Re-structure : an exploration of relational engagement through objects & object making

Home is a loaded concept. For each of us it means a vast spectrum of associations, emotions and values. However, there are also a myriad of universal commonalities of what home is in our collective imaginations and experiences despite the increasingly transitory and elusive ideas about what home means for each of us. Whatever or wherever we might call home, our experiences within the walls of what we understand to be home impact and shape us. It is the physical and sociological structure that shapes our lives and the shelter from which we depart to grow into the larger world surrounding it. This body of work is an exploration of the construct of ‘home’ as both material and immaterial structure of relationships and objects. Through various approaches to projects across mediums and forms, I have sought to align my process of making with my own developing definition of home and of the domestic through means of connection, collaboration adn community. At the heart of these is a dependence and value of relationships. In exploring relational structures and objects that mediate them through the process of making, I have deepened my belief that relationships are at the core of who we are and how we choose to design our lives. With this in mind, my aim has been to investigate our relationship to objects, our relationship to the making of objects, and our relationship to others, their narratives and histories. Of the utmost import in driving these themes has been a desire to create objects that arise from personal and meaningful places that go further to become structures of support for the life and development of new narratives

A Leishmania major Response Locus Identified by Interval-specific Congenic Mapping of a T Helper Type 2 Cell Bias-controlling Quantitative Trait Locus

The propensity of naive CD4 T cells to become T helper (Th) type 2 cells correlates with susceptibility to infection by the protozoal parasite Leishmania major. Using genetic linkage analysis, we earlier identified Dice1 as a Th2 cell bias-controlling quantitative trait locus on chromosome 16. Using interval-specific congenic mapping, we now resolve Dice1 into two independent genetic loci, Dice1.1 and Dice1.2, which control Il4 expression from naive Th cells and thereby indirectly control Th2 cell bias. Interestingly, only one of the two congenic intervals containing Dice1.1 and Dice1.2, respectively, also contained an L. major response locus, indicating that L. major responsiveness can be insensitive to determinants that influence Th2 cell bias by controlling naive T cell Il4 expression. These results lay the groundwork for identifying the Dice1.1 and Dice1.2 genes controlling naive T cell Il4 expression and L. major responses, and for testing whether these control other Th2 cell–dependent processes such as worm expulsion, allergic asthma, and dermatitis

Bidirectional pressure: a mini review of ventilator-lung-kidney interactions

Acute kidney injury and respiratory failure that requires mechanical ventilation are both common complications of critical illnesses. Failure of either of these organ systems also increases the risk of failure to the other. As a result, there is a high incidence of patients with concomitant acute kidney injury and the need for mechanical ventilation, which has a devasting impact on intensive care unit outcomes, including mortality. Despite decades of research into the mechanisms of ventilator-lung-kidney interactions, several gaps in knowledge remain and current treatment strategies are primarily supportive. In this review, we outline our current understanding of the mechanisms of acute kidney injury due to mechanical ventilation including a discussion of; 1) The impact of mechanical ventilation on renal perfusion, 2) activation of neurohormonal pathways by positive pressure ventilation, and 3) the role of inflammatory mediators released during ventilator induced lung injury. We also provide a review of the mechanisms by which acute kidney injury increases the risk of respiratory failure. Next, we outline a summary of the current therapeutic approach to preventing lung and kidney injury in the critically ill, including fluid and vasopressor management, ventilator strategies, and treatment of acute kidney injury. Finally, we conclude with a discussion outlining opportunities for novel investigations that may provide a rationale for new treatment approaches
