Background: Motivated employees are the most valuable resource of the organization. Thus, considering their needs and satisfaction is important. Organizational justice, due to its significant impacts on the organizational and individual work outcomes, employees’ attitudes and behaviors like job satisfaction, is of a great importance. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between organizational justice perception and job satisfaction among employees of Kerman University of Medical Sciences. Methods: The target population of this study was headquartering employees of Kerman University of Medical Sciences, among whom 285 ones were selected. For the assessment of distributive justice Niehoff and Moorman questionnaire, for procedural and interactional justice Moorman questionnaire and for job satisfaction JSS (Job Satisfaction Survey) questionnaire were used. Results: All three dimensions of organizational justice including distributive, procedural and interactional justice had a significant relationship with job satisfaction. But among the three dimensions of organizational justice, only distributive and interactional justice could predict job satisfaction. Also, organizational justice and job satisfaction of employees were not significantly different based on sex, age group, job tenure, employment status, and education. Conclusion: Since organizational justice and its dimensions have a significant relationship with job satisfaction and organizational justice can predict job satisfaction, managers should pay attention to organizational justice which leads to enhanced job satisfaction. Keywords: Organizational justice, Distributive justice, Procedural justice, Interactional justice, Job satisfactio

Miniaturised wearable UHF-RFID tag with tuning capability

    Get PDF
By carving a 'square-smile'slot profile over a folded patch, a miniaturised UHF-RFID tag is obtained, having a convenient two-step tuning mechanism (coarse and fine). This is useful to adapt the same tag to European and US frequencies and to make on-site corrections. The antenna is half the size of a credit card and can be read up to 5m when attached onto the body. The flexible and lightweight EPDM foam substrate makes the tag suited to be integrated in badges, wallets, pockets, plasters, wristbands and various garments

The effect of metformin on biomarkers associated with breast cancer outcomes: a systematic review, meta-analysis, and dose–response of randomized clinical trials

Purpose: Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality in developed countries. We performed a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials to investigate the effect of metformin on biomarkers associated with breast cancer outcomes and to explore the dose–response relationship. Methods: A systematic search was performed from onset of the database to January 2019 in MEDLINE/PubMed, SCOPUS, and Cochrane library to identify randomized clinical trials investigating the impact of metformin on insulin, glucose, CRP, leptin, body mass indices (BMI), cholesterol, Ki-67, and Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin-Resistance (HOMA-IR). Effect sizes were expressed as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using a random-effects models. Results: Nine studies providing 1,363 participants were included in the meta-analysis. Pooled results showed a significant reduction in insulin (WMD: − 0.99 U/ml, 95% CI − 1.66, − 0.33), glucose (WMD: − 1.78 ml/dl, 95% CI − 2.96, − 0.60), CRP (WMD: − 0.60 mg/l, 95% CI − 0.88, − 0.33), HOMA-IR (WMD: − 0.45, 95% CI − 0.77, − 0.11), leptin (WMD: − 2.44 ng/ml, 95% CI − 3.28, − 1.61), BMI (WMD: − 0.55 kg/m 2 , 95% CI − 1.00, − 0.11), and Ki-67 (WMD: − 4.06, 95% CI − 7.59, − 0.54). Results of the subgroup analyses showed that insulin, glucose, and BMI decreased more significantly when the duration of administering metformin intervention was above 4 weeks. We did not observe non-linear changes in the dose–response relationship between metformin and biomarkers as outcomes. Conclusions: Breast cancer patients receiving metformin as treatment for diabetes showed significant reduction in levels of insulin, fasting glucose, CRP, HOMA, leptin, BMI, and Ki-67. </p

Effects of Polyphenols on Oxidative Stress-Mediated Injury in Cardiomyocytes

    Get PDF
Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of mortality and morbidity in the world. Hypertension, ischemia/reperfusion, diabetes and anti-cancer drugs contribute to heart failure through oxidative and nitrosative stresses which cause cardiomyocytes nuclear and mitochondrial DNA damage, denaturation of intracellular proteins, lipid peroxidation and inflammation. Oxidative or nitrosative stress-mediated injury lead to cardiomyocytes apoptosis or necrosis. The reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen species (RNS) concentration is dependent on their production and on the expression and activity of anti-oxidant enzymes. Polyphenols are a large group of natural compounds ubiquitously expressed in plants, and epidemiological studies have shown associations between a diet rich in polyphenols and the prevention of various ROS-mediated human diseases. Polyphenols reduce cardiomyocytes damage, necrosis, apoptosis, infarct size and improve cardiac function by decreasing oxidative stress-induced production of ROS or RNS. These effects are achieved by the ability of polyphenols to modulate the expression and activity of anti-oxidant enzymes and several signaling pathways involved in cells survival. This report reviews current knowledge on the potential anti-oxidative effects of polyphenols to control the cardiotoxicity induced by ROS and RNS stress

Tattoo Antenna Temporary Transfers Operating On-Skin (TATTOOS)

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the development of RFID logo antennas based on the logos of Loughborough University and the University of Kent which can be tattooed directly onto the skin’s surface. Hence, this paper uses aesthetic principles to create functional wearable technology. Simulations of possible designs for the tattoo tags have been carried out to optimize their performance. Prototypes of the tag designs were fabricated and read range measurements with the transfer tattoos on a volunteers arm were carried out to test the performance. Measured Read ranges of approximately 0.5 m have been achieved with the antenna 10 µm from the body

Violacein, an indole-derived purple-colored natural pigment produced by Janthinobacterium lividum, inhibits the growth of head and neck carcinoma cell lines both in vitro and in vivo

    Get PDF
Violacein (VIO; 3-[1,2-dihydro-5-(5-hydroxy-1H-indol-3-yl)-2-oxo-3H-pyrrol-3-ylidene]-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one), an indole-derived purple-colored pigment, produced by a limited number of Gram-negative bacteria species, including Chromobacterium violaceum and Janthinobacterium lividum, has been demonstrated to have anti-cancer activity, as it interferes with survival transduction signaling pathways in different cancer models. Head and neck carcinoma (HNC) represents the sixth most common and one of the most fatal cancers worldwide. We determined whether VIO was able to inhibit head and neck cancer cell growth both in vitro and in vivo. We provide evidence that VIO treatment of human and mouse head and neck cancer cell lines inhibits cell growth and induces autophagy and apoptosis. In fact, VIO treatment increased PARP-1 cleavage, the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, the inhibition of ERK1 and ERK2 phosphorylation, and the expression of light chain 3-II (LC3-II). Moreover, VIO was able to induce p53 degradation, cytoplasmic nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) accumulation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. VIO induced a significant increase in ROS production. VIO administration was safe in BALB/c mice and reduced the growth of transplanted salivary gland cancer cells (SALTO) in vivo and prolonged median survival. Taken together, our results indicate that the treatment of head and neck cancer cells with VIO can be useful in inhibiting in vivo and in vitro cancer cell growth. VIO may represent a suitable tool for the local treatment of HNC in combination with standard therapies
