Local head loss for uncoaxial drippers inserted in polyethylene pipes
Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de experimento conduzido para avaliar as perdas de carga localizadas em gotejados não coaxiais integrados a tubos de polietileno. As perdas de carga para diferentes vazões foram determinadas em quatro modelos de tubos-gotejadores, com dez repetições. Para cada vazão, a perda de carga localizada foi calculada pela diferença entre a perda de carga no tubo com emissor e a perda de carga contínua no tubo uniforme estimada pela equação de Darcy-Weisbach com o fator de atrito (f) previamente determinado. Aproximações matemáticas foram sugeridas para calcular hfe com base no coeficiente de carga cinética (K) e em um valor constante de comprimento equivalente (Le). Para os modelos de tubos-gotejadores estudados, a perda de carga localizada, expressa como percentagem da perda de carga total, aumentou com o aumento da razão de obstrução, variando de 24,5% a 50,8% para Ag/At = 0,221 e 0,429, respectivamente. A maior diferença percentual encontrada entre a perda de carga total calculada pelo método iterativo passo a passo e pelo uso de Le constante, calculado com a vazão de entrada na lateral, foi 5,5% para o gotejador não autocompensante. Para os gotejadores autocompensantes, as diferenças foram inferiores a 1,7%.In this paper, the results of an experimental investigation on local head losses from uncoaxial in-line emitters inserted into the pipe line are reported. Local losses corresponding to four different pipe-emitter combinations, with ten replications, were measured for a range of discharge values. For each discharge, the amount of local losses was calculated as the difference between the total measured head losses and the corresponding friction losses evaluated by the Darcy-Weisbach equation. Mathematical approaches were tested to calculate hfe based on the kinetic head coefficient (K) and constant equivalent length (Le). For the drip-line models examined, the amount of local losses, expressed as a percentage of the total losses, was found to grow with an increase in the obstruction degree. The percentage increased to 24.5% and 50.8%, respectively, for Ag/At = 0.221 and 0.429. The results of this experimental investigation indicated the practical validity of using a constant equivalent length (Le) to estimate the local head losses in a drip lateral line. The Physics of Kondo Impurities in Graphene
This article summarizes our understanding of the Kondo effect in graphene,
primarily from a theoretical perspective. We shall describe different ways to
create magnetic moments in graphene, either by adatom deposition or via
defects. For dilute moments, the theoretical description is in terms of
effective Anderson or Kondo impurity models coupled to graphene's Dirac
electrons. We shall discuss in detail the physics of these models, including
their quantum phase transitions and the effect of carrier doping, and confront
this with existing experimental data. Finally, we point out connections to
other quantum impurity problems, e.g., in unconventional superconductors,

Prevalence of peripheral arterial occlusive disease in patients referred to a tertiary care hospital in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, for coronary angiography
The presence of peripheral arterial occlusive disease increases the morbidity and mortality of patients with coronary artery disease. The objective of the present study was to calculate the prevalence of peripheral arterial occlusive disease in patients referred for coronary angiography. This prevalence study was carried out at the Hemodynamics Unit of Hospital Santa Isabel, Salvador, Brazil, from December 2004 to April 2005. After approval by the Ethics Committee of the hospital, 397 patients with angiographic signs of coronary artery disease were enrolled. Diagnosis of peripheral arterial occlusive disease was made using the ankle-brachial blood pressure index (£0.90). Statistical analyses were performed using the z test and a level of significance of a = 5%, 95%CI, the chi-square test and t-test, and multiple logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of peripheral arterial occlusive disease was 34.3% (95%CI: 29.4-38.9). Mean age was 65.7 ± 9.4 years for patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease, and 60.3 ± 9.8 years for patients without peripheral arterial occlusive disease (P = 0.0000003). The prevalence of peripheral arterial occlusive disease was 1.57 times greater in patients with hypertension (P = 0.007) and 2.91 times greater in patients with coronary stenosis ³50% (P = 0.002). Illiterate patients and those with little education had a 44% higher chance of presenting peripheral arterial occlusive disease probably as a result of public health prevention policies of limited effectiveness. Order and nFl Behavior in UCu4Pd
We have studied the role of disorder in the non-Fermi liquid system UCu4Pd
using annealing as a control parameter. Measurement of the lattice parameter
indicates that this procedure increases the crystallographic order by
rearranging the Pd atoms from the 16e to the 4c sites. We find that the low
temperature properties depend strongly on annealing. Whereas the non-Fermi
liquid behavior in the specific heat can be observed over a larger temperature
range after annealing, the clear non-Fermi liquid behavior of the resistivity
of the unannealed sample below 10 K disappears. We come to the conclusion that
this argues against the Kondo disorder model as an explanation for the
non-Fermi liquid properties of both as-prepared and annealed UCu4Pd
Susceptibility Inhomogeneity and Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior in Ce(Ru_{0.5}Rh_{0.5})_2Si_2
Magnetic susceptibility and muon spin rotation (\muSR) experiments have been
carried out to study the effect of structural disorder on the non-Fermi-liquid
(NFL) behavior of the heavy-fermion alloy Ce(Ru_{0.5}Rh_{0.5})_2Si_2. Analysis
of the bulk susceptibility in the framework of disorder-driven Griffiths-phase
and Kondo-disorder models for NFL behavior yields relatively narrow
distributions of characteristic spin fluctuation energies, in agreement with
\muSR linewidths that give the inhomogeneous spread in susceptibility. \muSR
and NMR data both indicate that disorder explains the "nearly NFL" behavior
observed above \sim2 K, but does not dominate the NFL physics found at low

Non-Fermi-Liquid Scaling in Ce(Ru_{0.5}Rh_{0.5})_2Si_2
We study the temperature and field dependence of the magnetic and transport
properties of the non-Fermi-liquid compound Ce(Ru_{1-x}Rh_x)_2Si_2 at x=0.5.
For fields 0.1T the experimental results show signatures of the
presence of Kondo-disorder, expected to be large at this concentration. For
larger fields, however, magnetic and transport properties are controlled by the
coupling of the conduction electrons to critical spin-fluctuations. The
temperature dependence of the susceptibility as well as the scaling properties
of the magnetoresistance are in very good agreement with the predictions of
recent dynamical mean-field theories of Kondo alloys close to a spin-glass

Disorder-to-order transition in the magnetic and electronic properties of URh_2Ge_2
We present a study of annealing effects on the physical properties of
tetragonal single--crystalline URh_2Ge_2. This system, which in as-grown form
was recently established as the first metallic 3D random-bond heavy-fermion
spin glass, is transformed by an annealing treatment into a long-range
antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered heavy-fermion compound. The transport
properties, which in the as-grown material were dominated by the structural
disorder, exhibit in the annealed material signs of typical metallic behavior
along the crystallographic a axis. From our study URh_2Ge_2 emerges as
exemplary material highlighting the role and relevance of structural disorder
for the properties of strongly correlated electron systems. We discuss the link
between the magnetic and electronic behavior and how they are affected by the
