Entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance in the context of upper echelon theory.
Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) is a firm-level phenomenon, which
involves the firm’s prospects to take risks, be proactive, and be innovative.
Most of the research assumes a positive EO-performance relationship
adopting the EO-as-advantage perspective without providing enough
theoretical foundations of the way EO enhances performance. This paper
provides insights into the EO and firm performance relationship looking into
the EO-as-experimentation perspective. Through EO-as-experimentation
perspective, we argue for the importance of looking into the differential
effects of each of the EO dimensions on firm performance in active and
inactive firms. We hypothesized that the effect of each of the proactiveness
and innovativeness dimension of EO on firm performance is positive among
active firms and negative among inactive firms. Whereas risk taking
dimension of EO is negative among active and inactive firms. Based on the
results of firm fixed effect regression some empirical support for the
hypotheses is presented and discussed
Single 3 transition metal atoms on multi-layer graphene systems: electronic configurations, bonding mechanisms and role of the substrate
The electronic configurations of Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu adatoms on graphene and
graphite have been studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and charge
transfer multiplet theory. A delicate interplay between long-range interactions
and local chemical bonding is found to influence the adatom equilibrium
distance and magnetic moment. The results for Fe and Co are consistent with
purely physisorbed species having, however, different 3-shell occupancies on
graphene and graphite ( and , respectively). On the other hand,
for the late 3 metals Ni and Cu a trend towards chemisorption is found,
which strongly quenches the magnetic moment on both substrates.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Patterned silicon substrates: a common platform for room temperature GaN and ZnO polariton lasers
A new platform for fabricating polariton lasers operating at room temperature
is introduced: nitride-based distributed Bragg reflectors epitaxially grown on
patterned silicon substrates. The patterning allows for an enhanced strain
relaxation thereby enabling to stack a large number of crack-free AlN/AlGaN
pairs and achieve cavity quality factors of several thousands with a large
spatial homogeneity. GaN and ZnO active regions are epitaxially grown thereon
and the cavities are completed with top dielectric Bragg reflectors. The two
structures display strong-coupling and polariton lasing at room temperature and
constitute an intermediate step in the way towards integrated polariton
devices
Quantum Fluctuations in the Chirped Pendulum
An anharmonic oscillator when driven with a fast, frequency chirped voltage
pulse can oscillate with either small or large amplitude depending on whether
the drive voltage is below or above a critical value-a well studied classical
phenomenon known as autoresonance. Using a 6 GHz superconducting resonator
embedded with a Josephson tunnel junction, we have studied for the first time
the role of noise in this non-equilibrium system and find that the width of the
threshold for capture into autoresonance decreases as the square root of T, and
saturates below 150 mK due to zero point motion of the oscillator. This unique
scaling results from the non-equilibrium excitation where fluctuations, both
quantum and classical, only determine the initial oscillator motion and not its
subsequent dynamics. We have investigated this paradigm in an electrical
circuit but our findings are applicable to all out of equilibrium nonlinear

The EDELWEISS Experiment : Status and Outlook
The EDELWEISS Dark Matter search uses low-temperature Ge detectors with heat
and ionisation read- out to identify nuclear recoils induced by elastic
collisions with WIMPs from the galactic halo. Results from the operation of 70
g and 320 g Ge detectors in the low-background environment of the Modane

First Results of the EDELWEISS WIMP Search using a 320 g Heat-and-Ionization Ge Detector
The EDELWEISS collaboration has performed a direct search for WIMP dark
matter using a 320 g heat-and-ionization cryogenic Ge detector operated in a
low-background environment in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane. No nuclear
recoils are observed in the fiducial volume in the 30-200 keV energy range
during an effective exposure of 4.53 kg.days. Limits for the cross-section for
the spin-independent interaction of WIMPs and nucleons are set in the framework
of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The central value of the
signal reported by the experiment DAMA is excluded at 90% CL.Comment: 14 pages, Latex, 4 figures. Submitted to Phys. Lett.
Secondary contact and admixture between independently invading populations of the Western corn rootworm, diabrotica virgifera virgifera in Europe
The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is one of the most destructive pests of corn in North America and is currently invading Europe. The two major invasive outbreaks of rootworm in Europe have occurred, in North-West Italy and in Central and South-Eastern Europe. These two outbreaks originated from independent introductions from North America. Secondary contact probably occurred in North Italy between these two outbreaks, in 2008. We used 13 microsatellite markers to conduct a population genetics study, to demonstrate that this geographic contact resulted in a zone of admixture in the Italian region of Veneto. We show that i) genetic variation is greater in the contact zone than in the parental outbreaks; ii) several signs of admixture were detected in some Venetian samples, in a Bayesian analysis of the population structure and in an approximate Bayesian computation analysis of historical scenarios and, finally, iii) allelic frequency clines were observed at microsatellite loci. The contact between the invasive outbreaks in North-West Italy and Central and South-Eastern Europe resulted in a zone of admixture, with particular characteristics. The evolutionary implications of the existence of a zone of admixture in Northern Italy and their possible impact on the invasion success of the western corn rootworm are discussed
