Preliminary study of antimicrobial action of essential oils on etiological agents of mastitis in shee
The control of mastitis is currently reliant on antibiotic utilization. Nevertheless antibiotics overuse and use without
criteria leads to the development of resistant strains with negative consequences both in animal and public health.
Essential oils (EOs) are classified as GRAS (generally recognized as safe), are provided with antimicrobial
properties and no resistance has been reported after use.

Feohifomicosis Producida por Alternaria Infectoria con Presentación Clínica de Múltiples Lesiones Vegetantes en un Paciente Sometido a un Trasplante Renal
The genus Alternaria is one of the most common black moulds and appears to be increasing as a causative agent of subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis, particularly among immunosuppressed patients. A 53-year-old patient who had received a kidney transplant presented with multiple verrucous lesions on the distal extremities. Positive histopathology and cultures, in addition to rDNA ITS region sequencing, identified the fungal isolate as Alternaria infectoria. Oral itraconazole was administered for 10 months. A follow-up at 15 months demonstrated no signs of infection. Clinical manifestations of cutaneous alternariosis vary significantly and only a few cases have been described in the literature. Although optimal treatment options remain controversial, this case of phaeohyphomycosis was successfully treated with itraconazole monotherapy
Trends and Determinants of Full Immunisation among Children Aged 12–23 Months: Analysis of Pooled Data from Mozambican Household Surveys between 1997 and 2015
The 1974 Expanded Program on Immunisation has saved millions of children worldwide by promoting full immunisation coverage (FIC). However, forty years later, many sub-Saharan African countries remain well below its target of 90% FIC. This study analysed the level, trends and determinants of FIC in 4322 Mozambican children aged 12–23 months from pooled data from four national surveys between 1997 and 2015. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression models were performed to analyse the factors associated with full immunisation coverage. Overall, the coverage of fully immunised children increased from 47.9% in 1997 to 66.5% in 2015, corresponding to a 1.8% yearly increase. The needed FIC growth rate post-2015 was 4.3 times higher. Increased maternal education and a higher household wealth index were associated with higher odds of FIS. Furthermore, attending antenatal care (ANC) visits, institutional delivery and living in southern provinces were also associated with increased odds of FIS. Between 1997 and 2015, FIC among 12–23-month-old children made modest annual gains but remained well below international targets. Factors related to access to healthcare, educational level, socioeconomic status and geographical location were associated with improved FIC. Targeted interventions to expand these factors will improve immunisation coverage among Mozambican children.publishersversionpublishe
Direct and Inverse Variational Problems on Time Scales: A Survey
We deal with direct and inverse problems of the calculus of variations on
arbitrary time scales. Firstly, using the Euler-Lagrange equation and the
strengthened Legendre condition, we give a general form for a variational
functional to attain a local minimum at a given point of the vector space.
Furthermore, we provide a necessary condition for a dynamic
integro-differential equation to be an Euler-Lagrange equation (Helmholtz's
problem of the calculus of variations on time scales). New and interesting
results for the discrete and quantum settings are obtained as particular cases.
Finally, we consider very general problems of the calculus of variations given
by the composition of a certain scalar function with delta and nabla integrals

