    Extreme ultraviolet emission lines of Ni XII in laboratory and solar spectra

    Wavelengths for emission lines arising from 3s23p5-3s3p6 and 3s23p5-3s23p43d transitions in Ni XII have been measured in extreme ultraviolet spectra of the Joint European Torus(JET) tokamak. The 3s23p5 2P1/2-3s23p4(3P)3d 2D3/2 line is found to lie at 152.90 ± 0.02 A, a significant improvement over the previous experimental determination of 152.95 ± 0.5 A. This new wavelength is in good agreement with a solar identification at 152.84 ± 0.06 A, confirming the presence of this line in the solar spectrum. The Ni XII feature at 152.15 A may be a result only of the 3s23p5 2P3/2-3s23p4(3P)3d 2D5/2 transition, rather than a blend of this line with 3s23p5 2P3/2-3s23p (3P)3d 2P1/2, as previously suggested. Unidentified emission lines at 295.32 and 317.61 A in solar flare spectra from the Skylab mission are tentatively identified as the 3s23p5 2P3/2-3s3p6 2S1/2 and 3s23p5 2P1/2-3s3p6 2S1/2 transitions in Ni XII, which have laboratory wavelengths of 295.33 and 317.50 A, respectively. Additional support for these identifications is provided by the line intensity ratio for the solar features, which shows good agreement between theory and observation

    A comparison of theoretical line intensity ratios for Ni XII with extreme ultraviolet observations from the JET tokamak

    Recent R-matrix calculations of electron impact excitation rates in Ni XII are used to derive the emission line ratios R1 = I (154.17 Å)/I (152.15 Å), R2 = I (152.95 Å)/I (152.15 Å) and R3 = I (160.55 Å)/I (152.15 Å). This is the first time (to our knowledge) that theoretical emission line ratios have been calculated for this ion. The ratios are found to be insensitive to changes in the adopted electron density (Ne) when Ne >= 5 × 10^11 cm−3, typical of laboratory plasmas. However, they do vary with electron temperature (Te), with for example R1 and R3 changing by factors of 1.3 and 1.8, respectively, between Te = 10^5 and 10^6 K. A comparison of the theoretical line ratios with measurements from the Joint European Torus (JET) tokamak reveals very good agreement between theory and observation for R1, with an average discrepancy of only 7%. Agreement between the calculated and experimental ratios for R2 and R3 is less satisfactory, with average differences of 30 and 33%, respectively. These probably arise from errors in the JET instrument calibration curve. However, the discrepancies are smaller than the uncertainties in the R2 and R3 measurements. Our results, in particular for R1, provide experimental support for the accuracy of the Ni XII line ratio calculations, and hence for the atomic data adopted in their derivation

    Thermal structure of a gas-permeable lava dome and timescale separation in its response to perturbation

    The thermal boundary layer at the surface of a volcanic lava dome is investigated through a continuum model of the thermodynamic advection diffusion processes resulting from magmatic gas flow through the dome matrix. The magmatic gas mass flux, porosity and permeability of the rock are identified as key parameters. New, theoretical, nonlinear steady-state thermal profiles are reported which give a realistic surface temperature of 210 degC for a region of lava dome surface through which a gas flux of 3.5 x 10-3 kg s-1 m-2 passes. This contrasts favourably with earlier purely diffusive thermal models, which cool too quickly. Results are presented for time-dependent perturbations of the steady states as a response to: changes in surface pressure, a sudden rockfall from the lava dome surface, and a change in the magmatic gas mass flux at depth. Together with a generalized analysis using the method of multiple scales, this identifies two characteristic time scales associated with the thermal evolution of a dome carapace: a short time scale of several minutes, over which the magmatic gas mass flux, density, and pressure change to a new quasi-steady-state, and a longer time scale of several days, over which the thermal profile changes to a new equilibrium distribution. Over the longer time scale the dynamic properties of the dome continue to evolve, but only in slavish response to the ongoing temperature evolution. In the light of this time scale separation, the use of surface temperature measurements to infer changes in the magmatic gas flux for use in volcanic hazard prediction is discussed

    Passive, broadband and low-frequency suppression of laser amplitude noise to the shot-noise limit using hollow-core fibre

    We use hollow-core fibre to preserve the spectrum and temporal profile of picosecond laser pulses in CBD to suppress 2.6 dB of amplitude noise at MHz noise frequencies, to within 0.01 dB of the shot-noise limit. We provide an enhanced version of the CBD scheme that concatenates circuits to suppress over multiple frequencies and over broad frequency ranges --- we perform a first demonstration that reduces total excess amplitude noise, between 2 - 6 MHz, by 85%. These demonstrations enable passive, broad-band, all-guided fibre laser technology operating at the shot-noise limit.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    Low grade Ductal Carcinoma in situ (DCIS): how best to describe it?

