    Productivity and Profitability of Turmeric (Curcuma longa) + Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) Intercropping System for Marginal Farmers in North-Western Part of Bangladesh

    The agroecological practice of intercropping, meaning farming of two or more crop simultaneously in the same field has recently reaped renewed interest for developing more sustainable cropping and food systems. This technology gained immense interest to marginal farmers of Bangladesh for better economic return from small parcel of their cultivable land. This study evaluated the variants of intercropping system of turmeric (Curcuma longa) + okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) having yield advantage and profitability. The study was conducted during the crop season of 2017 and 2018 at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh. Five intercropping combination, viz T1 = 100% turmeric + 100% okra, T2 = 100% turmeric + 90% okra, T3 = 50% turmeric + 50% okra, T4 = sole turmeric (100%), T5 = sole okra (100%) were studied. The performance of various treatment combination was evaluated based on land equivalent ratio (LER), competitive ratio (CR), monetary advantage index (MAI) and system productivity index (SPI). The findings revealed that intercropping of okra did not affect the rhizome development stage. The T1 and T2 treatment gave 21.85 and 21.59 t ha-1 rhizome yield of turmeric, respectively. Besides, intercropping of okra @ 100 and 90% population (T1 and T2) enhanced 13% and 11% rhizome yield, respectively than the monoculture yield (19.38 t ha-1). However, the 100% turmeric + 100% okra intercropping system exhibited maximum turmeric equivalent yield (35.43 t ha-1), LER (2.12), MAI (4558.61 US$ ha-1), and SPI (44.39). Intercropping indices recommended a positive association of turmeric and okra crops. The study discovered that okra could be introduced as an intercrop with turmeric to increase cropping area and enhance profitability of marginal growers

    Functional genome-wide siRNA screen identifies KIAA0586 as mutated in Joubert syndrome

    Defective primary ciliogenesis or cilium stability forms the basis of human ciliopathies, including Joubert syndrome (JS), with defective cerebellar vermis development. We performed a high-content genome wide siRNA screen to identify genes regulating ciliogenesis as candidates for JS. We analyzed results with a supervised learning approach, using SYSCILIA gold standard, Cildb3.0, a centriole siRNA screen and the GTex project, identifying 591 likely candidates. Intersection of this data with whole exome results from 145 individuals with unexplained JS identified six families with predominantly compound heterozygous mutations in KIAA0586. A c.428del base deletion in 0.1% of the general population was found in trans with a second mutation in an additional set of 9 of 163 unexplained JS patients. KIAA0586 is an orthologue of chick Talpid3, required for ciliogenesis and sonic hedgehog signaling. Our results uncover a relatively high frequency cause for JS and contribute a list of candidates for future gene discoveries in ciliopathies

    Production of bioethanol through enzymatic hydrolysis of potato

    Due to gradual decrease in petroleum resources and impacts of these wastes on the environment, there is a need to utilize the wastes of potatoes to get wealth out of wastes and clean the environment. In this study, potato wastes were investigated as source of bioethanol. 100 g potato powder was mixed with 1 L distilled water in two separate beakers to form potato slurry. Bioethanol production was investigated using effect of pH, temperature and mixture of digesting enzymes after scarification and fermentation. The results show that significant (p<0.05) bioethanol was produced at 35°C and at pH 5.5. This investigation also reveals that mixture of enzymes significantly enhanced (p<0.05) bioethanol production compared to non treated mixture. Maximum bioethanol productions were due to the presence of sugar in potatoes.Key words: Bioethanol, potato, ph, temperature, liquefaction

    Assessment of Variability in Hydrological Droughts Using the Improved Innovative Trend Analysis Method

    The use of hydro-climatological time series to identify patterns is essential for comprehending climate change and extreme events such as drought. Hence, in this study, hydrological drought variability based on the standard drought index (SDI) using DrinC was investigated at ten (10) hydrological stations in the Upper Indus River Basin (UIRB) of Pakistan on a monthly timescale for a period of 1961–2018. Moreover, the applicability of the improved innovative trend analysis by Sen Slope method (referred hereafter as the IITA) method was evaluated in comparison with innovative trend analysis (ITA) and Mann–Kendall (MK). The findings demonstrated a significant decreasing trend in the hydrological drought from October to March; on the other hand, from April through September, a significant increasing trend was observed. In addition to that, the consistency of the outcomes across the three trend analysis methods was also observed in most of the cases, with some discrepancies in trend direction, such as at Kharmong station. Conclusively, consistency of results in all three trend analysis methods showed that the IITA method is reliable and effective due to its capability to investigate the trends in low, median, and high values of hydrometeorological timeseries with graphical representation.     Second trimester uterine rupture: lesson learned

    ntroduction: Uterine rupture is a rare obstetrics catastrophic especially if it occurs during early pregnancy. We experienced three cases of ruptured uterus in the second trimester that first line doctors and obstetrician could learn lessons from. Objectives: To study the presentations and outcome of uterine rupture in the second trimester. Methodology: A retrospective review of uterine rupture in Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan from the 1st of April 2010 to the 1st of April 2011. Data obtained from case records, histopathological and autopsy reports. Result: There were 3 cases of uterine rupture. First case, uterine rupture at 15 weeks post sexual intercourse, undiagnosed until postmortem. Second case: ruptured uterus at 24 week diagnosed at laparotomy with the indication of failed medical termination for fetal anomaly. Third case: ruptured uterus at 21 weeks following abdominal massage with initial diagnosis of acute gastroentritis. The final diagnosis was ruptured uterus secondary to placenta percreta, related to medical induction and interstitial pregnancy respectively. Conclusion: Rupture uterus should be considered with or without any risk factors regardless of the gestational age whenever any impression of hemoperitoneum. Intensive surgical method would be needed for accurate diagnosis and immediate management even in early pregnancy is a life saving

