Women's sexuality after termination of pregnancy in Hong Kong Chinese
Objective: Our aim is to determine sexuality after termination of pregnancy (TOP) in Hong Kong Chinese. Design: This was a prospective study using self-administered questionnaires given before and eight weeks after abortion. Subjects: Women over age 18 years old requesting TOP were invited to participate in the study during the period 6 December 2005 to 28 March 2006. Main outcome measures: Sexual function, couple relationship and psychological well-being like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were assessed. Contraception was also reviewed. Results: No significant change in the number of women who presented with sexual dysfunctions before and after abortion. However, women reported subjective decrease in sexual functions after TOP, ranging from 9.8% for those with increased vaginal pain to 24.5% for those with decreased sexual desire. Majority of them (74.8%) suffered from at least moderate degree of post-traumatic stress symptoms and 10.2% had symptoms suggestive of the presence of a PTSD. Significant associations were seen in subjective decrease of sexual functions with post-traumatic stress symptoms after termination of pregnancy. On the other hand, 41.6% felt less depressed after abortion. There was no significant change in couple relationship after abortion. Conclusion: Termination of pregnancy did not cause sexual dysfunctions. However, significant proportion of women did suffer from decreased sexual functions subjectively which may be due to stress related to unplanned pregnancy or the TOP. The abortion itself did not cause depression and women who had completed family were less depressed after abortion. Post-traumatic stress was prevalent in those having abortion and the symptoms were associated with the subjective decrease in sexual functions.published_or_final_versio
Streaming Algorithms for Submodular Function Maximization
We consider the problem of maximizing a nonnegative submodular set function
subject to a -matchoid
constraint in the single-pass streaming setting. Previous work in this context
has considered streaming algorithms for modular functions and monotone
submodular functions. The main result is for submodular functions that are {\em
non-monotone}. We describe deterministic and randomized algorithms that obtain
a -approximation using -space, where is
an upper bound on the cardinality of the desired set. The model assumes value
oracle access to and membership oracles for the matroids defining the

Collaborative development of diffraction-limited beamline optical systems at US DOE light sources
An ongoing collaboration among four US Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories has demonstrated key technology prototypes and software modeling tools required for new high-coherent flux beamline optical systems. New free electron laser (FEL) and diffraction-limited storage ring (DLSR) light sources demand wavefront preservation from source to sample to achieve and maintain optimal performance. Fine wavefront control was achieved using a novel, roomtemperature cooled mirror system called REAL (resistive element adjustable length) that combines cooling with applied, spatially variable auxiliary heating. Single-grating shearing interferometry (also called Talbot interferometry) and Hartmann wavefront sensors were developed and used for optical characterization and alignment on several beamlines, across a range of photon energies. Demonstrations of non-invasive hard x-ray wavefront sensing were performed using a thin diamond single-crystal as a beamsplitter

A Self-Reference False Memory Effect in the DRM Paradigm: Evidence from Eastern and Western Samples
It is well established that processing information in relation to oneself (i.e., selfreferencing) leads to better memory for that information than processing that same information in relation to others (i.e., other-referencing). However, it is unknown whether self-referencing also leads to more false memories than other-referencing. In the current two experiments with European and East Asian samples, we presented participants the Deese-Roediger/McDermott (DRM) lists together with their own name or other people’s name (i.e., “Trump” in Experiment 1 and “Li Ming” in Experiment 2). We found consistent results across the two experiments; that is, in the self-reference condition, participants had higher true and false memory rates compared to those in the other-reference condition. Moreover, we found that selfreferencing did not exhibit superior mnemonic advantage in terms of net accuracy compared to other-referencing and neutral conditions. These findings are discussed in terms of theoretical frameworks such as spreading activation theories and the fuzzytrace theory. We propose that our results reflect the adaptive nature of memory in the sense that cognitive processes that increase mnemonic efficiency may also increase susceptibility to associative false memories

Synchronisation and commonalities in metropolitan housing market cycles
This paper examines the degree of commonalities present in the cyclical behavior of the eight largest metropolitan housing markets in Australia. Using two techniques originally in the business cycle literature we consider the degree of synchronization present and secondly decompose the series’ into their permanent and cyclical components. Both empirical approaches reveal similar results. Sydney and Melbourne are closely related to each other and are relatively segmented from the smaller metropolitan areas. In contrast, there is substantial evidence of commonalities in the cyclical behavior of the remaining cities, especially those on the Eastern and Southern coasts of Australia
Clinical Performance of an Automated Reader in Interpreting Malaria Rapid Diagnostic Tests in Tanzania.
Parasitological confirmation of malaria is now recommended in all febrile patients by the World Health Organization (WHO) to reduce inappropriate use of anti-malarial drugs. Widespread implementation of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) is regarded as an effective strategy to achieve this goal. However, the quality of diagnosis provided by RDTs in remote rural dispensaries and health centres is not ideal. Feasible RDT quality control programmes in these settings are challenging. Collection of information regarding diagnostic events is also very deficient in low-resource countries. A prospective cohort of consecutive patients aged more than one year from both genders, seeking routine care for febrile episodes at dispensaries located in the Bagamoyo district of Tanzania, were enrolled into the study after signing an informed consent form. Blood samples were taken for thick blood smear (TBS) microscopic examination and malaria RDT (SD Bioline Malaria Antigen Pf/PanTM (SD RDT)). RDT results were interpreted by both visual interpretation and DekiReaderTM device. Results of visual interpretation were used for case management purposes. Microscopy was considered the "gold standard test" to assess the sensitivity and specificity of the DekiReader interpretation and to compare it to visual interpretation. In total, 1,346 febrile subjects were included in the final analysis. The SD RDT, when used in conjunction with the DekiReader and upon visual interpretation, had sensitivities of 95.3% (95% CI, 90.6-97.7) and 94.7% (95% CI, 89.8--97.3) respectively, and specificities of 94.6% (95% CI, 93.5--96.1) and 95.6% (95% CI, 94.2--96.6), respectively to gold standard. There was a high percentage of overall agreement between the two methods of interpretation. The sensitivity and specificity of the DekiReader in interpretation of SD RDTs were comparable to previous reports and showed high agreement to visual interpretation (>98%). The results of the study reflect the situation in real practice and show good performance characteristics of DekiReader on interpreting malaria RDTs in the hands of local laboratory technicians. They also suggest that a system like this could provide great benefits to the health care system. Further studies to look at ease of use by community health workers, and cost benefit of the system are warranted
