Impact of the Caspian Sea Level Fluctuation on Ground Water Regime and Functioning of the Hydro-Reclamation Network on the Caspian Side Zones

An aim of the research is to investigate an impact of the Caspian Sea level fluctuations on the ground water regime and functioning of the hydro-meliorative network on the Caspian side zone, including Mugan- Salyan region. On the basis of the long-term data of Baku meteorological station during 1830-2014, the water level changes in the Caspian Sea was analyzed, calculations on ground water level fluctuations on the sea influence zone with the application of the selected calculation method were performed. It was determined that due to the changes in the Caspian Sea level between-28,9 m (minimum) and -26,13 m (maximum) interval, the ground water tables at the 25 km influence coastal zone, changes between 0,5- 1,93 m. These values are less than an accepted for the zone value of hesk=2,2 m. An analysis of the data shows that due to the fluctuations, especially rising of the Caspian sea water level, the normal working regime of the hydro-reclamation network (collector and drainage system, different type of the irrigation canals and rivers) under operation have been disturbed in the side zones, including in Mugan-Salyan massive. Consequently, this creates risks for formation of secondary salinization, water logging and desertification in the Caspian Sea influence zone

Unpacking Determinants of Water Conservation Behaviour and Spatial Heterogeneity in Their Coefficients

Water scarcity issues around the world require a thorough understanding of the factors that influence water consumption and conservation behaviour to address the problems on the demand side. This study investigates the determinants of water conservation behaviour through a comprehensive empirical analysis and explores spatial heterogeneity in their coefficients at a regional unit scale with a specific focus on Italy. Ordinal logistic regression with sequential analysis provides that various socio-demographic, behavioural, and social factors including trust in public institutions have a significant impact on water conservation. Furthermore, the findings of the geographically weighted regression reveal statistically significant spatial variations in the relationship between water saving and its four factors including gender, household size, energy saving, and trust in public institutions. The study concludes that targeted interventions tailored to specific regions are essential for effective water-saving interventions which have important implications for policymakers in promoting this type of conservation behaviour

Pro-environmental Consumption: Effects on Subjective Well-Being as a Proxy For Utility

    Get PDF
This paper examines the association between pro-environmental consumption and subjective well-being and tests whether this type of decision could be explained as a utility-maximizing choice under welfare economics, or it is subject to systematic deviations using three waves (2014, 2019, 2020) of the Aspects of Daily Life dataset, an annual multipurpose sample survey from Italy. Pertinent literature provides evidence for positive and significant effects for various pro-environmental consumption ranges; however, studies describing this relationship and drawing comparisons based on specific dimensions are limited. Apart from evaluating this relationship following the techniques and models introduced in previous literature, two composite indicators, representing preferences for pro-environmental behaviour in different dimensions, are constructed based on the apropos PEC variables. One indicator, labelled as “pro-active behaviour,” encompasses the consumption of products with better environmental efficiency, while the other, labelled as “avoidance behaviour,” pertains to sustainable choices that involve avoiding or less frequently engaging in consumption decisions with negative ecological externalities. The findings provide that the former has a stronger effect on subjective well-being compared to the latter

Fabric softness is a complex tactile sensation perceived by the user even before the fabrics are worn. Softness is usually the property of surface perceived by touching or pressing a finger on the fabric surface. Fabric friction properties significantly affect the tactile sensation of the garments. The yarn used, the finishing works, and the fabric structure (weaving, knitting, etc.) affect the softness. In addition, the hardness of the water used during washing, washing movements, the amount and content of the detergent and softener used also have permanent effects on the fabric softness. Softness can be evaluated by the jury members with proven effectiveness according to the predetermined scale. Our achievement within the scope of the thesis is to eliminate the differences that may occur as a result of the subjective evaluation, which may arise from qualitative observations by basing the degree of softness evaluated qualitatively on numerical data and to obtain clearer and more precise results by adding quantitative features to the evaluation process. The methodology developed for softness assessment is also applied for another textile deterioration parameter, namely pilling, and its results are also reported. - Master of Scienc

Immigrant-native wage gap, gender, and cognitive skills: evidence from PIAAC

    Get PDF
The study investigates the effect of cognitive skills and use of these skills in various contexts on the immigrant-native wage gap in 14 European countries by using the data from Programme of International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). After revealing the significant disparities in cognitive skills between immigrants and native-born respondents we analyze the effect of skills and their use on the wage gap in a multi-level regression model by controlling for individual demographic and occupational characteristics, as well for a set of host-country characteristics, reflecting economic development and social welfare. Gender differences in immigrant-native wage gap and drivers behind it are paid particular attention. Once the skill-related variables are incorporated, the wage gap considerably decreases for both genders although it still remains significant for females. By analysing immigrants with respect to their tenure in the host country, we observe that in the early years of immigration the foreign-born people are significantly disadvantaged in the host country labour markets regardless of their skills. But in later years the use of skills reveals significant association with hourly earnings of immigrants. The wage decompositions show that Spain, Finland, and Estonia are the countries with the highest immigrant-native wage gaps

EDUCATIONAL EQUITY IN FINLAND: THE INFLUENCE OF PRIVATE SCHOOLS ON STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT BASED ON PISA RESULTS

    Get PDF
This study investigates the impact of private schools on students’ academic performance in Finland and conducts an empirical analysis using the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment in mathematics (PISA). Statistical modeling was performed using the ordinary least squares (OLS) method for data covering the period 2006-2022. The results of the study reveal that private schools have a statistically significant negative impact on PISA results. The coefficient of the PRIVATE variable is -0.000434, p-value 0.0264, proving that this effect is significant. The explanatory power of the model (R² = 0.747) indicates that public schools in Finland perform better in terms of academic performance. Finland’s education policy based on the principles of equality and inclusion is considered to be one of the main factors of this success. This study demonstrates the successful results of Finland’s publicly funded education system and emphasizes that it can be an exemplary model for countries seeking to create equal opportunities in education. A broader analysis of socio-economic factors, teacher quality, and international comparisons is recommended for future research
