Meio ambiente e arena pública: governança ambiental e suas implicações para as políticas públicas
This is the final version of the article. Available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.O quadro institucional da sociedade contemporânea se alterou, uma vez que a fronteira entre a esfera do público e do privado
diferentes atores
The Cytotoxic T Lymphocyte Antigen-4+49A/G Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Association With Visceral Leishmaniasis
Background: Several lines of evidence approve that innate and adaptive immunity play key roles in the defense against visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The polymorphism within the cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4) gene alters its expression. Objectives: The main aim of this study was to evaluate the polymorphism within the +49 position of the CTLA-4 gene of Iranian patients with VL in comparison with healthy controls. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 88 patients with clinical presentations of VL, who were seropositive for Leishmania (group 1), 86 patients without clinical presentations but seropositive (group 2), and 115 healthy controls (group 3) were assessed with respect to the CTLA-4 +49A/G polymorphism, using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The anti-Leishmania antibody titration was evaluated using an immunofluorescence method. Results: Our results indicated that both CTLA-4 +49A/G polymorphisms were significantly associated with VL. Conclusions: According to the results, the polymorphisms within the +49 position of CTLA-4 can be associated with VL and may be considered as risk factors for the disease
Severe hereditary spherocytosis and distal renal tubular acidosis associated with the total absence of band 3
Absence of band 3, associated with the mutation Coimbra (V488M) in the homozygous state, caused severe hereditary spherocytosis in a young child. Although prenatal testing was made available to the parents, it was declined. Because the fetus stopped moving near term, an emergency cesarean section was performed and a severely anemic, hydropic female baby was delivered. She was resuscitated and initially kept alive with respiratory assistance and hypertransfusion therapy. Cord blood smears revealed erythroblastosis, poikilocytosis, and red cells with stalk-like elongations. Band 3 and protein 4.2 were absent; spectrin, ankyrin, and glycophorin A were significantly reduced. Renal tubular acidosis was detected by the age of 3 months. Nephrocalcinosis appeared soon thereafter. After 3 years of follow-up the child is doing reasonably well on a regimen that includes regular blood transfusions and daily bicarbonate supplements. The long-term prognosis remains uncertain given the potential for hematologic and renal complications
B Cells Regulate Neutrophilia during Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection and BCG Vaccination by Modulating the Interleukin-17 Response
We have previously demonstrated that B cells can shape the immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, including the level of neutrophil infiltration and granulomatous inflammation at the site of infection. The present study examined the mechanisms by which B cells regulate the host neutrophilic response upon exposure to mycobacteria and how neutrophilia may influence vaccine efficacy. To address these questions, a murine aerosol infection tuberculosis (TB) model and an intradermal (ID) ear BCG immunization mouse model, involving both the μMT strain and B cell-depleted C57BL/6 mice, were used. IL (interleukin)-17 neutralization and neutrophil depletion experiments using these systems provide evidence that B cells can regulate neutrophilia by modulating the IL-17 response during M. tuberculosis infection and BCG immunization. Exuberant neutrophilia at the site of immunization in B cell-deficient mice adversely affects dendritic cell (DC) migration to the draining lymph nodes and attenuates the development of the vaccine-induced Th1 response. The results suggest that B cells are required for the development of optimal protective anti-TB immunity upon BCG vaccination by regulating the IL-17/neutrophilic response. Administration of sera derived from M. tuberculosis-infected C57BL/6 wild-type mice reverses the lung neutrophilia phenotype in tuberculous μMT mice. Together, these observations provide insight into the mechanisms by which B cells and humoral immunity modulate vaccine-induced Th1 response and regulate neutrophila during M. tuberculosis infection and BCG immunization. © 2013 Kozakiewicz et al
Drug-Induced Anaphylaxis: An Update on Epidemiology and Risk Factors
Drug hypersensitivity is one of the most frequent causes of anaphylaxis, particularly in adults and in hospitalized patients. Drug-induced anaphylaxis (DIA) is also associated with more severe outcomes than other anaphylaxis triggers, and drugs are responsible for the majority of deaths due to anaphylaxis. We here review the current knowledge on the incidence, prevalence, drugs involved, mortality, and mortality risk factors for DIA. The incidence of both anaphylaxis and DIA seems to be increasing worldwide. Antibiotics and analgesics are the most frequently reported triggers of DIA. However, the importance of other drug groups should be taken into account, especially in particular settings (e.g., peri-operative and oncology). The identification of risk factors, geographical variables, and drugs associated with higher risk for DIA may improve the outcomes of this entity.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Dilution versus pollution in watercourses affected by acid mine drainage: a graphic model for the Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain)
