-law indices together suggest that optimally sampling the IMF may be the
more realistic description of star formation than random sampling from a
universal IMF with a constant upper mass limit. Composite populations on galaxy
scales, which are formed from many pc scale star formation events, need to be
described by the integrated galactic IMF. This IGIMF varies systematically from
top-light to top-heavy in dependence of galaxy type and star formation rate,
