The complex radio and X-ray structure in the nuclear regions of the active galaxy NGC1365
We present a multiwavelength analysis of the prominent active galaxy NGC1365,
in particular looking at the radio and X-ray properties of the central regions
of the galaxy.
We analyse ROSAT observations of NGC1365, and discuss recent ASCA results. In
addition to a number of point sources in the vicinity of NGC1365, we find a
region of X-ray emission extending along the central bar of the galaxy,
combined with an emission peak near the centre of the galaxy. This X-ray
emission is centred on the optical/radio nucleus, but is spatially extended.
The X-ray spectrum can be well fitted by a thermal plasma model, with
kT=0.6-0.8keV and a low local absorbing column. The thermal spectrum is
suggestive of starburst emission rather than emission from a central
black-hole.
The ATCA radio observations show a number of hotspots, located in a ring
around a weak radio nucleus. Synchrotron emission from electrons accelerated by
supernovae and supernova remnants (SNRs) is the likely origin of these
hotspots. The radio nucleus has a steep spectrum, indicative perhaps of an AGN
or SNRs. The evidence for a jet emanating from the nucleus is at best marginal.
The extent of the radio ring is comparable to the extended central X-ray

Heat exchanger/reactors (HEX reactors): Concepts, technologies: State-of-the-art
Process intensification is a chemical engineering field which has truly emerged in the past few years and is currently rapidly growing. It consists in looking for safer operating conditions, lower waste in terms of costs and energy and higher productivity; and away to reach such objectives is to develop multifunctional devices such as heat exchanger/reactors for instance. This review is focused on the latter and makes a point on heat exchanger/reactors. After a brief presentation of requirements due to transposition from batch to continuous apparatuses, heat exchangers/reactors at industrial or pilot scales and their applications are described
Extremely red galaxies: dust attenuation and classification
We re-address the classification criterion for extremely red galaxies (ERGs)
of Pozzetti and Mannucci (2000 -- PM00), which aims to separate, in the Ic-K
(or Rc-K) vs. J-K colour--colour diagram, passively evolving, old (> 1 Gyr)
stellar populations in a dust-free environment, associated with ellipticals
(Es), from dusty starburst galaxies (DSGs), both at 1 < z < 2. We explore a
category of objects not considered previously, i.e., galaxies forming in this
redshift range on short (0.1 Gyr) timescales and observed also in their early,
dusty post-starburst phase. We also investigate the impact of structure of the
dusty medium and dust amount on the observed optical/near-IR colours of high-z
DSGs/DPSGs, through multiple-scattering radiative transfer calculations for a
dust/stars configuration and an extinction function calibrated with nearby
dusty starbursts. As a main result, we find that dusty post-starburst galaxies
(DPSGs), with ages between 0.2 and 1 Gyr, at 1.3 < z < 2 mix with Es at 1 < z <
2 for a large range in dust amount. This ``intrusion'' is a source of concern
for the present two-colour classification of ERGs. On the other hand, we
confirm, in agreement with PM00, that DSGs are well separated from Es, both at
1 < z < 2, in the Ic-K vs. J-K colour--colour diagram, whatever the structure
(two-phase clumpy or homogeneous) of their dusty medium and their dust amount
are. This result holds under the new hypothesis of high-z Es being as dusty as
nearby ones. Thus the interpretation of the optical/near-IR colours of high-z
Es may suffer from a multiple degeneracy among age, metallicity, dust and
redshift. We also find that DPSGs at z around 1 mix with DSGs at 1 < z < 2, as
a function of dust amount and structure of the dusty medium. All these results

Stellar Evolutionary Effects on the Abundances of PAH and SN-Condensed Dust in Galaxies
Spectral and photometric observations of nearby galaxies show a correlation
between the strength of their mid-IR aromatic features, attributed to PAH
molecules, and their metal abundance, leading to a deficiency of these features
in low-metallicity galaxies. In this paper, we suggest that the observed
correlation represents a trend of PAH abundance with galactic age, reflecting
the delayed injection of carbon dust into the ISM by AGB stars in the final
post-AGB phase of their evolution. AGB stars are the primary sources of PAHs
and carbon dust in galaxies, and recycle their ejecta back to the interstellar
medium only after a few hundred million years of evolution on the main
sequence. In contrast, more massive stars that explode as Type II supernovae
inject their metals and dust almost instantaneously after their formation. We
first determined the PAH abundance in galaxies by constructing detailed models
of UV-to-radio SED of galaxies that estimate the contribution of dust in
PAH-free HII regions, and PAHs and dust from photodissociation regions, to the
IR emission. All model components: the galaxies' stellar content, properties of
their HII regions, and their ionizing and non-ionizing radiation fields and
dust abundances, are constrained by their observed multiwavelength spectrum.
