Rider Haggard and The Imperial Occult: Hermetic Discourse and Romantic Contiguity

This thesis critically examines the literary oeuvre of H. Rider Haggard, placing it in the nineteenth-century occult milieu in which he wrote, and from which he took ideas which remained with him into the first decades of the twentieth century. Building upon earlier trajectories of Haggard studies, notably postcolonialist, psychoanalytic, and feminist platforms, it critiques and nuances them whilst taking a novel approach in elucidating the religio-philosophical and esoteric ideas which are prolific in his work. To do this I employ the over-arching concept of what I have termed the ‘Imperial Occult’, by which British occultism is understood to be an epiphenomenon of the counter-invasion and reverse-missionising of religious ideas on the colonial periphery, namely those from Egypt, India, Tibet and South Africa. Whilst it is a commonplace assumption that occultism is one of many countercultural movements, I argue that in Britain it represented an attempt to revitalise and shore-up metropolitan religiosity in the face of continental biblical historicism, Darwinism, and scientific naturalism in general. More especially, this was in response to the stripping away of supernaturalism by Broad Church Liberal reform, notably in the wake of the influential Broad Church Essays and Reviews. In this context I examine the syncretic processual mechanisms and discursive religious construction which resulted from an attempt to accommodate religions from the colonies to the Empire as Christendom. Therefore, whereas previously much scholarly work has focussed on Haggard as a writer to be understood in the context of the centripetal force of imperial patriarchy, this study focuses on the impact of the colonial periphery upon Victorian and Edwardian culture and society. In the context of theological controversy, I argue that Haggard took a more High Church, Anglo-Catholic stance, even though his Anglicanism was far from orthodox, and that his work attempted to convey ideas of the occult or esoteric in this context. Analysing these ideas, the thesis is divided into three sections representing three broad intellectual currents of the Imperial Occult: Christian Egyptosophy, Romanticism, and Theosophy. Within these currents I examine how Haggard’s literature presents strategic narratives of religious legitimisation, which frequently seek to endorse biblical historicity. These narratives are considered both in the teeth of Anglican controversy and in the context of Empire, and I analyse how Haggard engaged with the doctrinal controversies of the period. In addition, I examine the intertextuality of Haggard’s ‘Romance of Anthropology’, the purpose of his posited alternative fictional biblical stories, and the importance of the imagination as a spiritual noetic organ of transcendental apperception. In this context I discuss the ‘metaphysical novel’ considered as a source of religious truth and occult lore, and as ancillary to scripture, particularly the letters of St Paul. Throughout the thesis, Haggard’s engagement with this ‘occult lore’ is apparent as a pervasive Hermetic discourse of initiatic religion, esoteric/exoteric dichotomy and a secret wisdom tradition. This takes a number of manifest forms including Egyptological, Romantic and Theosophical tropes. As a result the thesis will engage with a rich panoply of esoteric ideas constellated in a Victorian religio mentis which was born of the British Imperium

Waiting Time Strategy for Public Transport Passengers

To overcome future challenges in urban transport, it is crucial that transport models and cost benefit analyses provide a better approximation of real travel costs for public transport trips; however, it is challenging to exemplify public transport’s generalized cost components. This paper focuses on waiting time as one component of generalized costs. Unlike other relevant components, waiting time is partly determined by an individual strategy. The open waiting time is also affected by line punctuality; delays prolong the actual waiting time unless the delay is normal and travelers have adjusted to this situation. It is quite common to use the assumption of random passenger arrivals at bus stops (as in the Norwegian regional transport model, RTM), to represent the total waiting time, both open and hidden. This study presents results from field registrations and surveys, as well as passengers’ actual waiting times and their waiting time strategies. The registrations were completed during morning rush hour in low-frequency services and in residential areas. The results show that passengers plan their arrivals at bus stops, which implies lower waiting times than normally assumed in transport models. The results published here indicate how transport models could be developed to better deal with low-frequency public transport services

