Effects of Degree of Particle Melt and Crystallinity in SLS Nylon-12 Parts
Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) traces for SLS Nylon-12 parts display two
distinct melt peaks, which have been related to the presence of both melted and crystallised
regions, and un-melted particle cores within the part. The relative proportions of each region are
defined by the term ‘Degree of Particle Melt’ (DPM), and have a large effect on the mechanical
properties of a part. This paper demonstrates that the % crystallinity of SLS Nylon-12 parts is
dependent on the DPM. Crucially, research has also shown that the trends for some tensile
properties (notably Tensile Strength and Young’s Modulus) change once full melting is
complete.Mechanical Engineerin
Why are Orlicz spaces useful for Statistical Physics?
We review a new formalism based on Orlicz spaces for the description of large
regular statistical systems. Our presentation includes both classical and
quantum systems. The presented approach has the advantage that statistical
mechanics is much better settled.Comment: 11 pages. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1302.346
On applications of Orlicz Spaces to Statistical Physics
We present a new rigorous approach based on Orlicz spaces for the description
of the statistics of large regular statistical systems, both classical and
quantum. This approach has the advantage that statistical mechanics is much
better settled. In particular, a new kind of renormalization leading to states
having a well defined entropy function is presented.Comment: 20 page
Farming on the Edge in Poland. Options for Improving Farm Incomes for the Main Types of Farms after Joining the EU
The aim of the paper is to examine the financial impacts of introducing the Common Agricultural Policy into the Polish farming sector after the accession to the EU. Aggregated results from farm level modelling using linear programming for 210 farm types representing the variety of Polish farms, and 90% of the agricultural sector are presented. The benefits of the negotiated subsidy arrangements are unequally distributed and only a partial solution to low farm family incomes.EU accession, Polish Agriculture, direct payments, typical farms, farm model., Farm Management,
Local dielectric spectroscopy of near-surface glassy polymer dynamics
A non-contact scanning-probe-microscopy method was used to probe local
near-surface dielectric susceptibility and dielectric relaxation in
poly-vinyl-acetate (PVAc) near the glass transition. Dielectric spectra were
measured from 10-4 Hz to 102 Hz as a function of temperature. The measurements
probed a 20 nm thick layer below the free-surface of a bulk film. A small (4 K)
reduction in glass transition temperature and moderate narrowing of the
distribution of relaxation times was found. In contrast to results for
ultra-thin-films confined on or between metallic electrodes, no reduction in
the dielectric strength was found, inconsistent with the immobilization of
slower modes.Comment: submitte
Spin-torque efficiency enhanced by Rashba spin splitting in three dimensions
We examine a spin torque induced by the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in three
dimensions within the Boltzmann transport theory. We analytically calculate the
spin torque and show how its behavior is related with the spin topology in the
Fermi surfaces by studying the Fermi-energy dependence of the spin torque.
Moreover we discuss the spin-torque efficiency which is the spin torque divided
by the applied electric current in association with the current-induced
magnetization reversal. It is found that high spin-torque efficiency is
achieved when the Fermi energy lies on only the lower band and there exists an
optimal value for the Rashba parameter, where the spin-torque efficiency
becomes maximum.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Ergodic property of Markovian semigroups on standard forms of von Neumann algebras
We give sufficient conditions for ergodicity of the Markovian semigroups
associated to Dirichlet forms on standard forms of von Neumann algebras
constructed by the method proposed in Refs. [Par1,Par2]. We apply our result to
show that the diffusion type Markovian semigroups for quantum spin systems are
ergodic in the region of high temperatures where the uniqueness of the
KMS-state holds.Comment: 25 page
Spectroscopy of Giant Stars in the Pyxis Globular Cluster
The Pyxis globular cluster is a recently discovered globular cluster that
lies in the outer halo (R_{gc} ~ 40 kpc) of the Milky Way. Pyxis lies along one
of the proposed orbital planes of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and it has
been proposed to be a detached LMC globular cluster captured by the Milky Way.
We present the first measurement of the radial velocity of the Pyxis globular
cluster based on spectra of six Pyxis giant stars. The mean heliocentric radial
velocity is ~ 36 km/sec, and the corresponding velocity of Pyxis with respect
to a stationary observer at the position of the Sun is ~ -191 km/sec. This
radial velocity is a large enough fraction of the cluster's expected total
space velocity, assuming that it is bound to the Milky Way, that it allows
strict limits to be placed on the range of permissible transverse velocities
that Pyxis could have in the case that it still shares or nearly shares an
orbital pole with the LMC. We can rule out that Pyxis is on a near circular
orbit if it is Magellanic debris, but we cannot rule out an eccentric orbit
associated with the LMC. We have calculated the range of allowed proper motions
for the Pyxis globular cluster that result in the cluster having an orbital
pole within 15 degrees of the present orbital pole of the LMC and that are
consistent with our measured radial velocity, but verification of the tidal
capture hypothesis must await proper motion measurement from the Space
Interferometry Mission or HST. A spectroscopic metallicity estimate of [Fe/H] =
-1.4 +/- 0.1 is determined for Pyxis from several spectra of its brightest
giant; this is consistent with photometric determinations of the cluster
metallicity from isochrone fitting.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, aaspp4 style, accepted for publication in
