Honeybee Colony Vibrational Measurements to Highlight the Brood Cycle
Insect pollination is of great importance to crop production worldwide and honey bees are amongst its chief facilitators. Because of the decline of managed colonies, the use of sensor technology is growing in popularity and it is of interest to develop new methods which can more accurately and less invasively assess honey bee colony status. Our approach is to use accelerometers to measure vibrations in order to provide information on colony activity and development. The accelerometers provide amplitude and frequency information which is recorded every three minutes and analysed for night time only. Vibrational data were validated by comparison to visual inspection data, particularly the brood development. We show a strong correlation between vibrational amplitude data and the brood cycle in the vicinity of the sensor. We have further explored the minimum data that is required, when frequency information is also included, to accurately predict the current point in the brood cycle. Such a technique should enable beekeepers to reduce the frequency with which visual inspections are required, reducing the stress this places on the colony and saving the beekeeper time
On directed information theory and Granger causality graphs
Directed information theory deals with communication channels with feedback.
When applied to networks, a natural extension based on causal conditioning is
needed. We show here that measures built from directed information theory in
networks can be used to assess Granger causality graphs of stochastic
processes. We show that directed information theory includes measures such as
the transfer entropy, and that it is the adequate information theoretic
framework needed for neuroscience applications, such as connectivity inference

Vortices in polariton OPO superfluids
This chapter reviews the occurrence of quantised vortices in polariton
fluids, primarily when polaritons are driven in the optical parametric
oscillator (OPO) regime. We first review the OPO physics, together with both
its analytical and numerical modelling, the latter being necessary for the
description of finite size systems. Pattern formation is typical in systems
driven away from equilibrium. Similarly, we find that uniform OPO solutions can
be unstable to the spontaneous formation of quantised vortices. However,
metastable vortices can only be injected externally into an otherwise stable
symmetric state, and their persistence is due to the OPO superfluid properties.
We discuss how the currents charactering an OPO play a crucial role in the
occurrence and dynamics of both metastable and spontaneous vortices.Comment: 40 pages, 16 figure
Toward a Theory of Child Well-Being
Assuring the well-being of children has emerged over the past several decades as an important goal for health and social policymakers. Although the concept of child well-being has been operationalized and measured in different ways by different child-serving entities, there are few unifying theories that could undergird and inform these various conceptual and measurement efforts. In this paper, we attempt to construct a theory of child well-being. We first review the social and policy history of the concept of child well-being, and briefly review its measurement based on these conceptualizations. We then examine three types of theories of well-being extant in philosophy - mental states theories, desire-based theories and needs-based theories - and investigate their suitability to serve as prototypes of a theory of child well-being. We develop a constraint that child well-being is important in and of itself and not merely as a way station to future adult well-being (we call this a non-reduction constraint). Using this constraint, we identify the limitations of each of the three sets of theories to serve as a basis for a theory of child well-being. Based on a developmentalist approach, we then articulate a theory of child well-being that contains two conditions. First, a child's stage-appropriate capacities that equip her for successful adulthood, given her environment; and, second, an engagement with the world in child-appropriate ways. We conclude by reviewing seven implications of this theoretical approach for the measurement of child well-being. Validation of a social cohesion theoretical framework: a multiple group SEM strategy
Social cohesion dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. Back then, society experienced epochal transformations, as are also happening nowadays. Whenever there are epochal changes, a social order (cohesion) matter arises. The paper provides a conceptual scheme of social cohesion identifying its constituent dimensions subdivided by three spheres (macro, meso, micro) and two perspectives (objective and subjective). The overarching aim is to test the validity of the operationalization of the social cohesion model provided. Firstly, we conducted an exploratory factor analysis introducing an approach implemented in Mplus named exploratory structural equation modeling that shows several useful characteristics. Afterward, through a structural equation modeling approach, we performed several confirmatory factor analyses adopting a multiple group SEM strategy in order to cross-validate the social cohesion model
Deformation-related volcanism in the Pacific Ocean linked to the Hawaiian-Emperor bend
Ocean islands, seamounts and volcanic ridges are thought to form above mantle plumes. Yet, this mechanism cannot explain many volcanic features on the Pacific Ocean floor and some might instead be caused by cracks in the oceanic crust linked to the reorganization of plate motions. A distinctive bend in the Hawaiian–Emperor volcanic chain has been linked to changes in the direction of motion of the Pacific Plate, movement of the Hawaiian plume, or a combination of both. However, these links are uncertain because there is no independent record that precisely dates tectonic events that affected the Pacific Plate. Here we analyse the geochemical characteristics of lava samples collected from the Musicians Ridges, lines of volcanic seamounts formed close to the Hawaiian–Emperor bend. We find that the geochemical signature of these lavas is unlike typical ocean island basalts and instead resembles mid-ocean ridge basalts. We infer that the seamounts are unrelated to mantle plume activity and instead formed in an extensional setting, due to deformation of the Pacific Plate. 40Ar/39Ar dating reveals that the Musicians Ridges formed during two time windows that bracket the time of formation of the Hawaiian–Emperor bend, 53–52 and 48–47 million years ago. We conclude that the Hawaiian–Emperor bend was formed by plate–mantle reorganization, potentially triggered by a series of subduction events at the Pacific Plate margins
