On-shell Recursion in String Theory
We prove that all open string theory disc amplitudes in a flat background
obey Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW) on-shell recursion relations, up to a
possible reality condition on a kinematic invariant. Arguments that the same
holds for tree level closed string amplitudes are given as well. Non-adjacent
BCFW-shifts are related to adjacent shifts through monodromy relations for
which we provide a novel CFT based derivation. All possible recursion relations
are related by old-fashioned string duality. The field theory limit of the
analysis for amplitudes involving gluons is explicitly shown to be smooth for
both the bosonic string as well as the superstring. In addition to a proof a
less rigorous but more powerful argument based on the underlying CFT is
presented which suggests that the technique may extend to a much more general
setting in string theory. This is illustrated by a discussion of the open
string in a constant B-field background and the closed string on the level of

Immunomodulatory peptides—A promising source for novel functional food production and drug discovery
Immunomodulatory peptides are a complex class of bioactive peptides that encompasses substances with different mechanisms of action. Immunomodulatory peptides could also be used in vaccines as adjuvants which would be extremely desirable, especially in response to pandemics. Thus, immunomodulatory peptides in food of plant origin could be regarded both as valuable suplements of novel functional food preparation and/or as precursors or possible active ingredients for drugs design for treatment variety of conditions arising from impaired function of immune system. Given variety of mechanisms, different tests are required to assess effects of immunomodulatory peptides. Some of those effects show good correlation with in vivo results but others, less so. Certain plant peptides, such as defensins, show both immunomodulatory and antimicrobial effect, which makes them interesting candidates for preparation of functional food and feed, as well as templates for design of synthetic peptides
The generalized cusp in ABJ(M) N = 6 Super Chern-Simons theories
We construct a generalized cusped Wilson loop operator in N = 6 super
Chern-Simons-matter theories which is locally invariant under half of the
supercharges. It depends on two parameters and interpolates smoothly between
the 1/2 BPS line or circle and a pair of antiparallel lines, representing a
natural generalization of the quark-antiquark potential in ABJ(M) theories. For
particular choices of the parameters we obtain 1/6 BPS configurations that,
mapped on S^2 by a conformal transformation, realize a three-dimensional
analogue of the wedge DGRT Wilson loop of N = 4. The cusp couples, in addition
to the gauge and scalar fields of the theory, also to the fermions in the
bifundamental representation of the U(N)xU(M) gauge group and its expectation
value is expressed as the holonomy of a suitable superconnection. We discuss
the definition of these observables in terms of traces and the role of the
boundary conditions of fermions along the loop. We perform a complete two-loop
analysis, obtaining an explicit result for the generalized cusp at the second
non-trivial order, from which we read off the interaction potential between
heavy 1/2 BPS particles in the ABJ(M) model. Our results open the possibility
to explore in the three-dimensional case the connection between localization

Automated microfluidic sample-preparation platform for high-throughput structural investigation of proteins by small-angle X-ray scattering
Proteins and metabolites as indicators of flours quality and nutritional properties of two durum wheat varieties grown in different Italian locations
Durum wheat is an important food source in Mediterranean countries, and Italy is the major producer of durum wheat in Europe. The quality of durum wheat flours depends on the type and amount of gluten proteins and starch while flour nutritional value rests on metabolite contents such as polyphenols. In this work, two Italian cultivars, Iride and Svevo, were analyzed for two years (2016–2017) in four Italian regions to explore how the environment affects: (i) reserve proteome; (ii) starch content and composition; and (iii) free, conjugated, bound phenolics and antioxidant capacity. The impact of environmental and meteorological conditions was significant for many traits. Regardless of the cultivation site, in 2017, a year with less rainfall and a higher temperature during grain filling, there was an increase in low molecular weight glutenins, in the glutenin/gliadin ratio and in the A–type starch granules size, all parameters of higher technological quality. In the same year, the cultivars showed higher amounts of polyphenols and antioxidant capacity. In conclusion, the two wheat cultivars, selected for their medium to high yield and their good quality, had higher performances in 2017 regardless of their sowing locations
Generalized cusp in AdS_4 x CP^3 and more one-loop results from semiclassical strings
We evaluate the exact one-loop partition function for fundamental strings
whose world-surface ends on a cusp at the boundary of AdS_4 and has a "jump" in
CP^3. This allows us to extract the stringy prediction for the ABJM generalized
cusp anomalous dimension Gamma_{cusp}^{ABJM} (phi,theta) up to NLO in
sigma-model perturbation theory. With a similar analysis, we present the exact
partition functions for folded closed string solutions moving in the AdS_3
parts of AdS_4 x CP^3 and AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1 backgrounds. Results are
obtained applying to the string solutions relevant for the AdS_4/CFT_3 and
AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence the tools previously developed for their AdS_5 x S^5

