Endogenous fantasy and learning in digital games.
Many people believe that educational games are effective because they motivate children to actively engage in a learning activity as part of playing the game. However, seminal work by Malone (1981), exploring the motivational aspects of digital games, concluded that the educational effectiveness of a digital game depends on the way in which learning content is integrated into the fantasy context of the game. In particular, he claimed that content which is intrinsically related to the fantasy will produce better learning than that which is merely extrinsically related. However, this distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic (or endogenous and exogenous) fantasy is a concept that has developed a confused standing over the following years. This paper will address this confusion by providing a review and critique of the empirical and theoretical foundations of endogenous fantasy, and its relevance to creating educational digital games. Substantial concerns are raised about the empirical basis of this work and a theoretical critique of endogenous fantasy is offered, concluding that endogenous fantasy is a misnomer, in so far as the "integral and continuing relationship" of fantasy cannot be justified as a critical means of improving the effectiveness of educational digital games. Direct Freeform Fabrication of Spatially Heterogeneous Living Cell-Impregnated Implants
The objectives of this work are the development of the processes, materials, and tooling to
directly “3-D print” living, pre-seeded, patient-specific implants of spatially heterogeneous
compositions. The research presented herein attempts to overcome some of the challenges to
scaffolding, such as the difficulty of producing spatially heterogeneous implants that require
varied seeding densities and/or cell-type distributions. In the proposed approach, living implants
are fabricated by the layer-wise deposition of pre-cell-seeded alginate hydrogel. Although
alginate hydrogels have been previously used to mold living implants, the properties of the
alginate formulations used for molding were not suitable for 3-D printing. In addition to changing
the formulation to make the alginate hydrogels “printable,” we developed a robotic hydrogel
deposition system and supporting CAD software to deposit the gel in arbitrary geometries. We
demonstrated this technology’s capabilities by printing alginate gel implants of multiple materials
with various spatial heterogeneities, including, implants with completely embedded material
clusters. The process was determined to be both viable (94±5% n=15) and sterile (less than one
bacterium per 0.9 µL after 8 days of incubation). Additionally, we demonstrated the printing of a
meniscus cartilage-shaped gel generated directly from a CT Scan. The proposed approach may
hold advantages over other tissue printing efforts [5,9]. This technology has the potential to
overcome challenges to scaffolding and could enable the efficient fabrication of spatially
heterogeneous, patient-specific, living implants.Mechanical Engineerin
NASP aeroservothermoelasticity studies
Some illustrative results obtained from work accomplished under the aerothermoelasticity work breakdown structure (WBS) element of the National Aerospace Plane (NASP) Technology Maturation Program (TMP) are presented and discussed. The objectives of the aerothermoelasticity element were to develop analytical methods applicable to aerospace plane type configurations, to conduct analytical studies to identify potential problems, to evaluate potential solutions to problems, and to provide an experimental data base to verify codes and analytical trends. Work accomplished in the three areas of experimental data base, unsteady aerodynamics, and integrated analysis methodology are described. Some of the specific topics discussed are: (1) transonic wind tunnel aeroelastic model tests of cantilever delta wing models, of an all-moveable delta-wing model, and of aileron buzz models; (2) unsteady aerodynamic theory correlation with experiment and theory improvements; and (3) integrated analysis methodology results for thermal effects on vibration, for thermal effects on flutter, and for improving aeroelastic performance by using active controls
A guideline for heavy ion radiation testing for Single Event Upset (SEU)
A guideline for heavy ion radiation testing for single event upset was prepared to assist new experimenters in preparing and directing tests. How to estimate parts vulnerability and select an irradiation facility is described. A broad brush description of JPL equipment is given, certain necessary pre-test procedures are outlined and the roles and testing guidelines for on-site test personnel are indicated. Detailed descriptions of equipment needed to interface with JPL test crew and equipment are not provided, nor does it meet the more generalized and broader requirements of a MIL-STD document. A detailed equipment description is available upon request, and a MIL-STD document is in the early stages of preparation
A serological investigation of caseous lymphadenitis in four flocks of sheep
A double antibody sandwich ELISA developed by ID-DLO, Lelystad to detect Corynebocterium pseudotuberculosis infection was used on 329 sheep from four pedigree Suffolk flocks in which clinical cases of caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) had occurred. At subsequent necropsy, typical CLA lesions were seen in 133 sheep, and the diagnosis was confirmed on culture. Lesions were most commonly seen in lungs (n = 46), parotid lymph nodes (n = 44), prescapular lymph nodes (n = 38) and mediastinal lymph nodes (n = 31). The sensitivity of the ELISA test for detecting culture-positive sheep was 0.88, while the specificity of the test was 0.55. The antibody ELISA detected 87.5 per cent of sheep that had CLA lesions restricted to internal organs only. It was concluded that the ELISA test has a valuable role in detecting sheep with both clinical and subclinical CLA
