Amnestically induced persistence in random walks
We study how the Hurst exponent depends on the fraction of the
total time remembered by non-Markovian random walkers that recall only the
distant past. We find that otherwise nonpersistent random walkers switch to
persistent behavior when inflicted with significant memory loss. Such memory
losses induce the probability density function of the walker's position to
undergo a transition from Gaussian to non-Gaussian. We interpret these findings
of persistence in terms of a breakdown of self-regulation mechanisms and
discuss their possible relevance to some of the burdensome behavioral and

A Simple Perspective on the Mass-Area Relationship in Molecular Clouds
Despite over 30 yr of study, the mass–area relationship within and among clouds is still poorly understood both observationally and theoretically. Modern extinction data sets should have sufficient resolution and dynamic range to characterize this relationship for nearby molecular clouds, although recent papers using extinction data seem to yield different interpretations regarding the nature and universality of this aspect of cloud structure. In this paper we try to unify these various results and interpretations by accounting for the different ways cloud properties are measured and analysed. We interpret the mass–area relationship in terms of the column density distribution function and its possible variation within and among clouds. We quantitatively characterize regional variations in the column density probability distribution function (PDF). We show that structures both within and among clouds possess the same degree of ‘universality’, in that their PDF means do not systematically scale with structure size. Spontaneous symmetry breaking in amnestically induced persistence
We investigate a recently proposed non-Markovian random walk model
characterized by loss of memories of the recent past and amnestically induced
persistence. We report numerical and analytical results showing the complete
phase diagram, consisting of 4 phases, for this system: (i) classical
nonpersistence, (ii) classical persistence (iii) log-periodic nonpersistence
and (iv) log-periodic persistence driven by negative feedback. The first two
phases possess continuous scale invariance symmetry, however log-periodicity
breaks this symmetry. Instead, log-periodic motion satisfies discrete scale
invariance symmetry, with complex rather than real fractal dimensions. We find
for log-periodic persistence evidence not only of statistical but also of

The COMPLETE Survey of Star-Forming Regions: Phase I Data
We present an overview of data available for the Ophiuchus and Perseus
molecular clouds from ``Phase I'' of the COMPLETE Survey of Star-Forming
Regions. This survey provides a range of data complementary to the Spitzer
Legacy Program ``From Molecular Cores to Planet Forming Disks.'' Phase I
includes: Extinction maps derived from 2MASS near-infrared data using the NICER
algorithm; extinction and temperature maps derived from IRAS 60 and 100um
emission; HI maps of atomic gas; 12CO and 13CO maps of molecular gas; and
submillimetre continuum images of emission from dust in dense cores. Not
unexpectedly, the morphology of the regions appears quite different depending
on the column-density tracer which is used, with IRAS tracing mainly warmer
dust and CO being biased by chemical, excitation and optical depth effects.
Histograms of column-density distribution are presented, showing that
extinction as derived from 2MASS/NICER gives the closest match to a log-normal
distribution as is predicted by numerical simulations. All the data presented

Functionality of the paracoccidioides mating α-pheromone-receptor system
Recent evidence suggests that Paracoccidioides species have the potential to undergo sexual reproduction, although no sexual cycle has been identified either in nature or under laboratory conditions. In the present work we detected low expression levels of the heterothallic MAT loci genes MAT1-1 and MAT1-2, the a-pheromone (PBa) gene, and the a- and apheromone receptor (PREB and PREA) genes in yeast and mycelia forms of several Paracoccidioides isolates. None of the genes were expressed in a mating type dependent manner. Stimulation of P. brasiliensis MAT1-2 strains with the synthetic a pheromone peptide failed to elicit transcriptional activation of MAT1-2, PREB or STE12, suggesting that the strains tested are insensitive to a-pheromone. In order to further evaluate the biological functionality of the pair a-pheromone and its receptor, we took advantage of the heterologous expression of these Paracoccidioides genes in the corresponding S. cerevisiae null mutants. We show that S. cerevisiae strains heterologously expressing PREB respond to Pba pheromone either isolated from Paracoccidioides culture supernatants or in its synthetic form, both by shmoo formation and by growth and cell cycle arrests. This allowed us to conclude that Paracoccidioides species secrete an active a-pheromone into the culture medium that is able to activate its cognate receptor. Moreover, expression of PREB or PBa in the corresponding null mutants of S. cerevisiae restored mating in these non-fertile strains. Taken together, our data demonstrate pheromone signaling activation by the Paracoccidioides a-pheromone through its receptor in this yeast model, which provides novel evidence for the existence of a functional mating signaling system in Paracoccidioides.MHJS and JFM were supported by Fundacão para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) grants. Probing the near infrared stellar population of Seyfert galaxies
We employ IRTF SpeX NIR (0.8-2.4 microns) spectra to investigate the stellar
population (SP), active galactic nuclei (AGN) featureless continuum (FC) and
hot dust properties in 9 Sy 1 and 15 Sy 2 galaxies. Both the starlight code and
the hot dust as an additional base element were used for the first time in this
spectral range. We found evidence of correlation among the equivalent widths
(W) Si I 1.59 microns x Mg I 1.58 microns, equally for both kinds of activity.
Part of the W{Na I 2.21 microns} and W {CO 2.3 microns} strengths may be
related to galaxy inclination. Our synthesis shows significant differences
between Sy 1 and Sy 2 galaxies: the hot dust component is required to fit the
K-band spectra of ~90% of the Sy 1 galaxies, and only of ~25% of the Sy 2;
about 50 % of the Sy 2 galaxies require a component contribution >20%,
while this fraction increases to 60% in the Sy 1; also, in about 50 % of the
Sy2, the combined FC and young components contribute with more than 20%, while
this occurs in 90% of the Sy1, suggesting recent star formation in the central
region. The central few hundred parsecs of our galaxy sample contain a
substantial fraction of intermediate-age SPs with a mean metallicity near
solar. Our SP synthesis confirms that the 1.1 micron CN band can be used as a
tracer of intermediate-age SPs. The simultaneous fitting of SP, FC and hot dust
components increased in ~150% the number of AGNs with hot dust detected and the
mass estimated. The NIR emerges as an excellent window to study the stellar
population of Sy 1 galaxies, as opposed to the usually heavily attenuated
optical range. Our approach opens a new way to investigate and quantify the
individual contribution of the three most important NIR continuum components

Search for the rare decays and
A search for the rare decay of a or meson into the final
state is performed, using data collected by the LHCb experiment
in collisions at and TeV, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 3 fb. The observed number of signal candidates is
consistent with a background-only hypothesis. Branching fraction values larger
than for the decay mode are
excluded at 90% confidence level. For the decay
mode, branching fraction values larger than are excluded at
90% confidence level, this is the first branching fraction limit for this