Design of a Highly Portable Data Logging Embedded System for Naturalistic Motorcycle Study
According to Motorcycle Industrial Council (MIC), in USA the number of owned
motorcycle increased during last few years and most likely will keep increasing. However, the
number of the deadly crash accidents associated with motorcycles is on the rise. Although MIC
doesn\u27t explain why the accident rate has increased, the unprotected motorcyclist gear can be one
of the reasons. The most recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
annual report stated that its data analyses are based on their experiences and the best judgment is
not based on solid scientific experiment [3]. Thus, building a framework for the data acquisition
about the motorcyclist environment is a first step towards decreasing motorcyclist crashes.
There are a few naturalistic motorcycle studies reported in the literature. The naturalistic
motorcycle study also identifies the behaviors and environmental crash hazards. The primary
objective of this thesis work is to design a highly portable data logging embedded system for
naturalistic motorcycle study with capability of collecting many types of data such as images,
speed, acceleration, time, location, distance approximation, etc. This thesis work is the first
phase (of three phases) of a naturalistic motorcycle study project. The second phase is to
optimize system area, form factor, and power consumption. The third phase will be concerned
with aggressive low power design and energy harvesting. The proposed embedded system design
is based on an Arduino microcontroller. A whole suite of Arduino based prototype boards,
sensor boards, support software, and user forum is available. The system is high portable with
capability to store up to eight (8) hours of text/image data during a one month study period. We
have successfully designed and implemented the system and performed three trial runs. The data
acquired has been validated and found to be accurate
A Metagenomic and Gene Expression Analysis in Wheat (T. durum) and Maize (Z. mays) Biofertilized with PGPM and Biochar
Commodity crops, such as wheat and maize, are extremely dependent on chemical fertilizers, a practice contributing greatly to the increase in the contaminants in soil and water. Promising solutions are biofertilizers, i.e., microbial biostimulants that when supplemented with soil stimulate plant growth and production. Moreover, the biofertilizers can be fortified when (i) provided as multifunctional consortia and (ii) combined with biochar with a high cargo capacity. The aim of this work was to determine the molecular effects on the soil microbiome of different biofertilizers and delivery systems, highlight their physiological effects and merge the data with statistical analyses. The measurements of the physiological parameters (i.e., shoot and root biomass), transcriptomic response of genes involved in essential pathways, and characterization of the rhizosphere population were analyzed. The results demonstrated that wheat and maize supplemented with different combinations of selected microbial consortia and biochar have a positive effect on plant growth in terms of shoot and root biomass; the treatments also had a beneficial influence on the biodiversity of the indigenous rhizo-microbial community, reinforcing the connection between microbes and plants without further spreading contaminants. Distinct Mechanisms for Induction and Tolerance Regulate the Immediate Early Genes Encoding Interleukin 1β and Tumor Necrosis Factor α
Interleukin-1β and Tumor Necrosis Factor α play related, but distinct, roles in immunity and disease. Our study revealed major mechanistic distinctions in the Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling-dependent induction for the rapidly expressed genes (IL1B and TNF) coding for these two cytokines. Prior to induction, TNF exhibited pre-bound TATA Binding Protein (TBP) and paused RNA Polymerase II (Pol II), hallmarks of poised immediate-early (IE) genes. In contrast, unstimulated IL1B displayed very low levels of both TBP and paused Pol II, requiring the lineage-specific Spi-1/PU.1 (Spi1) transcription factor as an anchor for induction-dependent interaction with two TLR-activated transcription factors, C/EBPβ and NF-κB. Activation and DNA binding of these two pre-expressed factors resulted in de novo recruitment of TBP and Pol II to IL1B in concert with a permissive state for elongation mediated by the recruitment of elongation factor P-TEFb. This Spi1-dependent mechanism for IL1B transcription, which is unique for a rapidly-induced/poised IE gene, was more dependent upon P-TEFb than was the case for the TNF gene. Furthermore, the dependence on phosphoinositide 3-kinase for P-TEFb recruitment to IL1B paralleled a greater sensitivity to the metabolic state of the cell and a lower sensitivity to the phenomenon of endotoxin tolerance than was evident for TNF. Such differences in induction mechanisms argue against the prevailing paradigm that all IE genes possess paused Pol II and may further delineate the specific roles played by each of these rapidly expressed immune modulators. © 2013 Adamik et al
