Lattice Expansion of (Ga,Mn)As: The Role of Substitutional Mn and of the Compensating Defects
We apply the density-functional technique to determine the lattice constant
of GaAs supercells containing Mn_Ga, Mn_int, and As_Ga impurities, and use a
linear interpolation to describe the dependence of the lattice constant a of
Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs on the concentrations of these impurities. The results of the
supercell calculations confirm that Mn_Ga does not contribute to the lattice
expansion. The increase of a is due to both Mn_int and As_Ga, that are both
created in the as-grown (Ga,Mn)As in proportion to x, and that are most
probably present in a remarkable amount also in the best annealed materials.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, presented at XXXIV Int. School. on the Physics of

Disorder-Induced Effects in III-V Semiconductors with Mn
The substitution of Mn in the III-V diluted magnetic semiconductors leads to
a strong electron scattering on impurities. Besides the features induced in the
valence band by the hybridization with the Mn d-states, also the conduction
band is affected by the absence of the Mn s-states at its edge. Also the high
concentration of compensating donors modifies the band structure. This is shown
on the absorption coefficient epsilon2(omega) of GaP doped with Mn and Se. The
absorption evaluated by ab initio density functional calculations starts with a
smooth tail and does not show the structure typical for III-V materials. We
analyze these features and the role of the donors on model systems using the
tight-binding coherent potential approach.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, presented at XXXI Int. School of Semiconducting

Energy barriers for diffusion on stepped Rh(111) surfaces
Energy barriers for different moves of a single Rh adatom in the vicinity of
steps on Rh(111) surface are studied with molecular statics. Interatomic
interactions are modeled by the semi-empirical many-body
Rosato-Guillope-Legrand potential. We calculate systematically barriers for the
descent at straight steps, steps with the kink and small islands as well as
barriers for diffusion along the step edges. The descent is more probable on
steps with a {111} microfacet and near kinks. Diffusion along a step with a
{100} microfacet is faster than along a step with a {111} microfacet. We also
calculate barriers for diffusion on several surfaces vicinal to Rh(111).Comment: 11 pages including 3 figures and 3 table
Master sintering curve: A practical approach to its construction
The concept of a Master Sintering Curve (MSC) is a strong tool for optimizing the sintering process. However, constructing the MSC from sintering data involves complicated and time-consuming calculations. A practical method for the construction of a MSC is presented in the paper. With the help of a few dilatometric sintering experiments the newly developed software calculates the MSC and finds the optimal activation energy of a given material. The software, which also enables sintering prediction, was verified by sintering tetragonal and cubic zirconia, and alumina of two different particle sizes
The Philippines, the East Asian 'developmental states' and education: a comparative analysis of why the Philippines failed to develop
After WWII, the economic prospects of the Philippines, then the second-largest economy in Asia, were viewed positively, but by the mid-1970s it had become Asia?s developmental puzzle for its failure to sustain economic growth. In contrast during the same period, regional neighbours, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore, achieved previously unknown levels of economic growth and were dubbed the ?East Asian Tigers?. This article analyses the post-war development of the Philippines, focusing on the role that education played, and contrasts it with the East Asian Tigers. It is argued that the Philippines was distinctive in the state?s failure to exercise strong central control, especially of the education system, which was neither harnessed to promote economic development nor national unity. The status quo, which has its origins in a plantation economy, prevailed, and this ensured the country remained an unequal and impoverished democracy