Liposomes in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
Liposomes are vesicular structures made of lipids that are formed in aqueous solutions. Structurally, they resemble the lipid membrane of living cells. Therefore, they have been widely investigated, since the 1960s, as models to study the cell membrane, and as carriers for protection and/or delivery of bioactive agents. They have been used in different areas of research including vaccines, imaging, applications in cosmetics and tissue engineering. Tissue engineering is defined as a strategy for promoting the regeneration of tissues for the human body. This strategy may involve the coordinated application of defined cell types with structured biomaterial scaffolds to produce living structures. To create a new tissue, based on this strategy, a controlled stimulation of cultured cells is needed, through a systematic combination of bioactive agents and mechanical signals. Change and Aging Senescence as an adaptation
Understanding why we age is a long-lived open problem in evolutionary
biology. Aging is prejudicial to the individual and evolutionary forces should
prevent it, but many species show signs of senescence as individuals age. Here,
I will propose a model for aging based on assumptions that are compatible with
evolutionary theory: i) competition is between individuals; ii) there is some
degree of locality, so quite often competition will between parents and their
progeny; iii) optimal conditions are not stationary, mutation helps each
species to keep competitive. When conditions change, a senescent species can
drive immortal competitors to extinction. This counter-intuitive result arises
from the pruning caused by the death of elder individuals. When there is change
and mutation, each generation is slightly better adapted to the new conditions,
but some older individuals survive by random chance. Senescence can eliminate
those from the genetic pool. Even though individual selection forces always win
over group selection ones, it is not exactly the individual that is selected,
but its lineage. While senescence damages the individuals and has an
evolutionary cost, it has a benefit of its own. It allows each lineage to adapt
faster to changing conditions. We age because the world changes.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
Supernovae from rotating stars
The present paper discusses the main physical effects produced by stellar
rotation on presupernovae, as well as observations which confirm these effects
and their consequences for presupernova models. Rotation critically influences
the mass of the exploding cores, the mass and chemical composition of the
envelopes and the types of supernovae, as well as the properties of the
remnants and the chemical yields. In the formation of gamma-ray bursts,
rotation and the properties of rotating stars appear as the key factor. In
binaries, the interaction between axial rotation and tidal effects often leads
to interesting and unexpected results. Rotation plays a key role in shaping the
evolution and nucleosynthesis in massive stars with very low metallicities
(metallicity below about the Small Magellanic Cloud metallicity down to
Population III stars). At solar and higher metallicities, the effects of
rotation compete with those of stellar winds. In close binaries, the
synchronisation process can lock the star at a high rotation rate despite
strong mass loss and thus both effects, rotation and stellar winds, have a
strong impact. In conclusion, rotation is a key physical ingredient of the
stellar models and of presupernova stages, and the evolution both of single
stars and close binaries. Moreover, important effects are expected along the

Findings from the Portuguese National Health Survey 2014
Vaccination is an effective strategy to prevent tetanus, and in Portugal this service is provided free of charge. Despite this, immigrants reported lower tetanus vaccination coverage than did Portuguese natives. The objective of this study was to identify sociodemographic, migration-related, and access-to-care factors associated with tetanus vaccination coverage among adult immigrants, using data from the Portuguese National Health Survey 2014. For the sample of 1277 immigrants aged ≥18 years, we estimated self-reported tetanus vaccination within the preceding 10 years and its determinants using complex samples logistic regression. The overall self-reported tetanus vaccination coverage was 79.5% (95% CI: 75.8-82.8). Age (adjusted odd ratio (aOR) per 1 year age increase = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.95-0.99), higher household income per adult (aOR = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.19-0.96), having Portuguese citizenship (aOR = 2.30, 95% CI: 1.25-4.24), having private health insurance (aOR = 1.99, 95% CI: 1.06-3.71), and contact with family/general physician in the last 12 months (aOR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.01-2.51) were associated with self-reported tetanus vaccination coverage among adult immigrants. We also found significant disparities in coverage between regions of residence. This study identified several determinants associated with self-reported tetanus vaccination coverage among adult immigrants in Portugal. These findings may help policymakers to design specific interventions to increase tetanus vaccination coverage among this population.publishersversionpublishe
Genetic diversity of Brazilian isolates of feline immunodeficiency virus
We isolated Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) from three adult domestic cats, originating from two open shelters in Brazil. Viruses were isolated from PBMC following co-cultivation with the feline T-lymphoblastoid cell line MYA-1. All amplified env gene products were cloned directly into pGL8MYA. The nucleic acid sequences of seven clones were determined and then compared with those of previously described isolates. The sequences of all of the Brazilian virus clones were distinct and phylogenetic analysis revealed that all belong to subtype B. Three variants isolated from one cat and two variants were isolated from each of the two other cats, indicating that intrahost diversity has the potential to pose problems for the treatment and diagnosis of FIV infection
