Improving the stability of organosiloxane smectic A liquid crystal random lasers using redox dopants

scattering devices are based upon binary mixtures that consist of an
organosiloxane smectic A LC and a wide temperature range nematogen LC. Both the temperature range
of the smectic A phase and t
he dielectric anisotropy of the binary mixture are increased compared with
that of the neat organosiloxane compound. In the latter case, the increase in the dielectric anisotropy
results in a reduction of the magnitude of the electric field required to ind
uce a clear state.
Furthermore, it is found that the electric field threshold continues to decrease with increasing
concentration of the nematic compound. For the random laser devices, the pyrromethene 597 laser
dye was added to a mixture that was optimize
d for scattering and it was found that the absorption
properties of the dye becomes unstable in the presence of the electro
-
hydrodynamic instabilities that
are required to generate scattering in the LC cells. This is believed to be due to electro
-
chemical
reactions that occur at the electrodes. To avoid dye degradation and ensure repeatable electro
-
optic
behaviour, a reduction
-
oxidation (redox) couple is dispersed within the dye
-
doped binary mixture. It is
shown that the addition of redox dopants helps to s
tabilize the dye in the scattering mixtures, and also
increases the long
-
term repeatability of the scattering behaviour. Finally, we conclude by
characterizing the random laser emission of the dye
-
doped binary mixture and demonstrate improved

Hybrid graphene nematic liquid crystal light scattering device.
A hybrid graphene nematic liquid crystal (LC) light scattering device is presented. This device exploits the inherent poly-crystallinity of chemical vapour deposited (CVD) graphene films to induce directional anchoring and formation of LC multi-domains. This thereby enables efficient light scattering without the need for crossed polarisers or separate alignment layers/additives. The hybrid LC device exhibits switching thresholds at very low electric fields (< 1 V μm(-1)) and repeatable, hysteresis free characteristics. This exploitation of LC alignment effects on CVD graphene films enables a new generation of highly efficient nematic LC scattering displays as well as many other possible applications.Funding from the EPSRC (Grant No. EP/K016636/1, GRAPHTED) is acknowledged. Spectral Pattern Recognition by a Two-Layer Perceptron: Effects of Training Set Size
Pattern recognition in urban areas is one of the most challenging issues in
classifying satellite remote sensing data. Parametric pixel-by-pixel classification
algorithms tend to perform poorly in this context. This is because urban areas
comprise a complex spatial assemblage of disparate land cover types - including
built structures, numerous vegetation types, bare soil and water bodies. Thus,
there is a need for more powerful spectral pattern recognition techniques,
utilizing pixel-by-pixel spectral information as the basis for automated urban
land cover detection. This paper adopts the multi-layer perceptron classifier
suggested and implemented in [5]. The objective of this study is to analyse the
performance and stability of this classifier - trained and tested for supervised
classification (8 a priori given land use classes) of a Landsat-5 TM image
(270 x 360 pixels) from the city of Vienna and its northern surroundings
- along with varying the training data set in the single-training-site case.
The performance is measured in terms of total classification, map user's and
map producer's accuracies. In addition, the stability with initial parameter
conditions, classification error matrices, and error curves are analysed in some