Atrial arrhythmogenicity of KCNJ2 mutations in short QT syndrome: Insights from virtual human atria
Gain-of-function mutations in KCNJ2-encoded Kir2.1 channels underlie variant 3 (SQT3) of the short QT syndrome, which is associated with atrial fibrillation (AF). Using biophysically-detailed human atria computer models, this study investigated the mechanistic link between SQT3 mutations and atrial arrhythmogenesis, and potential ion channel targets for treatment of SQT3. A contemporary model of the human atrial action potential (AP) was modified to recapitulate functional changes in IK1 due to heterozygous and homozygous forms of the D172N and E299V Kir2.1 mutations. Wild-type (WT) and mutant formulations were incorporated into multi-scale homogeneous and heterogeneous tissue models. Effects of mutations on AP duration (APD), conduction velocity (CV), effective refractory period (ERP), tissue excitation threshold and their rate-dependence, as well as the wavelength of re-entry (WL) were quantified. The D172N and E299V Kir2.1 mutations produced distinct effects on IK1 and APD shortening. Both mutations decreased WL for re-entry through a reduction in ERP and CV. Stability of re-entrant excitation waves in 2D and 3D tissue models was mediated by changes to tissue excitability and dispersion of APD in mutation conditions. Combined block of IK1 and IKr was effective in terminating re-entry associated with heterozygous D172N conditions, whereas IKr block alone may be a safer alternative for the E299V mutation. Combined inhibition of IKr and IKur produced a synergistic anti-arrhythmic effect in both forms of SQT3. In conclusion, this study provides mechanistic insights into atrial proarrhythmia with SQT3 Kir2.1 mutations and highlights possible pharmacological strategies for management of SQT3-linked AF
Suppression of Lung Adenocarcinoma Progression by Nkx2-1
Despite the high prevalence and poor outcome of patients with
metastatic lung cancer the mechanisms of tumour progression and
metastasis remain largely uncharacterized. Here we modelled
human lung adenocarcinoma, which frequently harbours activating
point mutations in KRAS and inactivation of the p53 pathway,
using conditional alleles in mice. Lentiviral-mediated somatic
activation of oncogenic Kras and deletion of p53 in the lung epithelial
cells of Kras[superscript LSL-G12D/+];p53[superscript flox/flox] mice initiates lung adenocarcinoma
development4. Although tumours are initiated synchronously
by defined genetic alterations, only a subset becomes malignant,
indicating that disease progression requires additional alterations.
Identification of the lentiviral integration sites allowed us to distinguish
metastatic from non-metastatic tumours and determine the
gene expression alterations that distinguish these tumour types.
Cross-species analysis identified the NK2-related homeobox transcription
factor Nkx2-1 (also called Ttf-1 or Titf1) as a candidate
suppressor of malignant progression. In this mouse model, Nkx2-1
negativity is pathognomonic of high-grade poorly differentiated
tumours. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments in cells derived
from metastatic and non-metastatic tumours demonstrated that
Nkx2-1 controls tumour differentiation and limitsmetastatic potential
in vivo. Interrogation of Nkx2-1-regulated genes, analysis of
tumours at defined developmental stages, and functional complementation
experiments indicate that Nkx2-1 constrains tumours in
part by repressing the embryonically restricted chromatin regulator
Hmga2. Whereas focal amplification of NKX2-1 in a fraction of
human lung adenocarcinomas has focused attention on its oncogenic
function, our data specifically link Nkx2-1 downregulation
to loss of differentiation, enhanced tumour seeding ability and
increased metastatic proclivity. Thus, the oncogenic and suppressive

The perceptions of social responsibility for community resilience to flooding: the impact of past experience, age, gender and ethnicity
Community resilience to flooding depends, to a large extent, on the participation of community members to take more responsibility for enhancing their own resilience. The perception of social responsibility (SR) which is argued to be one of the antecedents influencing individual’s willingness to undertake resilient behaviours can significantly contribute to community resilience through individual and collective actions. Understanding of factors influencing the perceptions of SR of individuals within community might help with developing strategies to increase the perceptions of SR. This research explores perceptions of SR in relation to flooding for householders and local businesses and establishes their relationships with experience of flooding and demographic factors of age, gender and ethnicity. The data were obtained via a questionnaire survey of three communities in Birmingham and one community in South East London, UK, three with experience of flooding and one without. A total of 414 responses were received and used in the multiple regression analysis. The analysis identified ‘experience of flooding’, ‘age’ and ‘South Asian’ ethnic group as significant variables, suggesting that older individuals from South Asian ethnic groups with previous experience of flooding are likely to be more socially responsible than others without these attributes
Home Telehealth Uptake and Continued Use Among Heart Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients: a Systematic Review
Background
Home telehealth has the potential to benefit heart failure (HF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, however large-scale deployment is yet to be achieved.
Purpose
The aim of this review was to assess levels of uptake of home telehealth by patients with HF and COPD and the factors that determine whether patients do or do not accept and continue to use telehealth.
Methods
This research performs a narrative synthesis of the results from included studies.
Results
Thirty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria. Studies that reported rates of refusal and/or withdrawal found that almost one third of patients who were offered telehealth refused and one fifth of participants who did accept later abandoned telehealth. Seven barriers to, and nine facilitators of, home telehealth use were identified.
Conclusions
Research reports need to provide more details regarding telehealth refusal and abandonment, in order to understand the reasons why patients decide not to use telehealth