    An Integrated Antenna System for 4G and Millimeter-Wave 5G Future Handheld Devices

    In this work, an integrated antenna system with Defected Ground Structure (DGS) is presented for Fourth Generation (4G) and millimeter (mm)-wave Fifth Generation (5G) wireless applications and handheld devices. The proposed design with overall dimensions of 110 mm x 75 mm is modeled on 0.508 mm thick Rogers RT/Duroid 5880 substrate. Radiating structure consists of antenna arrays excited by the T-shape 1 x 2 power divider/combiner. Dual bands for 4G centered at 3.8 GHz and 5.5 GHz are attained, whereas the 10-dB impedance bandwidth of 24.4 - 29.3 GHz is achieved for the 5G antenna array. In addition, a peak gain of 5.41 dBi is demonstrated across the operating bandwidth of the 4G antenna array. Similarly, for the 5G mm-wave configuration the attained peak gain is 10.29 dBi. Moreover, significant isolation is obtained between the two antenna modules ensuring efficient dual-frequency band operation using a single integrated solution. To endorse the concept, antenna prototype is fabricated and far-field measurements are procured. Simulated and measured results exhibit coherence. Also the proposed design is investigated for the beam steering capability of the mm-wave 5G antenna array using CST(R)MWS(R). The demonstrated structure offers various advantages including compactness, wide bandwidth, high gain, and planar configuration. Hence, the attained radiation characteristics prove the suitability of the proposed design for the current and future wireless handheld devices

    Prognostic model to predict postoperative acute kidney injury in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery based on a national prospective observational cohort study.

    Background: Acute illness, existing co-morbidities and surgical stress response can all contribute to postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery. The aim of this study was prospectively to develop a pragmatic prognostic model to stratify patients according to risk of developing AKI after major gastrointestinal surgery. Methods: This prospective multicentre cohort study included consecutive adults undergoing elective or emergency gastrointestinal resection, liver resection or stoma reversal in 2-week blocks over a continuous 3-month period. The primary outcome was the rate of AKI within 7 days of surgery. Bootstrap stability was used to select clinically plausible risk factors into the model. Internal model validation was carried out by bootstrap validation. Results: A total of 4544 patients were included across 173 centres in the UK and Ireland. The overall rate of AKI was 14·2 per cent (646 of 4544) and the 30-day mortality rate was 1·8 per cent (84 of 4544). Stage 1 AKI was significantly associated with 30-day mortality (unadjusted odds ratio 7·61, 95 per cent c.i. 4·49 to 12·90; P < 0·001), with increasing odds of death with each AKI stage. Six variables were selected for inclusion in the prognostic model: age, sex, ASA grade, preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate, planned open surgery and preoperative use of either an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or an angiotensin receptor blocker. Internal validation demonstrated good model discrimination (c-statistic 0·65). Discussion: Following major gastrointestinal surgery, AKI occurred in one in seven patients. This preoperative prognostic model identified patients at high risk of postoperative AKI. Validation in an independent data set is required to ensure generalizability

    Response rates of standard interferon therapy in chronic HCV patients of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Interferon based therapy is used to eradicate the Hepatitis C Virus from the bodies of the infected individuals. HCV is highly prevalent in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) that is why it is important to determine the response of standard interferon based therapy in Chronic HCV patients of the region.</p> <p>Study design</p> <p>A total of 174 patients were selected for interferon based therapy. The patients were selected from four different regions of KPK. After confirmation of active HCV infection by Real Time PCR, standard interferon with ribavirn was given to patients for 6 months. After completion of therapy, end of treatment virologic response (ETR) was calculated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Out of total 174 patients, 130 (74.71%) showed ETR and 44 (25.28%) did not show ETR. In district Bunir, out of 52 patients, 36 (69.23%) showed ETR and 16 (30.79%) did not show ETR. In district Mardan, out of the total 74 patients, 66 (89.18%) were negative for HCV RNA and 8 (10.81%) were resistant to therapy. In Peshawar, out of 22, 16 (60%) were negative and 6 (40%) were positive for HCV RNA at the end of 6 months therapy. In the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA), out of 18 only 10 (55.5%) were negative and 8 (44.45%) were positive for active HCV infection.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>It is concluded that the response of antiviral therapy against HCV infection in chronic HCV patients of KPK province is 74.71%. The high response rate may be due to the prevalence of IFN-responsive HCV genotypes (2 and 3) in KPK.</p
