Consumer perceptions of beef healthiness: results from a qualitative study in four European countries
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Consumer perception of the healthiness of beef is an important determinant of beef consumption. However, little is known about how consumers perceive the healthiness of beef. The aim of this study is to shed light on the associations between beef and health.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Eight focus group discussions were conducted in four European countries (France, UK, Germany, Spain), each consisting of seven to nine participants. A content analysis was performed on the transcripts of these discussions.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Although beef was generally perceived as healthful, focus group participants expected positive as well as negative effects of beef consumption on their health. Labelled, branded, fresh and lean beef were perceived as signalling healthful beef, in contrast with further processed and packaged beef. Consumers felt that their individual choices could make a difference with respect to the healthiness of beef consumed. Focus group participants were not in favour of improving beef healthiness during processing, but rather focussed on appropriate consumption behaviour and preparation methods.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The individual responsibility for health implies that consumers should be able to make correct judgements about how healthful their food is. However, the results of this study indicate that an accurate assessment of beef healthiness is not always straightforward. The presented results on consumer perceptions of beef healthiness provide insights into consumer decision making processes, which are important for the innovation and product differentiation in the European beef sector, as well as for public health policy decisions related to meat consumption in general and beef consumption in particular.</p
A phase I study of sequential versus concurrent interleukin-3 and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor in advanced breast cancer patients treated with FLAC (5-fluorouracil, leucovorin, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide) chemotherapy
Cumulative thrombocytopenia is a dose-limiting toxicity of dose-intensive chemotherapy for advanced breast cancer. In this phase I study, we have studied the hematologic toxicity associated with sequential interleukin-3 (IL-3) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF; molgramostim) administration after multiple cycles of FLAC (5-fluorouracil, leucovorin, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide) chemotherapy compared with that after concurrent cytokine administration or to each cytokine administered alone. Ninety- three patients with advanced breast cancer were treated with five cycles of FLAC chemotherapy and either IL-3 alone, GM-CSF alone, sequential IL-3 and GM-CSF administered by schedule A (5 days of IL-3 followed by 10 days of GM-CSF) or schedule B (9 days of IL-3 followed by 6 days of GM-CSF), or concurrent administration of IL-3 and GM-CSF for 15 days. Cohorts of patients were treated with one of four dose levels of IL-3 (1,2.5, 5, and 10 micrograms/kg) administered subcutaneously for each schedule of cytokine administration. The GM-CSF dose in all schedules was 5 micrograms/kg/day. Sequential IL-3 and GM- CSF (schedule B) was associated with higher platelet nadirs, shorter durations of platelet counts less than 50,000/microL, and the need for fewer platelet transfusions over five cycles of FLAC chemotherapy compared with concurrent cytokines, sequential IL-3 and GM-CSF schedule A, and GM-CSF alone. Concurrent IL-3 and GM-CSF was associated with unexpected platelet toxicity. The duration of granulocytopenia after FLAC chemotherapy was significantly worse with IL-3 alone compared with each of the GM-CSF-containing cytokine regimens. Although no cycle 1 maximum tolerated dose for IL-3 was defined in this study, 5 micrograms/kg was well tolerated over multiple cycles of therapy and is recommended for future studies. The data from this phase I study suggest that sequential IL-3 and GM-CSF with IL-3 administered for 9 days before beginning GM-CSF may be superior to shorter durations of IL- 3 administered sequentially with GM-CSF, to concurrent IL-3 and GM-CSF, and to either colony-stimulating factor alone in ameliorating the cumulative hematologic toxicity associated with multiple cycles of FLAC chemotherapy. Additional studies of sequential IL-3 and GM-CSF are warranted.</jats:p

Comparison of Environmental Impact and Nutritional Quality among a European Sample Population – findings from the Food4Me study
Abstract This study evaluates the relationship between environmental impacts and diet quality through several environmental and nutritional indicators, using data from over 1400 participants across seven European countries in the Food4Me study. Comparisons of environmental impacts and dietary quality were evaluated across country, gender groups, and dietary patterns. While there was clear variability within the different subsets, there were large differences observed in both dietary quality and environmental impacts between cultures, genders, and dietary patterns. Individuals abstaining from red meat consistently had lower impacts in combination with lower consumption of harmful nutrients (saturated fats, sodium, and sugars) while maintaining average intake of beneficial nutrients. A ‘best practice’ diet with low impacts, adequate nutrient intake, and low saturated fats, sodium, and sugars, was constructed from the sample and used as a benchmark. Recorded eating patterns were compared to this recommended diet. On average, intakes of sweets, meats, and drinks should be decreased and intakes of vegetables and cereals increased, at varying rates depending on country and gender. However, the study shows a large spread of eating patterns and recommendations for lowering environmental impacts and increasing nutritional quality vary greatly among individuals