The aim of this study was to chemically characterize
the water quality impacts of the 88 acid mine drainage
(AMD) generating mines in the Spanish sector of the Iberian
Pyrite Belt (IPB). This was necessary because the Water
Framework Directive of the European Union and the hydrological
plans of the Tinto, Odiel, and Piedras river basins
require that water quality be improved enough to allow at
least some of the rivers in the IPB to sustain healthy fish
populations by 2027. The results indicate a clear decrease in
metals, arsenic, and sulfate concentrations and increased pH
between the AMD-sources and the river channels.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The association between fungi exposure and hypersensitivity pneumonitis: a systematic review
A systematic review of published studies focused on the association between hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) and fungi exposure was conducted on PubMed, following PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews. A total of 14 studies met the inclusion criteria but only 6 of these studies were eligible, as the remaining 8 represented case reports that were separately included for further discussion. HP is an interstitial lung disease (ILD) characterized by a hypersensitization response to inhalable antigens and represents 1.5% to 12% of all ILD in the European population. Several fungi species that populate the indoor environment have been associated with the incidence of HP upon cumulative exposure, with Penicillium spp and Aspergillus spp being the fungi species most frequently associated with the onset of disease. Although some studies have shown that avoiding exposure to causative HP fungi tends to improve patients’ symptoms, other studies were unable to identify the source of sensitization. More microbial exposure studies are needed to properly estimate the risk of HP development in the built environment. This study has been performed in the framework of the EXALAR 21 project, which was funded by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), through the Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Program, and by national funding from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the reference info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/FCT/9471 - RIDTI/PTDC/GES-AMB/30193/2017/PT (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030193, 02/SAICT/2017—Project n° 30193)
Monocarboxylate transporter 4 (MCT4) and CD147 overexpression is associated with poor prognosis in prostate cancer
BACKGROUND. Monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) are transmembrane proteins involved in the transport of monocarboxylates across the plasma membrane, which appear to play an important role in solid tumours, however the role of MCTs in prostate cancer is largely unknown. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the clinico-pathological value of monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) expression, namely MCT1, MCT2 and MCT4, together with CD147 and gp70 as MCT1/4 and MCT2 chaperones, respectively, in prostate carcinoma.
METHODS. Prostate tissues were obtained from 171 patients, who performed radical prostatectomy and 14 patients who performed cystoprostatectomy. Samples and clinico-pathological data were retrieved and organized into tissue microarray (TMAs) blocks. Protein expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry in neoplastic (n= 171), adjacent non-neoplastic tissues (n= 135), PIN lesions (n=40) and normal prostatic tissue (n=14). Protein expression was correlated with patients' clinicopathologic characteristics.
RESULTS. In the present study, a significant increase of MCT2 and MCT4 expression in the cytoplasm of tumour cells and a significant decrease in both MCT1 and CD147 expression in prostate tumour cells was observed when compared to normal tissue. All MCT isoforms and CD147 were expressed in PIN lesions. Importantly, for MCT2 and MCT4 the expression levels in PIN lesions were between normal and tumour tissue, which might indicate a role for these MCTs in the malignant transformation. Associations were found between MCT1, MCT4 and CD147 expressions and poor prognosis markers; importantly MCT4 and CD147 overexpression correlated with higher PSA levels, Gleason score and pT stage, as well as with perineural invasion and biochemical recurrence.
CONCLUSIONS. Our data provides novel evidence for the involvement of MCTs in prostate cancer. According to our results, we consider that MCT2 should be further explored as tumour marker and both MCT4 and CD147 as markers of poor prognosis in prostate cancer.NPG, CP and VMG received fellowships from the Portuguese Foundation for

Giant pilomatricoma in a patient with tuberous sclerosis, both diagnosed in the adult life.
Pilomatricoma is a relatively common benign skin neoplasm originating from the hair follicle matrix cells. β-Catenin is a subunit of the cadherin protein complex. It acts as an intracellular signal transducer that influences cell differentiation and proliferation. This protein was recently involved in the formation of hair follicle-related tumours, including pilomatricomas. Tuberous sclerosis (TS) is an inherited neurocutaneous disease, which is characterised by pleomorphic features involving many organs, hamartomas in multiple organ systems and by the fact that it is usually diagnosed early in life. We reported a case of a Caucasian patient with TS and a giant pilomatricoma, both diagnosed in the adult life
