On Hopf's Lemma and the Strong Maximum Principle
In this paper we consider Hopf's Lemma and the Strong Maximum Principle for
supersolutions to a class of non elliptic equations. In particular we prove a
sufficient condition for the validity of Hopf's Lemma and of the Strong Maximum
Principle and we give a condition which is at once necessary for the validity
of Hopf's Lemma and sufficient for the validity of the Strong Maximum
Principle.Comment: 27 pages,4 figure
Unit cell of graphene on Ru(0001): a 25 x 25 supercell with 1250 carbon atoms
The structure of a single layer of graphene on Ru(0001) has been studied
using surface x-ray diffraction. A surprising superstructure has been
determined, whereby 25 x 25 graphene unit cells lie on 23 x 23 unit cells of
Ru. Each supercell contains 2 x 2 crystallographically inequivalent subcells
caused by corrugation. Strong intensity oscillations in the superstructure rods
demonstrate that the Ru substrate is also significantly corrugated down to
several monolayers, and that the bonding between graphene and Ru is strong and
cannot be caused by van der Waals bonds. Charge transfer from the Ru substrate
to the graphene expands and weakens the C-C bonds, which helps accommodate the
in-plane tensile stress. The elucidation of this superstructure provides
important information in the potential application of graphene as a template
for nanocluster arrays.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, paper submitted to peer reviewed journa

The picture of the Bianchi I model via gauge fixing in Loop Quantum Gravity
The implications of the SU(2) gauge fixing associated with the choice of
invariant triads in Loop Quantum Cosmology are discussed for a Bianchi I model.
In particular, via the analysis of Dirac brackets, it is outlined how the
holonomy-flux algebra coincides with the one of Loop Quantum Gravity if paths
are parallel to fiducial vectors only. This way the quantization procedure for
the Bianchi I model is performed by applying the techniques developed in Loop
Quantum Gravity but restricting the admissible paths. Furthermore, the local
character retained by the reduced variables provides a relic diffeomorphisms
constraint, whose imposition implies homogeneity on a quantum level. The
resulting picture for the fundamental spatial manifold is that of a cubical
knot with attached SU(2) irreducible representations. The discretization of
geometric operators is outlined and a new perspective for the super-Hamiltonian
regularization in Loop Quantum Cosmology is proposed.Comment: 6 page
13CO2 recovery fraction in expired air of septic patients under mechanical ventilation
The continuous intravenous administration of isotopic bicarbonate (NaH13CO2) has been used for the determination of the retention of the 13CO2 fraction or the 13CO2 recovered in expired air. This determination is important for the calculation of substrate oxidation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate, in critically ill patients with sepsis under mechanical ventilation, the 13CO2 recovery fraction in expired air after continuous intravenous infusion of NaH13CO2 (3.8 µmol/kg diluted in 0.9% saline in ddH2O). A prospective study was conducted on 10 patients with septic shock between the second and fifth day of sepsis evolution (APACHE II, 25.9 ± 7.4). Initially, baseline CO2 was collected and indirect calorimetry was also performed. A primer of 5 mL NaH13CO2 was administered followed by continuous infusion of 5 mL/h for 6 h. Six CO2 production (VCO2) measurements (30 min each) were made with a portable metabolic cart connected to a respirator and hourly samples of expired air were obtained using a 750-mL gas collecting bag attached to the outlet of the respirator. 13CO2 enrichment in expired air was determined with a mass spectrometer. The patients presented a mean value of VCO2 of 182 ± 52 mL/min during the steady-state phase. The mean recovery fraction was 0.68 ± 0.06%, which is less than that reported in the literature (0.82 ± 0.03%). This suggests that the 13CO2 recovery fraction in septic patients following enteral feeding is incomplete, indicating retention of 13CO2 in the organism. The severity of septic shock in terms of the prognostic index APACHE II and the sepsis score was not associated with the 13CO2 recovery fraction in expired air.Pró-Reitoria de Pesquisa da Universidade de São Paulo (USP)(FAEPA) Fundação de Amparo ao Ensino, Pesquisa e AssistênciaFAPES
First results of the Kourovka Planet Search: discovery of transiting exoplanet candidates in the first three target fields
We present the first results of our search for transiting exoplanet
candidates as part of the Kourovka Planet Search (KPS) project. The primary
objective of the project is to search for new hot Jupiters which transit their
host stars, mainly in the Galactic plane, in the magnitude range of 11 to
14 mag. Our observations were performed with the telescope of the MASTER
robotic network, installed at the Kourovka astronomical observatory of the Ural
Federal University (Russia), and the Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph,
installed at the private Acton Sky Portal Observatory (USA). As test
observations, we observed three celestial fields of size deg
during the period from 2012 to 2015. As a result, we discovered four transiting
exoplanet candidates among the 39000 stars of the input catalogue. In this
paper, we provide the description of the project and analyse additional
photometric, spectral, and speckle interferometric observations of the
discovered transiting exoplanet candidates. Three of the four transiting
exoplanet candidates are most likely astrophysical false positives, while the
nature of the fourth (most promising) candidate remains to be ascertained.
Also, we propose an alternative observing strategy that could increase the
project's exoplanet haul.Comment: 11 pages, 16 figures; Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of

Characterization of nanometer-sized, mechanically exfoliated graphene on the H-passivated Si(100) surface using scanning tunnelling microscopy
We have developed a method for depositing graphene monolayers and bilayers
with minimum lateral dimensions of 2-10 nm by the mechanical exfoliation of
graphite onto the Si(100)-2x1:H surface. Room temperature, ultra-high vacuum
(UHV) tunnelling spectroscopy measurements of nanometer-sized single-layer
graphene reveal a size dependent energy gap ranging from 0.1-1 eV. Furthermore,
the number of graphene layers can be directly determined from scanning
tunnelling microscopy (STM) topographic contours. This atomistic study provides
an experimental basis for probing the electronic structure of nanometer-sized
graphene which can assist the development of graphene-based nanoelectronics.Comment: Accepted for publication in Nanotechnolog