    BACKGROUND: In the absence of definitive data about the natural history of DCIS the appropriateness of describing DCIS as cancer is controversial. METHODS: We conducted a survey amongst British Breast Group (BBG) members, to determine which descriptions of DCIS were deemed most accurate and appropriate. RESULTS: 54/73 (74%) attendees completed the survey: A majority (34/54; 63%) said they would be comfortable using the description that explained DCIS as abnormal cells in the milk ducts that had not spread into other breast tissue and which did not need urgent treatment as if it was breast cancer and this description was overall the most preferred (24/54; 44%). CONCLUSIONS: Little consensus exists regarding how best to explain low grade DCIS to patients

    The epidemiology of low vision and blindness associated with trichiasis in southern Sudan.

    BACKGROUND: We investigated vision status associated with trachomatous trichiasis (TT) and explored age-sex patterns of low vision and blindness associated with trichiasis in Mankien district of southern Sudan where trachoma prevention and trichiasis surgery were absent. METHODS: A population based survey was undertaken and eligible persons underwent eye examination. Visual acuity (VA) was tested using Snellen E chart and persons with TT identified. Vision status was defined using the WHO categories of visual impairment based on presenting VA: normal vision (VA > or = 6/18 in better eye); low vision (VA or = 3/60 in better eye); and blindness (VA < 3/60 in better eye). An ordinal logistic regression model was fitted and age/sex specific distribution of vision status predicted. RESULTS: Overall 341/3,567 persons examined had any TT. Analysis was based on 319 persons, 22 persons were excluded: 20 had both TT and cataract; and 2 had missing VA data. Of the 319 persons: 158(49.5%) had trichiasis-related corneal opacity (CO); bilateral TT and bilateral CO were found in 251(78.7%) and 110 (34.5%), respectively; 146 (45.8%) had low vision or blindness; the ratio of low vision to blindness was 3.2:1; and no sex differences were observed. In our model the predicted distribution of vision status was: normal vision, 53.9% (95% CI 50.9-56.9); low vision, 35.3% (95% CI 33.3-37.2); and blindness, 10.9% (95% CI 9.7-12.0). CONCLUSION: We have reported severe trichiasis and high prevalence of vision loss among persons with trichiasis. Our survey showed that almost 1 in 20 of the entire population suffered low vision or blindness associated with trachoma. The need for trichiasis surgery, trachoma prevention services, and rehabilitation of the blind is acute

    Centre for Arts and Learning 2020-21 Affective Digital Presence in Creative Practice Tuesday 3 November, 6.30-8 Miranda Matthews and Francis Gilbert In these times of challenge and change we are called upon to reflect on what it means to connect with one another through digital platforms. Since March 2020 many of our physical embodied interactions in practice have been resituated and transferred, as forms of possibility in virtual learning environments. These digital platforms can seem like sanitised machinic assemblages in which the affect of human presence sometimes make itself apparent, and sometimes finds ways of forming resistance. Presence of the other is at once incredibly close, and yet phenomenally distant. Technology can create rapid connections, yet many do not yet have the resources to access emerging opportunities. These are some of the factors that raise important debates in the arts and learning. In this year’s programme of CAL Events we will be looking at how arts practitioners interact with digital interfaces to build affective and inclusive connections, for emotive and interactive learning environments. Miranda Matthews and Francis Gilbert will be discussing the significance of affect in online learning spaces through arts practice. The combination of free writing and drawing as emotive, expressive, emancipating and cathartic experiences will be contextualised through interdisciplinary practice research. This evening will include workshops in free writing and drawing, as practice based explorations of what it feels like to be human in an online space
