UV-visible detector and LED based n-ZnO/p-Si heterojunction formed by electrodeposition
In this study, we have investigated the heterojunctions formed by n-ZnO thin films deposited on (100) p-Si:B using electrochemical deposition (ECD) technique. Structural, electrical and luminescence features of the thin films were respectively measured. Optimal sets of growth conditions seem to be the ones that are undergone for the samples D1 and D2. It was observed that n-ZnO thin films have dominantly preferred orientation of (002). It has been shown that the heterostructures exhibited reasonable rectifying behavior with turn-on voltage of about 1.2 V and ideality factor of 2.1. In case of illumination with 400 nm wavelength light, significant increase occurred especially in reverse bias current by a factor of 103 and 102 for the D1 and the D2, respectively. Bandgap of ZnO thin films has been determined to be 3.4 eV at the room temperature by using the band edge photoluminescence measurements. Finally, the room temperature electroluminescence (EL) results show that the heterostructures exhibits observable broad luminescence centered at the wavelengths of 390 and 510 nm for D1 and 470 nm for D2, respectively. Additionally, sharp lasing peaks are also observed in the EL spectra, probably due to the multiple scattering effects
Alternative approaches to pursuing architecture as a profession: Dicle University sample
In our country, it is known that in recent years there has been an increase in the number of individuals who have
completed more than one department in university education or who are continuing their education. Since the
number of students of the Department of Architecture of Dicle University students who have already completed
another department has been remarkable, extensive research and investigation have been carried out on this
subject. This study aimed to question the preference and satisfaction in professional life with reasons of
expectations, anticipation, and perspectives of architecture profession being chosen as a second profession. The
study was carried out with 73 participants who continued their education and graduated from the Architecture
Department of the Dicle University Faculty of Architecture. One of the most important result is that people who
have been educated in the Department of Architecture, but who have already completed another department,
have consciously selected this way to reach the Architecture profession, and have gone to more technical
departments in this election. It is understood that the architectural profession which has reached to the existence
of mankind will never lose its popularity in the society with its creative, technical, social and communicative
aspects that it has shown up to the present day and will be among the preferred professions in every period

Does low-molecular-weight heparin influence the antimyeloma effects of thalidomide? A retrospective analysis of data from the GIMEMA, nordic and turkish myeloma study groups
Background/Aim: Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) has been shown to prolong survival among patients with solid tumors, but its role among myeloma patients is unknown. Patients: Data from the GIMEMA (Gruppo Italiano Malattie Ematologiche dell'Adulto), Nordic and Turkish myeloma study groups comparing melphalan and prednisolone with (MPT, n: 404) or without thalidomide (MP, n: 393) are analyzed for effects of LMWH. Forty percent (159/394) of the patients on MPT and 7.4% (29/390) in the MP arm received LMWH. Results: Thalidomide improved response and progression-free survival (PFS). Regardless of thalidomide treatment, response rate was higher among those receiving LMWH vs. none vs. other anticoagulants (58.1 vs. 44.9 vs. 50.4%, p = 0.01). PFS was significantly longer (median 32 vs. 21 and 17 vs. 17 months, p = 0.004) only among international scoring system (ISS) I patients receiving MPT +/- LMWH vs. MP +/- LMWH. The group of MPT patients who also received LMWH had a better OS compared to those who did not [45 months, 95% confidence interval (CI) 27.7-62.3, vs. 32 months, 95% CI 26.1-37.9; p = 0.034]. When multivariate analysis was repeated in subgroups, thalidomide was no longer a significant factor (response, PFS) among those receiving LMWH. Conclusion: Addition of LMWH to MPT, in particular in patients with low ISS, suggests additive effects, but the results are limited by the retrospective design of our study. (C) 2015 S. A Rare Benign Tumor in a 14-Year-Old Girl
Background. Oncocytomas are the second most common benign renal neoplasm but, unfortunately, they are difficult to differentiate from renal cell carcinoma. Renal oncocytomas are rare and have mostly been reported in adults. To our knowledge, this is only the sixth pediatric reported case of renal oncocytoma worldwide. Case Presentation. A 14-year-old Yemeni girl with a recurrent history of urinary tract infections came to our clinic complaining of left flank pain with a frontal headache. Ultrasound showed a 3 cm, well-defined echogenic lesion with mild vascularity. This lesion increased in size on her subsequent follow-ups. Computed tomography showed no intralesional fat, vessels invasion, or enlarged lymph nodes. The patient underwent laparoscopic radical nephrectomy, and a pathology report confirmed the diagnosis of renal oncocytoma. Conclusion and Recommendations. We present the rare occurrence of renal oncocytoma in a pediatric patient and highlight the importance of considering oncocytomas in the diagnosis of a renal mass

Assessment of cardiac remodeling in asymptomatic mitral regurgitation for surgery timing: a comparative study of echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract

Background

Early surgery is recommended for asymptomatic severe mitral regurgitation (MR), because of increased postoperative left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in patients with late surgery. On the other hand, recent reports emphasized a "watchful waiting" process for the determination of the proper time of mitral valve surgery. In our study, we compared magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and transthoracic echocardiography to evaluate the LV and left atrial (LA) remodeling; for better definitions of patients that may benefit from early valve surgery.

Methods

Twenty-one patients with moderate to severe asymptomatic MR were evaluated by echocardiography and MRI. LA and LV ejection fractions (EFs) were calculated by echocardiography and MRI. Pulmonary veins (PVs) were measured from vein orifices in diastole and systole from the tangential of an imaginary circle that completed LA wall. Right upper PV indices were calculated with the formula; (Right upper PV diastolic diameter- Right upper PV systolic diameter)/Right upper PV diastolic diameter.

Results

In 9 patients there were mismatches between echocardiography and MRI measurements of LV EF. LV EFs were calculated ≥60% by echocardiography, meanwhile < 60% by MRI in these 9 patients. Severity of MR evaluated by effective regurgitant orifice area (EROA) didn't differ with preserved and depressed EFs by MRI (p > 0.05). However, both right upper PV indices (0.16 ± 0.06 vs. 0.24 ± 0.08, p: 0.024) and LA EFs (0.19 ± 0.09 vs. 0.33 ± 0.14, p: 0.025) were significantly decreased in patients with depressed EFs when compared to patients with normal EFs.

Conclusions

MRI might be preferred when small changes in functional parameters like LV EF, LA EF, and PV index are of clinical importance to disease management like asymptomatic MR patients that we follow up for appropriate surgery timing.</p
