Theoretical models of gas dynamics and star formation in interacting ring galaxies
A series of one and two dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of a ring wave in interstellar gas disks was completed. These calculations included nonlinear source terms to model the effects of interstellar interactions and star formation, as well as the spatial-temporal gas flow. Toomre's kinematical model was merged with the Arnold, Shandarin, and Zeldovich 'pancake' theory of caustics in galaxy formation. The resulting theory can describe almost all the structure in restricted three-body simulations of single-pass collisions, even with multi-component potentials. Off-center galactic collisions were studied to understand the dynamics involved. Multi-color optical and near-infrared observations of faint tidal features were performed in about two dozen interacting galaxies selected from the Arp atlas. This sample provided evidence for ongoing star formation in tidal structures, and even enhancements of star formation in some cases. The task of assembling the data for gas-rich, late-type galaxies, was undertaken to see if a more coherent picture of the gas distribution would emerge from the more complete data. Analytic solutions of the equations with subsonic flows to balance gas consumption for expulsion form a galactic fountain were also derived
Expression profile of genes involved in hydrogen sulphide liberation by _Saccharomyces cerevisiae_ grown under different nitrogen concentrations
The present work aims to elucidate molecular mechanisms underlying hydrogen sulphide production in _S. cerevisiae_ associated to nitrogen deficiency. To assess, at a genome-wide level, how the yeast strain adapted to the progressive nitrogen depletion and to nitrogen re-feeding, gene expression profiles were evaluated during fermentation at different nitrogen concentrations, using the DNA array technology. The results showed that most MET genes displayed higher expression values at the beginning of both control and N-limiting fermentation, just before the time at which the release of sulphide was observed. MET genes were downregulated when yeast stopped growing which could associate MET gene expression levels with cell growth. The over expression of MET genes after nitrogen addition was confirmed by a new release of H2S during the new set of fermentation experiments. In addition, to confirm gene expression profiles observed from macroarray results, real time RT-PCR was performed on 6 genes using additional sets of biological replicates. These genes were selected based on the assumption that differences in sulphide production observed among strains are due to genetic variations of the expression of genes involved in the Sulphate Reduction Pathway. An integration of expression data of genes involved in sulphur assimilation and sulphur amino acid biosynthesis with hydrogen sulphide production is presented

A theory of hope based upon Gabriel Marcel with implications for the psychiatrist and the minister
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityThe problem of this dissertation is to formulate a theory of hoping, based upon Gabriel Marcel's theoretical analysis of hope, and to indicate what implications this theory of hoping has for the work of the psychiatrist and the minister.
To study hope, or the hoping process, necessarily involves the consideration of: (1) the conditions of hope's occurence; (2) the distinctive indicators of hoping, in contrast to other modes of expectation; and (3) the dynamic consequences of hoping.
Gabriel Marcel's analysis of hope considers these problems, as well as others; and it, therefore, provides a foundation for further study.
The general procedure of the study has been to summarise Marcel's theoretical analysis of hope. Based upon this summary, a descriptive theory of hope was formulated. Implications were then drawn from this theory and related to the work of the psychiatrist and the minister [TRUNCATED
