A novel CMB polarization likelihood package for large angular scales built from combined WMAP and Planck LFI legacy maps
We present a CMB large-scale polarization dataset obtained by combining WMAP
Ka, Q and V with Planck 70 GHz maps. We employ the legacy frequency maps
released by the WMAP and Planck collaborations and perform our own Galactic
foreground mitigation technique, which relies on Planck 353 GHz for polarized
dust and on Planck 30 GHz and WMAP K for polarized synchrotron. We derive a
single, optimally-noise-weighted, low-residual-foreground map and the
accompanying noise covariance matrix. These are shown, through
analysis, to be robust over an ample collection of Galactic masks. We use this
dataset, along with the Planck legacy Commander temperature solution, to build
a pixel-based low-resolution CMB likelihood package, whose robustness we test
extensively with the aid of simulations, finding excellent consistency. Using
this likelihood package alone, we constrain the optical depth to reionazation
at C.L., on 54\% of the sky. Adding the
Planck high- temperature and polarization legacy likelihood, the Planck
lensing likelihood and BAO observations we find
in a full CDM exploration. The
latter bounds are slightly less constraining than those obtained employing
\Planck\ HFI CMB data for large angle polarization, that only include EE
correlations. Our bounds are based on a largely independent dataset that does
include also TE correlations. They are generally well compatible with Planck
HFI preferring slightly higher values of . We make the low-resolution
Planck and WMAP joint dataset publicly available along with the accompanying

Vestibulo-Oculomotor Reflex Recording Using the Scleral Search Coil Technique. Review of Peripheral Vestibular Disorders
Our goal is to review vestibulo-oculomotor reflex (VOR) studies on several peripheral vestibular disorders (Ménière’s disease, vestibular neuritis, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, superior canal dehiscence syndrome, and vestibular neuroma), using the scleral search coil (SSC) technique. Head movements are detected by vestibular receptors and the elicited VOR is responsible for compensatory 3 dimensional eye movements. Therefore, to study the VOR it is necessary to assess the direction and velocity of 3 dimensional head, and eye movements. This can be achieved using the SSC technique. Interaction between a scleral search coil and an alternating magnetic field generates an electrical signal that is proportional to eye position. Ideally, eye rotation axis is aligned with head rotation axis and VOR gain (eye velocity/head velocity) for horizontal and vertical head rotations is almost 1. The VOR gain, however, for torsional head rotations is smaller and about 0.

In the superior canal dehiscence syndrome, patients can
have sound- or pressure-induced vertigo and oscillopsia.
They may also present conductive hearing loss or higher
than normal bone conduction thresholds. Clinical manifestations
are due to the effect of a third mobile window in the
inner ear created by the dehiscence. Diagnosis is based on
clinical manifestations, vertical and rotatory nystagmus induced
by sound and pressure reflecting SSC stimulation, reduced
threshold and increased amplitude of vestibular
evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) and temporal bone CT
scan images showing the SSC dehiscence. Characteristic eye
movements can be recorded with the scleral search coil

Posterior cortical atrophy and Alzheimer’s disease : a meta-analytic review of neuropsychological and brain morphometry studies
This paper presents the first systematic review and meta-analysis of neuropsychological and brain morphometry studies comparing posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) to typical Alzheimer's disease (tAD). Literature searches were conducted for brain morphometry and neuropsychological studies including a PCA and a tAD group. Compared to healthy controls (HC), PCA patients exhibited significant decreases in temporal, occipital and parietal gray matter (GM) volumes, whereas tAD patients showed extensive left temporal atrophy. Compared to tAD patients, participants with PCA showed greater GM volume reduction in the right occipital gyrus extending to the posterior lobule. In addition, PCA patients showed less GM volume loss in the left parahippocampal gyrus and left hippocampus than tAD patients. PCA patients exhibit significantly greater impairment in Immediate Visuospatial Memory as well as Visuoperceptual and Visuospatial Abilities than patients with tAD. However, tAD patients showed greater impairment in Delayed Auditory/Verbal Memory than patients with PCA. Planck intermediate results. XXIX. All-sky dust modelling with Planck, IRAS, and WISE observations
We present all-sky modelling of the high resolution Planck, IRAS, and WISE
infrared (IR) observations using the physical dust model presented by Draine
and Li in 2007 (DL). We study the performance and results of this model, and
discuss implications for future dust modelling. The present work extends the DL
dust modelling carried out on nearby galaxies using Herschel and Spitzer data
to Galactic dust emission. We employ the DL dust model to generate maps of the
dust mass surface density, the optical extinction Av, and the starlight
intensity parametrized by Umin. The DL model reproduces the observed spectral
energy distribution (SED) satisfactorily over most of the sky, with small
deviations in the inner Galactic disk and in low ecliptic latitude areas. We
compare the DL optical extinction Av for the diffuse interstellar medium with
optical estimates for 2 10^5 quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) observed in the Sloan
digital sky survey. The DL Av estimates are larger than those determined
towards QSOs by a factor of about 2, which depends on Umin. The DL fitting
parameter Umin, effectively determined by the wavelength where the SED peaks,
appears to trace variations in the far-IR opacity of the dust grains per unit
Av, and not only in the starlight intensity. To circumvent the model
deficiency, we propose an empirical renormalization of the DL Av estimate,
dependent of Umin, which compensates for the systematic differences found with
QSO observations. This renormalization also brings into agreement the DL Av
estimates with those derived for molecular clouds from the near-IR colours of
stars in the 2 micron all sky survey. The DL model and the QSOs data are used
to compress the spectral information in the Planck and IRAS observations for
the diffuse ISM to a family of 20 SEDs normalized per Av, parameterized by
Umin, which may be used to test and empirically calibrate dust models.Comment: Final version that has appeared in A&
Planck 2015 results. XXIII. The thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect--cosmic infrared background correlation
We use Planck data to detect the cross-correlation between the thermal
Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect and the infrared emission from the galaxies that
make up the the cosmic infrared background (CIB). We first perform a stacking
analysis towards Planck-confirmed galaxy clusters. We detect infrared emission
produced by dusty galaxies inside these clusters and demonstrate that the
infrared emission is about 50% more extended than the tSZ effect. Modelling the
emission with a Navarro--Frenk--White profile, we find that the radial profile
concentration parameter is . This indicates
that infrared galaxies in the outskirts of clusters have higher infrared flux
than cluster-core galaxies. We also study the cross-correlation between tSZ and
CIB anisotropies, following three alternative approaches based on power
spectrum analyses: (i) using a catalogue of confirmed clusters detected in
Planck data; (ii) using an all-sky tSZ map built from Planck frequency maps;
and (iii) using cross-spectra between Planck frequency maps. With the three
different methods, we detect the tSZ-CIB cross-power spectrum at significance
levels of (i) 6 , (ii) 3 , and (iii) 4 . We model the
tSZ-CIB cross-correlation signature and compare predictions with the
measurements. The amplitude of the cross-correlation relative to the fiducial
model is . This result is consistent with
predictions for the tSZ-CIB cross-correlation assuming the best-fit
cosmological model from Planck 2015 results along with the tSZ and CIB scaling

