Does a high level of multimodality mean less car use? An exploration of multimodality trends in England
Some existing studies have suggested that a higher level of multimodality—the use of more than one transport mode within a given period of time—may be desirable to achieve societies less dependent on cars. The aim of this study was to investigate the trends in individual multimodality in England. In addition, we explored whether these trends were homogenous, i.e. similar between socio-economic characteristics, and whether changes in multimodality corresponded with changes in car use and the use of other transport modes. Our analyses showed that in contrast to reported trends in existing research, the level of multimodality in England decreased between 1995 and 2015. These trends stratified by income were diverging, which may imply that inequality in transport opportunities may be increasing. In contrast, the trends for age and gender were converging. In addition, we found that the car mode share remained fairly stable and absolute car use decreased since 2004, whilst multimodality decreased. This suggests that there is no necessary relationship between aggregate levels of car use and the average individual level of multimodality. Moreover, our analyses showed that these trends were very similarly independent of which indicator was applied. This indicates that for analysing trends in multimodality, the choice of indicator may not be that important, and indicators that are elementary to calculate and easy to interpret, e.g. number of modes used, highlight trends that are highly consistent with more sophisticated metrics. Magnetic properties of commensurate Bose-Bose mixtures in one-dimensional optical lattices
We investigate magnetic properties of strongly interacting bosonic mixtures
confined in one dimensional geometries, focusing on recently realized Rb-K
gases with tunable interspecies interactions. By combining analytical
perturbation theory results with density-matrix-renormalization group
calculations, we provide quantitative estimates of the ground state phase
diagram as a function of the relevant microscopic quantities, identifying the
more favorable experimental regimes in order to access the various magnetic
phases. Finally, we qualitatively discuss the observability of such phases in

A calcareous nannofossil and organic geochemical study of marine palaeoenvironmental changes across the Sinemurian/Pliensbachian (early Jurassic, ~191Ma) in Portugal
The Sinemurian/Pliensbachian boundary (~ 191 Ma) is acknowledged as one of the most important steps in the radiation of planktonic organisms, especially primary producers such as dinoflagellates and coccolithophores. To date, there is no detailed study documenting changes in planktonic assemblages related to palaeoceanographic changes across this boundary. The aim of this study is to characterize the palaeoenvironmental changes occurring across the Sinemurian/Pliensbachian boundary at the São Pedro de Moel section (Lusitanian Basin, Portugal) using micropalaeontology and organic geochemistry approaches. Combined calcareous nannofossil assemblage and lipid biomarker data document for a decrease in primary productivity in relation to a major sea-level rise occurring above the boundary. The Lusitanian Basin was particularly restricted during the late Sinemurian with a relatively low sea level, a configuration that led to the recurrent development of black shales. After a sharp sea-level fall, the basin became progressively deeper and more open during the earliest Pliensbachian, subsequently to a major transgression. This sea-level increase seems to have been a global feature and could have been related to the opening of the Hispanic Corridor that connected the Tethys and palaeo-Pacific oceans. The palaeoceanographic and palaeoclimatic changes induced by this opening may have played a role in the diversification of coccolithophores with the first occurrence or colonization of Tethyan waters by placolith-type coccoliths
Native defects in ultra-high vacuum grown graphene islands on Cu(111)
We present a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study of native defects in
graphene islands grown by ultra-high vacuum (UHV) decomposition of ethylene on
Cu(111). We characterize these defects through a survey of their apparent
heights, atomic-resolution imaging, and detailed tunneling spectroscopy. Bright
defects that occur only in graphene regions are identified as C site point
defects in the graphene lattice and are most likely single C vacancies. Dark
defect types are observed in both graphene and Cu regions, and are likely point
defects in the Cu surface. We also present data showing the importance of bias
and tip termination to the appearance of the defects in STM images and the
ability to achieve atomic resolution. Finally, we present tunneling
spectroscopy measurements probing the influence of point defects on the local
electronic landscape of graphene islands.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
ACTH4 -10, Substance P, and Dizolcipine (Mk-801) Accelerate Functional Recovery After Hemilabyrinthectomy in Goldfish
In this study, we evaluated the goldfish model of hemilabyrinthectomy for investigating potential recovery-promoting drugs. In this lesion model, the unilateral removal of the labyrinth induces a postural imbalance in response to light (Dorsal Light Reflex), from which the animals can recover over time. The behavioral effects of two neuropeptides were tested–namely, of substance P and ACTH4-10, both of which are known to promote functional recovery in several other lesion models. Furthermore, the effect of MK- 801, an antagonist of the glutamatergic NMDAreceptor subtype, was tested because this substance has also been shown to exert a neuroprotective effect. After lesion of the right labyrinth, the animals (n=12) were treated intraperitoneally daily either with vehicle (n=12), substance P (n=11) , ACTH4-10 (n=12) , or MK- 801 (n=12) . Another group(n=11) , which served as a non-lesion control, did not receive hemilabyrinthectomy or systemic injections. The lesion group, treated post-operatively with vehicle, did not recover from the postural deviation over the 24-d testing period. In contrast, all three test substances accelerated the functional recovery after unilateral labyrinthectomy. The decrease of the dorsal light reflex persisted even after cessation of drug treatment after 20d. The results indicate that using the dorsal light reflex in the model of hemilabyrinthectomy in goldfish provides a useful approach to studying the ability of potential new neurotrophic or neuroprotective drugs to promote functional recovery
Deep-well ultrafast manipulation of a SQUID flux qubit
Superconducting devices based on the Josephson effect are effectively used
for the implementation of qubits and quantum gates. The manipulation of
superconducting qubits is generally performed by using microwave pulses with
frequencies from 5 to 15 GHz, obtaining a typical operating clock from 100MHz
to 1GHz. A manipulation based on simple pulses in the absence of microwaves is
also possible. In our system a magnetic flux pulse modifies the potential of a
double SQUID qubit from a symmetric double well to a single deep well
condition. By using this scheme with a Nb/AlOx/Nb system we obtained coherent
oscillations with sub-nanosecond period (tunable from 50ps to 200ps), very fast
with respect to other manipulating procedures, and with a coherence time up to
10ns, of the order of what obtained with similar devices and technologies but
using microwave manipulation. We introduce the ultrafast manipulation
presenting experimental results, new issues related to this approach (such as
the use of a feedback procedure for cancelling the effect of "slow"
fluctuations), and open perspectives, such as the possible use of RSFQ logic

