    Study on Clinico Etiological Profile on Thrombocytosis in Children

    Background: With the increased use of electronic cell counters and routine inclusion of platelet counts in blood tests, thrombocytosis is more commonly detected incidentally. Elevated platelet counts have become an important clinical consideration in diagnosing various pathological and physiological conditions. Aims and Objectives: Our aim is to research the fundamental causes of thrombocytosis and its clinical manifestations in our pediatric group. Objectives: study the clinico-etiological profile of thrombocytosis in children. Secondary objectives: evaluate platelet parameters in primary and secondary thrombocytosis, and study complications associated with thrombocytosis. Results: Among 200 children studied, 84 (42%) were female and 116 (58%) were male, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.3:1. The mean age was 3.54 years (SD 3.79), primarily between 1-5 years. Fever was the most common symptom (73.5%), followed by cough (51.5%), fast breathing (31%), progressive pallor (23.5%), and gastrointestinal symptoms (16%). Other symptoms included joint swelling (13.5%), rash (3.5%), anasarca (3.5%), and abnormal body movements (4%). In this study, 73.5% had mild thrombocytosis, 15.5% had moderate, and 5.5% had severe/extreme thrombocytosis. Significant correlations were found between thrombocytosis severity, total leukocyte count, and CRP positivity (p=0.01). Mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width decreased with higher platelet counts (p<0.01). Anemia was common (66% had pallor), but hemoglobin levels did not correlate with thrombocytosis severity (p=0.29). All cases were reactive thrombocytosis, mostly due to infections (69.5%), with respiratory infections being most frequent. Other causes included iron deficiency anemia (14%) and autoimmune disorders (7.5%). Conclusion: Thrombocytosis is common in children, often benign and reactive to conditions like trauma, surgery, infections, or iron deficiency. True myeloproliferative thrombocytosis is rare, affecting 1 in a million. Reactive thrombocytosis usually doesn’t lead to complications. Platelet indices are useful biomarkers for diagnosing and prognosticating infections

    Search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √ s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses 20.3 fb−1 of √ s = 8 TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT > 120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between Emiss T > 150 GeV and Emiss T > 700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model.     Measuring Brand-Related Content in Social Media: A Socialization Theory Perspective

    Purpose- Building on consumer socialization theory, this study examined antecedents and consequences of generating and sharing brand-related content on social media in a restaurant context. Design/methodology/approach- A scale development process was undertaken to develop the scale for brand-related user-generated content. Then we tested the antecedents and consequences of brand-related user-generated content using 375 responses obtained through a mall-intercept survey. The hypotheses were tested using structural equation modelling with AMOS. Findings- Study findings revealed that age, time on Facebook, number of Facebook friends, Facebook usage intensity, and need for self-enhancement were key antecedents of both the generation and sharing of brand-related user-generated content. The results also indicated that gender, race, and need for self-affirmation were not significantly related to generating and sharing brand-related user-generated content. Both generating and sharing brand-related user-generated content were positively associated with attitude and intentions toward the restaurants. Originality/value- This study is the first to develop a brand-related user-generated content scale through a rigorous scale development process. It thus contributes to consumer socialization theory literature in considering social media as a socialization agent. The findings provide valuable insights for both academicians and social media managers and aid in enhancing brand-related user-generated content

    Ethmoidal osteoid osteoma with orbital and intracranial extension – a case report

    BACKGROUND: Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone neoplasm which is seen in the long bones of appendicular skeleton. It is rarely seen in the cranium. Skull base osteoid osteoma is extremely rare and has been anecdotally reported. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors report a case of a large osteoid osteoma of the ethmoid with intraorbital and intracranial extension in a 33 year old male patient. He presented with loss of vision in the left eye. The intra-cranial extension was excised through a single burr-hole fronto-orbitotomy. The ethmoid and orbital portions were approached and excised through a Weber-Ferguson incision and inferior orbitotomy. Radical excision of the tumor could thus be achieved through a craniofacial approach. CONCLUSION: Although benign and rare, skull base osteoid osteoma can present with neurological deficit due to its mass effect and involvement of vital structures. A multispeciality team approach is advisable in such cases if radical excision is to be achieved. A craniofacial approach made radical single stage excision of this multicompartmental osteoid osteoma possible with an uneventful postoperative period

