AbstractThis paper presents the integration of wind energy conversion system (WECS) with photovoltaic (PV) solar farm (SF) which acts as flexible ac transmission system controller-static synchronous compensator during night time, to regulate the point of common coupling voltage and to rectify faults when SF is not producing any active power. The proposed control will enable increased connections of WECS. MATLAB/Simulink based simulation results are presented for validation of the system

Adding value to laboratory medicine: a professional responsibility

Laboratory medicine is a medical specialty at the centre of healthcare. When used optimally laboratory medicine generates knowledge that can facilitate patient safety, improve patient outcomes, shorten patient journeys and lead to more cost-effective healthcare. Optimal use of laboratory medicine relies on dynamic and authoritative leadership outside as well as inside the laboratory. The first responsibility of the head of a clinical laboratory is to ensure the provision of a high quality service across a wide range of parameters culminating in laboratory accreditation against an international standard, such as ISO 15189. From that essential baseline the leadership of laboratory medicine at local, national and international level needs to ‘add value’ to ensure the optimal delivery, use, development and evaluation of the services provided for individuals and for groups of patients. A convenient tool to illustrate added value is use of the mnemonic ‘SCIENCE’. This tool allows added value to be considered in seven domains: standardisation and harmonisation; clinical effectiveness; innovation; evidence-based practice; novel applications; cost-effectiveness; and education of others. The assessment of added value in laboratory medicine may be considered against a framework that comprises three dimensions: operational efficiency; patient management; and patient behaviours. The profession and the patient will benefit from sharing examples of adding value to laboratory medicine

The aim of this work was to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge about the statistics, stimulating curiosity, interest and creativity of the student. The activities were carried out in a public school in the town of Araguaina-TO. In this way he pointed out this research, the importance of the student be able to analyze information, read statistical data, build charts and graphs. In this sense, the National Curricular Parameters (PCN ́s), Brazil (1997), justify the teaching of statistics, orienting to the need of the individual to understand the information conveyed, learn to make decisions and make predictions that influence your personal life and in the community. Thus, the methodology used for this study was a qualitative and quantitative-oriented approach of descriptive and explanatory nature, based on field research carried out in the Centre of White Castle high school, where two workshops were developed; a using ruler and compass and another in the computer lab of the school, using the Excel Software for building worksheets and charts of statistical data searched. It was used also as instruments: questionnaire, testimonials and pictures for collection and documentation of information and facts. The results obtained, it is concluded that the math teachers, still do not have the habit of driving students to the computer lab this school to make statistics activities and/or mathematics, in this interactive space for teaching and learning. So, the students carry out the proposed activities in the workshops, became able to do a spreadsheet, build a graph and interpret statistical data.O objetivo deste trabalho foi de proporcionar aos alunos conhecimentos teóricos e práticos sobre a Estatística, estimulando a curiosidade, o interesse e a criatividade do aluno.

Given that the overarching national (and international) commitment of the post-1994 government has throughout been the normalisation and correcting of past discrimination, it was hypothesised that changes to the STI system would entail reforming it to become an inclusive system by changing the three pillars of the STI system, viz. national objectives, the human resource composition (race and gender equity) and steering/control mechanisms. The primary level of analysis focussed on initiatives (including allocation of resources) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, with cross-references to developments in two other ministries also involved in the STI system, viz. (Higher) Education and Trade and Industry. The analyses showed, firstly, that the core STI missions were changed substantially over time. Secondly, extensive transformation has been brought about on the human resource dimension in terms of both race and gender equity, although the gender distribution remains skewed at management level. Thirdly, the government has introduced a range of new steering mechanisms and significantly tightened its control on both public universities and research institutions. The paper concludes by identifying four imminent challenges confronting the STI system, viz. the distribution of public financial support; finding the balance between advanced postgraduate studies and professional/technical training/skilling of unemployed youth; proving the benefits of STI for improving the lot of the still very large deprived section of the population; and improving the country's international competitiveness
