Using Information and Communication Technologies for Family Communication and Its Association With Family Well-Being in Hong Kong: FAMILY Project
Background: Family communication is central to the family and its functioning. It is a mutual process in which family members create, share, and regulate meaning. Advancement and proliferation of information and communication technologies (ICTs) continues to change methods of family communication. However, little is known about the use of different methods for family communication and the influence on family well-being. Objective: We investigated the sociodemographic factors associated with different methods of family communication and how they are associated with perceived family harmony, happiness, and health (3Hs) among Chinese adults in Hong Kong. Methods: Data came from a territory-wide probability-based telephone survey using the Family and Health Information Trend survey (FHInTs). Frequency of family communication using different methods (ie, face-to-face, phone, instant messaging [IM], social media sites, and email) were recoded and classified as frequent (always/sometimes) and nonfrequent (seldom/never) use. Family well-being was measured using 3 questions of perceived family harmony, happiness, and health with higher scores indicating better family well-being. Adjusted odds ratios for family communication methods by sociodemographic characteristics and adjusted beta coefficients for family well-being by communication methods were calculated. Results: A total of 1502 adults were surveyed. Face-to-face (94.85%, 1408/1484) was the most frequent means of communication followed by phone (78.08%, 796/1484), IM (53.64%, 796/1484), social media sites (17.60%, 261/1484), and email (13.39%, 198/1484). Younger age was associated with the use of phone, IM, and social media sites for family communication. Higher educational attainment was associated with more frequent use of all modes of communication, whereas higher family income was only significantly associated with more frequent use of IM and email (P=.001). Face-to-face (beta 0.65, 95% CI 0.33-0.97) and phone use (beta 0.20, 95% CI 0.02-0.38) for family communication were associated with significantly higher levels of perceived family well-being. Conclusions: Socioeconomic disparities in using these information and communication technologies (ICT) methods for family communication were observed. Although traditional methods remain as the main platform for family communication and were associated with better family well-being, a notable proportion of respondents are using new ICT methods, which were not associated with perceived family well-being. Because ICTs will continue to diversify modes of family communication, more research is needed to understand the impact of ICTs on family communication and well-being.published_or_final_versio

Carbon storage and DNA absorption in allophanic soils and paleosols
Andisols and andic paleosols dominated by the nanocrystalline mineral allophane sequester large amounts of carbon (C), attributable mainly to its chemical bonding with charged hydroxyl groups on the surface of allophane together with its physical protection in nanopores within and between allophane nanoaggregates. C near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra for a New Zealand Andisol (Tirau series) showed that the organic matter (OM) mainly comprises quinonic, aromatic, aliphatic, and carboxylic C. In different buried horizons from several other Andisols, C contents varied but the C species were similar, attributable to pedogenic processes operating during developmental upbuilding, downward leaching, or both. The presence of OM in natural allophanic soils weakened the adsorption of DNA on clay; an adsorption isotherm experiment involving humic acid (HA) showed that HA-free synthetic allophane adsorbed seven times more DNA than HA-rich synthetic allophane. Phosphorus X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra for salmonsperm DNA and DNA-clay complexes indicated that DNA was bound to the allophane clay through the phosphate group, but it is not clear if DNA was chemically bound to the surface of the allophane or to OM, or both. We plan more experiments to investigate interactions among DNA, allophane (natural and synthetic), and OM. Because DNA shows a high affinity to allophane, we are studying the potential to reconstruct late Quaternary palaeoenvironments by attempting to extract and characterise ancient DNA from allophanic paleosol
Linear magnetoresistance in commercial n-type silicon due to inhomogeneous doping
Free electron theory tells us that resistivity is independent of magnetic
field. In fact, most observations match the semiclassical prediction of a
magnetoresistance that is quadratic at low fields before saturating. However, a
non-saturating linear magnetoresistance has been observed in exotic
semiconductors such as silver chalcogenides, lightly-doped InSb, N-doped InAs,
MnAs-GaAs composites, PrFeAsO, and epitaxial graphene. Here we report the
observation of a large linear magnetoresistance in the ohmic regime in
commonplace commercial n-type silicon wafer. It is well-described by a
classical model of spatially fluctuating donor densities, and may be amplified
by altering the aspect ratio of the sample to enhance current-jetting:
increasing the width tenfold increased the magnetoresistance at 8 T from 445 %
to 4707 % at 35 K. This physical picture may well offer insights into the large
magnetoresistances recently observed in n-type and p-type Si in the non-ohmic

The mu problem and sneutrino inflation
We consider sneutrino inflation and post-inflation cosmology in the singlet
extension of the MSSM with approximate Peccei-Quinn(PQ) symmetry, assuming that
supersymmetry breaking is mediated by gauge interaction. The PQ symmetry is
broken by the intermediate-scale VEVs of two flaton fields, which are
determined by the interplay between radiative flaton soft masses and higher
order terms. Then, from the flaton VEVs, we obtain the correct mu term and the
right-handed(RH) neutrino masses for see-saw mechanism. We show that the RH
sneutrino with non-minimal gravity coupling drives inflation, thanks to the
same flaton coupling giving rise to the RH neutrino mass. After inflation,
extra vector-like states, that are responsible for the radiative breaking of
the PQ symmetry, results in thermal inflation with the flaton field, solving
the gravitino problem caused by high reheating temperature. Our model predicts
the spectral index to be n_s\simeq 0.96 due to the additional efoldings from
thermal inflation. We show that a right dark matter abundance comes from the
gravitino of 100 keV mass and a successful baryogenesis is possible via