    Measurement of the t¯tZ and t¯tW cross sections in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A measurement of the associated production of a top-quark pair (t¯t) with a vector boson (W, Z) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is presented, using 36.1  fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected in channels with two same- or opposite-sign leptons (electrons or muons), three leptons or four leptons, and each channel is further divided into multiple regions to maximize the sensitivity of the measurement. The t¯tZ and t¯tW production cross sections are simultaneously measured using a combined fit to all regions. The best-fit values of the production cross sections are σt¯tZ=0.95±0.08stat±0.10syst pb and σt¯tW=0.87±0.13stat±0.14syst pb in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. The measurement of the t¯tZ cross section is used to set constraints on effective field theory operators which modify the t¯tZ vertex

    Effect of Kohl-Chikni Dawa – a compound ophthalmic formulation of Unani medicine on naphthalene-induced cataracts in rats

    BACKGROUND: Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide, accounting for 13-27% of cases. Kohl-Chikni Dawa (KCD) is reputed for its beneficial effects in the treatment of premature cataracts. However, its efficacy is yet to be tested. To investigate the rationality of the therapeutic use of Kohl-Chikni Dawa (KCD) in Unani medicine. METHODS: The effect of Kohl-Chikni Dawa eye drops on naphthalene-induced cataracts in rats was investigated by slit-lamp biomicroscopic analysis. The normal group of experimental animals was administered with mineral oil (orally), while other groups were given naphthalene (orally) along with local application of KCD eye drops (once and twice daily), placebo and distilled water (twice daily). Initial morphological changes of the lenses were observed twice a week for two weeks, and thereafter once a week for four weeks. RESULTS: Local application of KCD (twice daily) caused significant reduction in the lens opacification after 2 to 4 weeks of naphthalene administration. CONCLUSION: KCD eye drops may have the potential to delay progression of naphthalene-induced cataracts in rats

    The Saccharomyces cerevisiae Histone Chaperone Rtt106 Mediates the Cell Cycle Recruitment of SWI/SNF and RSC to the HIR-Dependent Histone Genes

    In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, three out of the four histone gene pairs (HTA1-HTB1, HHT1-HHF1, and HHT2-HHF2) are regulated by the HIR co-repressor complex. The histone chaperone Rtt106 has recently been shown to be present at these histone gene loci throughout the cell cycle in a HIR- and Asf1-dependent manner and involved in their transcriptional repression. The SWI/SNF and RSC chromatin remodeling complexes are both recruited to the HIR-dependent histone genes; SWI/SNF is required for their activation in S phase, whereas RSC is implicated in their repression outside of S phase. Even though their presence at the histone genes is dependent on the HIR complex, their specific recruitment has not been well characterized. In this study we focused on characterizing the role played by the histone chaperone Rtt106 in the cell cycle-dependent recruitment of SWI/SNF and RSC complexes to the histone genes.Using GST pull-down and co-immunoprecipitation assays, we showed that Rtt106 physically interacts with both the SWI/SNF and RSC complexes in vitro and in vivo. We then investigated the function of this interaction with respect to the recruitment of these complexes to HIR-dependent histone genes. Using chromatin immunoprecipitation assays (ChIP), we found that Rtt106 is important for the recruitment of both SWI/SNF and RSC complexes to the HIR-dependent histone genes. Furthermore, using synchronized cell cultures, we showed by ChIP assays that the Rtt106-dependent SWI/SNF recruitment to these histone gene loci is cell cycle regulated and restricted to late G1 phase just before the peak of histone gene expression in S phase.Overall, these data strongly suggest that the interaction between the histone chaperone Rtt106 and both the SWI/SNF and RSC chromatin remodeling complexes is important for the cell cycle regulated recruitment of these two complexes to the HIR-dependent histone genes

    Omnichannel Value Chain: Mapping Digital Technologies for Channel Integration Activities

    In order to provide a seamless customer experience, researchers and practitioners have proposed creation of an omnichannel retailing environment by integrating online and offline channels. Channel integration necessitates use of digital technologies and there are myriads of technological solutions available. However, retailers are struggling with selection and implementation of suitable technologies to add value through channel integration. Despite the strong practical need, this issue has not been effectively addressed in the academic literature. This paper presents an omnichannel value chain underpinned by Porter’s value chain model. We identify ten channel integration activities for value creation by carrying out a synthesis of current research on omnichannel retailing. Enabling digital technologies are then mapped to these activities using technology implementation examples and provide a guideline for retailers to select appropriate technologies for the identified value creation activities
