The mixed black hole partition function for the STU model
We evaluate the mixed partition function for dyonic BPS black holes using the
recently proposed degeneracy formula for the STU model. The result factorizes
into the OSV mixed partition function times a proportionality factor. The
latter is in agreement with the measure factor that was recently conjectured
for a class of N=2 black holes that contains the STU model.Comment: 14 page
Measuring charge fluctuations in high-energy nuclear collisions
Various measures of charge fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions are
discussed. Advantages of the Phi-measure are demonstrated and its relation to
other fluctuation measures is established. To get the relation, Phi is
expressed through the moments of multiplicity distribution. We study how the
measures act in the case of a `background' model which represents the classical
hadron gas in equilibrium. The model assumes statistical particle production
constrained by charge conservation. It also takes into account both the effect
of incomplete experimental apparatus acceptance and that of tracking
inefficiency. The model is shown to approximately agree with the PHENIX and
preliminary STAR data on the electric charge fluctuations. Finally,

Evolution of Fluctuation in relativistic heavy-ion collisions
We have studied the time evolution of the fluctuations in the net baryon
number for different initial conditions and space time evolution scenarios. We
observe that the fluctuations at the freeze-out depend crucially on the
equation of state (EOS) of the system and for realistic EOS the initial
fluctuation is substantially dissipated at the freeze-out stage. At SPS
energies the fluctuations in net baryon number at the freeze-out stage for
quark gluon plasma and hadronic initial state is close to the Poissonian noise
for ideal as well as for EOS obtained by including heavier hadronic degrees of
freedom. For EOS obtained from the parametrization of lattice QCD results the
fluctuation is larger than Poissonian noise. It is also observed that at RHIC
energies the fluctuations at the freeze-out point deviates from the Poissonian
noise for ideal as well as realistic equation of state, indicating presence of

A Honeycomb Proportional Counter for Photon Multiplicity Measurement in the ALICE Experiment
A honeycomb detector consisting of a matrix of 96 closely packed hexagonal
cells, each working as a proportional counter with a wire readout, was
fabricated and tested at the CERN PS. The cell depth and the radial dimensions
of the cell were small, in the range of 5-10 mm. The appropriate cell design
was arrived at using GARFIELD simulations. Two geometries are described
illustrating the effect of field shaping. The charged particle detection
efficiency and the preshower characteristics have been studied using pion and
electron beams. Average charged particle detection efficiency was found to be
98%, which is almost uniform within the cell volume and also within the array.
The preshower data show that the transverse size of the shower is in close
agreement with the results of simulations for a range of energies and converter

The STAR Photon Multiplicity Detector
Details concerning the design, fabrication and performance of STAR Photon
Multiplicity Detector (PMD) are presented. The PMD will cover the forward
region, within the pseudorapidity range 2.3--3.5, behind the forward time
projection chamber. It will measure the spatial distribution of photons in
order to study collective flow, fluctuation and chiral symmetry restoration.Comment: 15 pages, including 11 figures; to appear in a special NIM volume

Central Pb+Pb Collisions at 158 A GeV/c Studied by Pion-Pion Interferometry
Two-particle correlations have been measured for identified negative pions
from central 158 AGeV Pb+Pb collisions and fitted radii of about 7 fm in all
dimensions have been obtained. A multi-dimensional study of the radii as a
function of kT is presented, including a full correction for the resolution
effects of the apparatus. The cross term Rout-long of the standard fit in the
Longitudinally CoMoving System (LCMS) and the vl parameter of the generalised
Yano-Koonin fit are compatible with 0, suggesting that the source undergoes a
boost invariant expansion. The shapes of the correlation functions in Qinv and
Qspace have been analyzed in detail. They are not Gaussian but better
represented by exponentials. As a consequence, fitting Gaussians to these
correlation functions may produce different radii depending on the acceptance
of the experimental setup used for the measurement.Comment: 13 pages including 10 figure
Measurement of the Bottom contribution to non-photonic electron production in collisions at =200 GeV
The contribution of meson decays to non-photonic electrons, which are
mainly produced by the semi-leptonic decays of heavy flavor mesons, in
collisions at 200 GeV has been measured using azimuthal
correlations between non-photonic electrons and hadrons. The extracted
decay contribution is approximately 50% at a transverse momentum of GeV/. These measurements constrain the nuclear modification factor for
electrons from and meson decays. The result indicates that meson

Measurement of open charm production in +Au collisions at =200 GeV
We present the first comprehensive measurement of and
their charge conjugate states at mid-rapidity in +Au collisions at
=200 GeV using the STAR TPC. The directly measured open charm
multiplicity distribution covers a broad transverse momentum region of
0 GeV/. The measured at mid-rapidity for is
and the measured
and ratios are approximately equal with a magnitude of . The total cross section per
nucleon-nucleon collision extracted from this study is mb. The direct measurement of open charm production is
consistent with STAR single electron data. This cross section is higher than
expectations from PYTHIA and other pQCD calculations. The measured
distribution is harder than the pQCD prediction using the Peterson

Partonic flow and -meson production in Au+Au collisions at = 200 GeV
We present first measurements of the -meson elliptic flow
() and high statistics distributions for different
centralities from = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. In
minimum bias collisions the of the meson is consistent with the
trend observed for mesons. The ratio of the yields of the to those of
the as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with a model
based on the recombination of thermal quarks up to GeV/,
but disagrees at higher momenta. The nuclear modification factor () of
follows the trend observed in the mesons rather than in
baryons, supporting baryon-meson scaling. Since -mesons are
made via coalescence of seemingly thermalized quarks in central Au+Au
collisions, the observations imply hot and dense matter with partonic