Emotional intelligence buffers the effect of physiological arousal on dishonesty
We studied the emotional processes that allow people to balance two competing desires: benefitting from dishonesty and keeping a positive self-image. We recorded physiological arousal (skin conductance and heart rate) during a computer card game in which participants could cheat and fail to report a certain card when presented on the screen to avoid losing their money. We found that higher skin conductance corresponded to lower cheating rates. Importantly, emotional intelligence regulated this effect; participants with high emotional intelligence were less affected by their physiological reactions than those with low emotional intelligence. As a result, they were more likely to profit from dishonesty. However, no interaction emerged between heart rate and emotional intelligence. We suggest that the ability to manage and control emotions can allow people to overcome the tension between doing right or wrong and license them to bend the rules
A blind accuracy assessment of computer-modeled forensic facial reconstruction using computed tomography data from live subjects.
A computer modeling system for facial reconstruction has been developed that employs a touch-based application to create anatomically accurate facial models focusing on skeletal detail. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the system and illustrates its accuracy and reliability with a blind study using computed tomography (CT) data of living individuals. Three-dimensional models of the skulls of two white North American adults (one male, one female) were imported into the computer system. Facial reconstructions were produced by two practitioners following the Manchester method. Two posters were produced, each including a face pool of five surface model images and the facial reconstruction. The face pool related to the sex, age, and ethnic group of the target individual and included the surface model image of the target individual. Fifty-two volunteers were asked to choose the face from the face pool that most resembled each reconstruction. Both reconstructions received majority percentage hit rates that were at least 50% greater than any other face in the pool. The combined percentage hit rate was 50% above chance (70%). A quantitative comparison of the facial morphology between the facial reconstructions and the CT scan models of the subjects was carried out using Rapidform(™) 2004 PP2-RF4. The majority of the surfaces of the facial reconstructions showed less than 2.5 mm error and 90% of the male face and 75% of the female face showed less than 5 mm error. Many of the differences between the facial reconstructions and the facial scans were probably the result of positional effects caused during the CT scanning procedure, especially on the female subject who had a fatter face than the male subject. Influenza nucleoprotein delivered with aluminium salts protects mice from an influenza virus that expresses an altered nucleoprotein sequence
Influenza virus poses a difficult challenge for protective immunity. This virus is adept at altering its surface proteins, the proteins that are the targets of neutralizing antibody. Consequently, each year a new vaccine must be developed to combat the current recirculating strains. A universal influenza vaccine that primes specific memory cells that recognise conserved parts of the virus could prove to be effective against both annual influenza variants and newly emergent potentially pandemic strains. Such a vaccine will have to contain a safe and effective adjuvant that can be used in individuals of all ages. We examine protection from viral challenge in mice vaccinated with the nucleoprotein from the PR8 strain of influenza A, a protein that is highly conserved across viral subtypes. Vaccination with nucleoprotein delivered with a universally used and safe adjuvant, composed of insoluble aluminium salts, provides protection against viruses that either express the same or an altered version of nucleoprotein. This protection correlated with the presence of nucleoprotein specific CD8 T cells in the lungs of infected animals at early time points after infection. In contrast, immunization with NP delivered with alum and the detoxified LPS adjuvant, monophosphoryl lipid A, provided some protection to the homologous viral strain but no protection against infection by influenza expressing a variant nucleoprotein. Together, these data point towards a vaccine solution for all influenza A subtypes
Women’s experiences of receiving care for pelvic organ prolapse: a qualitative study
Background Pelvic organ prolapse is a common urogenital condition affecting 41–50% of women over the age of 40. To achieve early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, it is important that care is sensitive to and meets women’s needs, throughout their patient journey. This study explored women’s experiences of seeking diagnosis and treatment for prolapse and their needs and priorities for improving person-centred care. Methods Twenty-two women receiving prolapse care through urogynaecology services across three purposefully selected NHS UK sites took part in three focus groups and four telephone interviews. A topic guide facilitated discussions about women’s experiences of prolapse, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, interactions with healthcare professionals, overall service delivery, and ideals for future services to meet their needs. Data were analysed thematically. Results Three themes emerged relating to women’s experiences of a) Evaluating what is normal b) Hobson’s choice of treatment decisions, and c) The trial and error of treatment and technique. Women often delayed seeking help for their symptoms due to lack of awareness, embarrassment and stigma. When presented to GPs, their symptoms were often dismissed and unaddressed until they became more severe. Women reported receiving little or no choice in treatment decisions. Choices were often influenced by health professionals’ preferences which were subtly reflected through the framing of the offer. Women’s embodied knowledge of their condition and treatment was largely unheeded, resulting in decisions that were inconsistent with women’s preferences and needs. Physiotherapy based interventions were reported as helping women regain control over their symptoms and life. A need for greater awareness of prolapse and physiotherapy interventions among women, GPs and consultants was identified alongside greater focus on prevention, early diagnosis and regular follow-up. Greater choice and involvement in treatment decision making was desired. Conclusions As prolapse treatment options expand to include more conservative choices, greater awareness and education is needed among women and professionals about these as a first line treatment and preventive measure, alongside a multi-professional team approach to treatment decision making. Women presenting with prolapse symptoms need to be listened to by the health care team, offered better information about treatment choices, and supported to make a decision that is right for them
Potential climatic transitions with profound impact on Europe
We discuss potential transitions of six climatic subsystems with large-scale impact on Europe, sometimes denoted as tipping elements. These are the ice sheets on Greenland and West Antarctica, the Atlantic thermohaline circulation, Arctic sea ice, Alpine glaciers and northern hemisphere stratospheric ozone. Each system is represented by co-authors actively publishing in the corresponding field. For each subsystem we summarize the mechanism of a potential transition in a warmer climate along with its impact on Europe and assess the likelihood for such a transition based on published scientific literature. As a summary, the ‘tipping’ potential for each system is provided as a function of global mean temperature increase which required some subjective interpretation of scientific facts by the authors and should be considered as a snapshot of our current understanding. <br/