After determining the PAH and dust abundances in 35 nearby galaxies using our
SED model, we use a chemical evolution model to show that the delayed injection
of carbon dust by AGB stars provides a natural explanation to the dependence of
the PAH content in galaxies with metallicity. We also show that larger dust
particles giving rise to the far-IR emission follow a distinct evolutionary
trend closely related to the injection of dust by massive stars into the ISM.Comment: ApJ, 69 pages, 46 figures, Accepte
Potencial hidrogeniônico de antimicrobianos, segundo os fatores ambientais temperatura e luminosidade
The objective of this experimental study was to measure the pH of antibiotics administered by intravenous infusion - ceftriaxone sodium, vancomycin hydrochloride, metrodinazole, penicillin G potassium and amikacin sulfate - after reconstitution with sterile water and dilution with NaCl 0.9% or dextrose 5% in water, according to temperature and luminosity of the environment. The results showed that variation in the drugs' pH was less than 1.0 value and that some antibiotics remained acidic after dilution and maintained this chemical profile in all situations studied, suggesting that the studied environmental factors did not change the solutions' acid base characteristic. Some pH values measured characterize risk for the development of chemical phlebitis and infiltration, and it is important for clinical practice to emphasize the profile of intravenous solutions of antibiotics, considering method of dilution, and time to infusion.El objetivo de este estudio experimental fue medir el pH de los antibióticos de administración intravenosa ceftriaxona sódica, clorhidrato de vancomicina, metronidazol, penicilina G potásica y sulfato de amikacina, después de reconstitución con agua destilada y dilución con NaCl a 0,9%, o suero glucosado a 5%, considerando la influencia de la temperatura y luminosidad ambientales, así como el tiempo de exposición, en el comportamiento químico de esos fármacos. Los resultados demostraron variaciones que no ultrapasaron 1,0 (valor de pH) y que algunos antimicrobianos, eminentemente ácidos después de la dilución, mantuvieron ese comportamiento en todas las situaciones estudiadas, no sugiriendo la influencia de factores ambientales en el comportamiento químico de las soluciones. The 2-C-methylerythritol 4-phosphate pathway in melon is regulated by specialized isoforms for the first and last steps
The 2-C-methyl-d-erythritol-4-phosphate (MEP) pathway provides the precursors for the biosynthesis of plastidial isoprenoids, which include the carotenoid pigments of many fruits. We have analysed the genes encoding the seven enzymes of the MEP pathway in melon (Cucumis melo L.) and determined that the first one, 1-deoxyxylulose 5-phosphate synthase (DXS), and the last one, 1-hydroxy-2-methyl-2-(E)-butenyl 4-diphosphate reductase (HDR), are represented in the genome as a small gene family and paralogous pair, respectively. In the case of DXS, three genes encode functional DXS activities which fall into previously established type I (CmDXS1) and II (CmDXS2a and CmDXS2b) categories, while a fourth DXS-like gene belonging to the type III group did not encode a protein with DXS activity. Their expression patterns and phylogenies suggest that CmDXS1 is functionally specialized for developmental and photosynthetic processes, while CmDXS2a and CmDXS2b are induced in flowers and ripening fruit of orange- (but not white-) fleshed varieties, coinciding with β-carotene accumulation. This is the first instance connecting type II DXS genes to specialized isoprenoid biosynthesis in the fruit of an agronomically important species. Two HDR paralogues were shown to encode functional enzymes, although only CmHDR1 was highly expressed in the tissues and developmental stages tested. Phylogenetic analysis showed that in cucurbits such as melon, these HDR paralogues probably arose through individual gene duplications in a common angiosperm ancestor, mimicking a prior division in gymnosperms, while other flowering plants, including apple, soy, canola, and poplar, acquired HDR duplicates recently as homoeologues through large-scale genome duplications. Climate Policy Under Fat-Tailed Risk: An Application of Dice
Uncertainty plays a significant role in evaluating climate policy, and fat-tailed uncertainty may dominate policy advice. Should we make our utmost effort to prevent the arbitrarily large impacts of climate change under deep uncertainty? In order to answer to this question, we propose a new way of investigating the impact of (fat-tailed) uncertainty on optimal climate policy: the curvature of the optimal carbon tax against the uncertainty. We find that the optimal carbon tax increases as the uncertainty about climate sensitivity increases, but it does not accelerate as implied by Weitzman's Dismal Theorem. We find the same result in a wide variety of sensitivity analyses. These results emphasize the importance of balancing the costs of climate change against its benefits, also under deep uncertainty. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht
The effects of alcohol on plasma lipid mediators of inflammation resolution in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus
Background
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is characterized by peripheral insulin resistance and low-grade systemic inflammation. Inflammation resolution is recognised as an important process driven by specialised pro-resolving mediators of inflammation (SPMs) and has the potential to moderate chronic inflammation. Alcohol has the potential to affect synthesis of SPMs by altering key enzymes involved in SPM synthesis and may influence ongoing inflammation associated with Type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Aims
(i) To examine the effects of alcohol consumed as red wine on plasma SPM in men and women with Type 2 diabetes in a randomised controlled trial and (ii) compare baseline plasma SPM levels in the same patients with those of healthy volunteers.