In Defense of the Epistemic Imperative

Sample (2015) argues that scientists ought not to believe that their theories are true because they cannot fulfill the epistemic obligation to take the diachronic perspective on their theories. I reply that Sample’s argument imposes an inordinately heavy epistemic obligation on scientists, and that it spells doom not only for scientific theories but also for observational beliefs and philosophical ideas that Samples endorses. I also delineate what I take to be a reasonable epistemic obligation for scientists. In sum, philosophers ought to impose on scientists only an epistemic standard that they are willing to impose on themselves

Percepción de los consumidores turísticos en la prestación de servicios de campamento de los balnearios de Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo.

The present work, which identifies the perception of tourist consumers in the provision of camping services in the resorts of Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo, is constituted in two stages and responds to recommendations of federal guidelines, and the Official Mexican Standard NOM-06-TUR-2009 regarding the quality of tourism, hygiene and safety services. The results of the research instrument applied to tourists indicate that there are compliance factors, on the part of service providers, which have a positive impact on the transmission of guidelines; however, there are regulations on which more emphasis should be placed, mainly to ask tourists for medical or pre-written information from a doctor, if any; information from close relatives to whom to alert in the event of accidents; and to define and determine the area where the camps are located; the foregoing, in order to contribute to the scope of the rule.El presente trabajo, que identifica la percepción de los consumidores turísticos en la prestación de servicios de campamento en los balnearios de Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo, se constituye en dos etapas y responde a recomendaciones de lineamientos federales, estatales y a la Norma Oficial Mexicana NOM-06-TUR-2009 respecto a la calidad de servicios turísticos, de higiene y de seguridad. Los resultados del instrumento de investigación aplicado a los turistas indican que hay factores de cumplimiento, por parte de los prestadores de servicio, que inciden positivamente en la transmisión de lineamientos; no obstante, hay reglamentos en los que se debe poner mayor énfasis, principalmente en solicitar a los turistas información médica o pre escrita por un médico, en su caso; información de parientes cercanos a quien avisar en caso de accidentes y en delimitar y determinar la zona en donde se encuentren establecidos los campamentos; lo anterior, para coadyuvar al alcance de la norm

Pengukuran Neutron Cepat Di Ruang Linac Medis Menggunakan Detektor Jejak Nuklir Cr-39

Akselerator linear medis (linac) merupakan pesawat pemercepat partikel yang digunakan dalam radioterapi. Linac dapat menghasilkan foton sinar-X energi tinggi yang sangat efektif untuk menyembuhkan tumor atau kanker. Akan tetapi linac yang dioperasikan lebih dari 8 MV dapat menghasilkan radiasi tambahan berupa neutron. Neutron tersebut dapat meningkatkan dosis pada pasien selama proses terapi maupun pada pekerja. Pada penelitian ini dilakukan pengukuran neutron untuk mengetahui distribusi dosis dan fluks neutron, khususnya neutron cepat, di ruang linac medis tersebut. Pengukuran neutron dilakukan dengan menggunakan detektor jejak nuklir CR-39, yang dilapisi radiator polietilen dan filter Cu. Detektor dikalibrasi terlebih dahulu menggunakan sumber neutron standar 241Am-Be di laboratorium neutron PTKMR-BATAN dan diperoleh kurva kalibrasi berupa garis lurus linear. Sejumlah detektor kemudian diletakkan pada beberapa titik di ruangan 10 MV linac medis di rumah sakit Siloam Simatupang. Setelah penyinaran, detektor dietsa dengan larutan NaOH 6,25 N pada suhu 70ºC selama 7 jam, kemudian jejak pada detektor dihitung dengan menggunakan mikroskop optik. Hasil pengukuran menunjukkan distribusi dosis dan fluks neutron cepat di ruang linac medis tersebut nilainya bervariasi mulai dari yang terbesar di titik isocenter pada meja pasien, kemudian menurun seiring semakin jauh jaraknya dari isocenter, dan minimum pada ruang kontrol
