Confined compression of collagen hydrogels
Reconstituted collagen hydrogels are often used for in vitro studies of cell-matrix interaction and as scaffolds for tissue engineering. Understanding the mechanical and transport behaviours of collagen hydrogels is therefore extremely important, albeit difficult due to their very high water content (typically > 99.5%). In the present study the mechanical behaviour of collagen hydrogels in confined compression was investigated using biphasic theory (J. Biomech. Eng. 102 (1980) 73), to ascertain whether the technique is sufficiently sensitive to determine differences in the characteristics of hydrogels of between 0.2% and 0.4% collagen. Peak stress, equilibrium stress, aggregate modulus and hydraulic permeability of the hydrogels exhibited sensitivity to collagen content, demonstrating that the technique is clearly able to discriminate between hydrogels with small differences in collagen content and may also be sensitive to factors that affect matrix remodelling. The results also offer additional insight into the deformation-dependent permeability of collagen hydrogels. This study suggests that confined compression, together with biphasic theory, is a suitable technique for assessing the mechanical properties of collagen hydrogels
The SO(N) principal chiral field on a half-line
We investigate the integrability of the SO(N) principal chiral model on a
half-line, and find that mixed Dirichlet/Neumann boundary conditions (as well
as pure Dirichlet or Neumann) lead to infinitely many conserved charges
classically in involution. We use an anomaly-counting method to show that at
least one non-trivial example survives quantization, compare our results with
the proposed reflection matrices, and, based on these, make some preliminary

Towards gravitationally assisted negative refraction of light by vacuum
Propagation of electromagnetic plane waves in some directions in
gravitationally affected vacuum over limited ranges of spacetime can be such
that the phase velocity vector casts a negative projection on the time-averaged
Poynting vector. This conclusion suggests, inter alia, gravitationally assisted

Breathers in the weakly coupled topological discrete sine-Gordon system
Existence of breather (spatially localized, time periodic, oscillatory)
solutions of the topological discrete sine-Gordon (TDSG) system, in the regime
of weak coupling, is proved. The novelty of this result is that, unlike the
systems previously considered in studies of discrete breathers, the TDSG system
does not decouple into independent oscillator units in the weak coupling limit.
The results of a systematic numerical study of these breathers are presented,
including breather initial profiles and a portrait of their domain of existence
in the frequency-coupling parameter space. It is found that the breathers are
uniformly qualitatively different from those found in conventional spatially

New institutionalism (NI) may no longer qualify as being ‘new’, but since re-emphasizing institutions as a central explanatory variable in political analysis over two decades ago, it continues to provide scholars with a useful perspective through which to analyse political dynamics and outcomes that shape everyday life. The renewed focus on institutions has rebalanced the structure/agency scales back toward the former without losing important insights about the role and impact of political actors. NI has allowed for greater understanding about the co-constitutive nature of politics: the various ways in which actors bring about or resist change in institutions; and the way institutions shape the nature of actors’ behaviour through the construction of rules, norms and policies. <br/
An engineering solution for CO2 injection in saline aquifers
In this proposed CO2 injection system, brine is extracted from the target storage aquifer by means of a lateral horizontal completion located near the top of the formation. It should be noted that the brine is not lifted to the surface. An Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP) is used to extract the brine and boost its pressure, before it is mixed with CO2 that is injected down the vertical section of the well. The mixing takes place in the vertical section of the well below the upper lateral. The CO2–brine mix is then injected into the same formation through a lower lateral. A down-hole tool would be used to maximise agitation and contact area between CO2 and brine in the vertical mixing section of the well, which may be tens to hundreds of metres long, depending on the thickness of the formation.The advantages of this method are that there is little overall pressure increase, because CO2 is mixed with brine extracted from the formation, and also the extracted brine is already at high pressure when it is mixed with the CO2, greatly increasing the solubility of CO2 and reducing the volume of brine required. Energy is not expended lifting the brine to surface nor is there any concern about handling large volumes of acidic brine in the surface equipment. In this study, in addition to the concept of the down-hole mixing (DHM) method which is presented, the application of the DHM method in a hypothetical storage site (Lincolnshire—Smith et al., 2012) is also examined. Bayesian stochastic blockmodeling
This chapter provides a self-contained introduction to the use of Bayesian
inference to extract large-scale modular structures from network data, based on
the stochastic blockmodel (SBM), as well as its degree-corrected and
overlapping generalizations. We focus on nonparametric formulations that allow
their inference in a manner that prevents overfitting, and enables model
selection. We discuss aspects of the choice of priors, in particular how to
avoid underfitting via increased Bayesian hierarchies, and we contrast the task
of sampling network partitions from the posterior distribution with finding the
single point estimate that maximizes it, while describing efficient algorithms
to perform either one. We also show how inferring the SBM can be used to
predict missing and spurious links, and shed light on the fundamental

Extended Standard Map with Spatio-Temporal Asymmetry
We analyze the transport properties of a set of symmetry-breaking extensions
%, both spatial and temporal, of the Chirikov--Taylor Map. The spatial and
temporal asymmetries result in the loss of periodicity in momentum direction in
the phase space dynamics, enabling the asymmetric diffusion which is the origin
of the unidirectional motion. The simplicity of the model makes the calculation
of the global dynamical properties of the system feasible both in phase space
and in controlling-parameter space. We present the results of numerical
experiments which show the intricate dependence of the asymmetric diffusion to