2P15-p16.1 microdeletions encompassing and proximal to BCL11A are associated with elevated HbF in addition to neurologic impairment
Elevated fetal hemoglobin (HbF) ameliorates the clinical severity of hemoglobinopathies such as β-thalassemia and sickle cell anemia. Currently, the only curative approach for individuals under chronic transfusion/chelation support therapy is allogeneic stem cell transplantation. However, recent analyses of heritable variations in HbF levels have provided a new therapeutic target for HbF reactivation: the transcriptional repressor BCL11A. Erythroid-specific BCL11A abrogation is now actively being sought as a therapeutic avenue, but the specific impact of such disruption in humans remains to be determined. Although single nucleotide polymorphisms in BCL11A erythroid regulatory elements have been reported, coding mutations are scarcer. It is thus of great interest that patients have recently been described with microdeletions encompassing BCL11A. These patients display neurodevelopmental abnormalities, but whether they show increased HbF has not been reported. We have examined the hematological phenotype, HbF levels, and erythroid BCL11A expression in 3 such patients. Haploinsufficiency of BCL11A induces only partial developmental g-globin silencing. Of greater interest is that a patient with a downstream deletion exhibits reduced BCL11A expression and increased HbF. Novel erythroid-specific regulatory elements in this region may be required for normal erythroid BCL11A expression, whereas loss of separate elements in the developing brain may explain the neurological phenotype
Measurement of the top quark-pair production cross section with ATLAS in pp collisions at \sqrt{s}=7\TeV
A measurement of the production cross-section for top quark pairs(\ttbar)
in collisions at \sqrt{s}=7 \TeV is presented using data recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected in two
different topologies: single lepton (electron or muon ) with large
missing transverse energy and at least four jets, and dilepton (,
or ) with large missing transverse energy and at least two jets. In a
data sample of 2.9 pb-1, 37 candidate events are observed in the single-lepton
topology and 9 events in the dilepton topology. The corresponding expected
backgrounds from non-\ttbar Standard Model processes are estimated using
data-driven methods and determined to be events and events, respectively. The kinematic properties of the selected events are
consistent with SM \ttbar production. The inclusive top quark pair production
cross-section is measured to be \sigmattbar=145 \pm 31 ^{+42}_{-27} pb where
the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The measurement

Inclusive search for same-sign dilepton signatures in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
An inclusive search is presented for new physics in events with two isolated leptons (e or mu) having the same electric charge. The data are selected from events collected from p p collisions at root s = 7 TeV by the ATLAS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb(-1). The spectra in dilepton invariant mass, missing transverse momentum and jet multiplicity are presented and compared to Standard Model predictions. In this event sample, no evidence is found for contributions beyond those of the Standard Model. Limits are set on the cross-section in a fiducial region for new sources of same-sign high-mass dilepton events in the ee, e mu and mu mu channels. Four models predicting same-sign dilepton signals are constrained: two descriptions of Majorana neutrinos, a cascade topology similar to supersymmetry or universal extra dimensions, and fourth generation d-type quarks. Assuming a new physics scale of 1 TeV, Majorana neutrinos produced by an effective operator V with masses below 460 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. A lower limit of 290 GeV is set at 95% confidence level on the mass of fourth generation d-type quarks