Methods
Twenty-four patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus were randomized to a three-period crossover study with men drinking red wine 300 ml/day (∼31 g alcohol/day) and women drinking red wine 230 ml/day (∼24 g alcohol/day), or equivalent volumes of dealcoholized red wine (DRW) or water, each for 4 weeks. The SPM 18-hydroxyeicosapentaenoic acid (18-HEPE), E-series resolvins (Rv) (RvE1-RvE3), 17-hydroxydocosahexaenoic acid (17-HDHA), and D-series resolvins (RvD1, 17R-RvD1, RvD2, RvD5), 14-hydroxydocosahexaenoic acid (14-HDHA) and Maresin 1 were measured at the end of each period. A baseline comparison of plasma SPM, hs CRP, lipids and glucose was made with healthy volunteers.
Results
Red wine did not differentially affect any of the SPM measured when compared with DRW or water. Baseline levels of the hs-CRP and the SPM 18-HEPE, 17-HDHA, RvD1 and 17R-RvD1 in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus were all significantly elevated compared with healthy controls and remained so after adjusting for age and gender.
Conclusion
Moderate alcohol consumption as red wine does not alter plasma SPM in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The elevation of SPM levels compared with healthy volunteers may be a homeostatic response to counter ongoing inflammation
The trophic importance of epiphytic algae in a freshwater macrophyte system (Potamogeton perfoliatus L.): stable isotope and fatty acid analyses
Stable isotope and fatty acid analyses were used to study carbon sources for animals in a submerged plant bed. Epiphytes growing on Potamogeton perfoliatus, sand microflora, and alder leaves were the most important carbon sources. The most abundant macrophyte, P. perfoliatus was unimportant as a food source. Modelling (IsoSource) showed that epiphytes were the most important food source for the most abundant benthic invertebrates, the isopod Asellus aquaticus (annual mean contribution 64%), the amphipod Gammarus pulex (66%), and the gastropod Potamopyrgus antipodarum (83%). The mean annual contributions of sand microflora were, respectively, 21, 19, and 9%; and of alder leaves, 15, 15, and 8% for these three species. The relative importance of carbon sources varied seasonally. The relative contribution of epiphytes was lowest for all three grazer species in July: A. aquaticus 38%, G. pulex 43%, and P. antipodarum 42%. A decline in epiphyte biomass in summer may have caused this switch to less attractive food sources. P. perfoliatus provided habitat and shelter for consumers, but food was mainly supplied indirectly by providing space for attached epiphytes, which are fast-growing and provide a highly nutritious food source
Genetic dissection of climacteric fruit ripening in a melon population segregating for ripening behavior
Melon is as an alternative model to understand fruit ripening due to the coexistence of climacteric and non-climacteric varieties within the same species, allowing the study of the processes that regulate this complex trait with genetic approaches. We phenotyped a population of recombinant inbred lines (RILs), obtained by crossing a climacteric (Védrantais, cantalupensis type) and a non-climcteric variety (Piel de Sapo T111, inodorus type), for traits related to climacteric maturation and ethylene production. Individuals in the RIL population exhibited various combinations of phenotypes that differed in the amount of ethylene produced, the early onset of ethylene production, and other phenotypes associated with ripening. We characterized a major QTL on chromosome 8, ETHQV8.1, which is sufficient to activate climacteric ripening, and other minor QTLs that may modulate the climacteric response. The ETHQV8.1
allele was validated by using two reciprocal introgression line populations generated by crossing Védrantais and Piel
de Sapo and analyzing the ETHQV8.1 region in each of the genetic backgrounds. A Genome-wide association study (GWAS) using 211 accessions of the ssp. melo further identified two regions on chromosome 8 associated with the production of aromas, one of these regions overlapping with the 154.1 kb interval containing ETHQV8.1. The ETHQV8.1 region contains several candidate genes that may be related to fruit ripening.