Superconducting nanowire photon number resolving detector at telecom wavelength
The optical-to-electrical conversion, which is the basis of optical
detectors, can be linear or nonlinear. When high sensitivities are needed
single-photon detectors (SPDs) are used, which operate in a strongly nonlinear
mode, their response being independent of the photon number. Nevertheless,
photon-number resolving (PNR) detectors are needed, particularly in quantum
optics, where n-photon states are routinely produced. In quantum communication,
the PNR functionality is key to many protocols for establishing, swapping and
measuring entanglement, and can be used to detect photon-number-splitting
attacks. A linear detector with single-photon sensitivity can also be used for
measuring a temporal waveform at extremely low light levels, e.g. in
long-distance optical communications, fluorescence spectroscopy, optical
time-domain reflectometry. We demonstrate here a PNR detector based on parallel
superconducting nanowires and capable of counting up to 4 photons at
telecommunication wavelengths, with ultralow dark count rate and high counting
frequency
A new approach to analyzing solar coronal spectra and updated collisional ionization equilibrium calculations. II. Additional ionization rate coefficients
We have reanalyzed SUMER observations of a parcel of coronal gas using new
collisional ionization equilibrium (CIE) calculations. These improved CIE
fractional abundances were calculated using state-of-the-art electron-ion
recombination data for K-shell, L-shell, Na-like, and Mg-like ions of all
elements from H through Zn and, additionally, Al- through Ar-like ions of Fe.
They also incorporate the latest recommended electron impact ionization data
for all ions of H through Zn. Improved CIE calculations based on these
recombination and ionization data are presented here. We have also developed a
new systematic method for determining the average emission measure () and
electron temperature () of an isothermal plasma. With our new CIE data and
our new approach for determining average and , we have reanalyzed
SUMER observations of the solar corona. We have compared our results with those
of previous studies and found some significant differences for the derived
and . We have also calculated the enhancement of coronal elemental
abundances compared to their photospheric abundances, using the SUMER
observations themselves to determine the abundance enhancement factor for each
of the emitting elements. Our observationally derived first ionization
potential (FIP) factors are in reasonable agreement with the theoretical model

Palaeoenvironmental significance of Toarcian black shales and event deposits from southern Beaujolais, France
New sedimentological, biostratigraphical and geochemical data recording the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE) are reported from a marginal marine succession in southern Beaujolais, France. The serpentinum and bifrons ammonite zones record black shales with high (1-10 wt%) total organic carbon contents (TOC) and dysoxia-tolerant benthic fauna typical of the ‘Schistes Carton' facies well documented in contemporaneous nearby basins. The base of the serpentinum ammonite zone, however, differs from coeval strata of most adjacent basinal series in that it presents several massive storm beds particularly enriched in juvenile ammonites and the dysoxia-tolerant, miniaturized gastropod Coelodiscus. This storm-dominated interval records a marked negative 5‰ carbonate and organic carbon isotope excursion being time-equivalent with that recording storm- and mass flow-deposits in sections of the Lusitanian Basin, Portugal, pointing to the existence of a major tempestite/turbidite event over tropical areas during the T-OAE. Although several explanations remain possible at present, we favour climatically induced changes in platform morphology and storm activity as the main drivers of these sedimentological features. In addition, we show that recent weathering, most probably due to infiltration of O2-rich meteoric water, resulted in the preferential removal of 12C-enriched organic carbon, dramatic TOC loss and total destruction of the lamination of the black shale sequence over most of the studied exposure. These latter observations imply that extreme caution should be applied when interpreting the palaeoenvironmental significance of sediments lacking TOC enrichment and lamination from outcrops with limited surface exposure
The diverse Grania fauna (Clitellata : Enchytraeidae) of the Esperance area, Western Australia, with descriptions of two new species
Seven species of the marine enchytraeid genus Grania Southern, 1913 are described from sediments sampled during the 2003 International Workshop on the Marine Flora and Fauna of Esperance Bay and the Recherche Archipelago, on the southern coast of Western Australia. Two species are new to science, the euryhaline Tasmanian G. dolichura Rota and Erseus, 2000 represents a new record for the state, and the remaining four species were known from other parts of Western Australia. Grania quaerens sp. n. is recognized by having a high chaetal index (= 5 short chaetal foot), small coelomocytes, penial apparati with long whip-like terminal stylets, conspicuous spermathecae with ectally bulbous ducts, and ectally granulated ampullae housing sperm rings in their ental region. Grania sperantia sp. n. is readily distinguishable by the complete lack of lateral chaetae, a multiple-banded pattern of the clitellum, extremely long sperm funnels, and the intrasegmental location of the spermathecal pores. The latter new species and four others in the collection (G. bykane Coates, 1990, G. crassiducta Coates, 1990, G. dolichura, and G. ersei Coates, 1990) are remarkable in possessing the head organ, a sensory structure unique to Grania that was not noted previously in Western Australian species. When considering the whole genus, the geographic pattern of the head organ appears southern-centred: of the 17 species of Grania reported to possess it, as many as 13 inhabit the southern latitudes.
